Do you qualify?
- Amazon states that paid members who have not used their benefits are eligible for a full refund of the current membership period.
- Amazon's terms state that if you cancel at any time other than the first three business days, it refunds the full fee only if you and your account did not make any eligible purchases or take advantage of Prime benefits since the latest membership charge.
- Within three business days of signing up or converting from a free trial, Amazon refunds the full fee but may charge or withhold the value of benefits used in that window.
- The terms state that the Prime membership fee is non-refundable except as expressly set out in them, so there is no general right to a prorated refund on request.
- Anything the account did counts, not just what you did personally. A household member using shared benefits uses the membership.
- If Amazon terminates a membership itself, its terms provide a prorated refund based on the full months remaining, except where the termination relates to conduct it considers a breach, fraud or misuse.
ASK WHOEVER TOOK THE MONEY
How to request a Amazon Prime refund.
Cancel at Prime Central and take the refund
The refund is decided as part of cancelling rather than claimed separately, so this is the main route for an unused membership.
- Stop using Prime immediately: no Prime deliveries, no Prime Video, no Prime-only prices, on any account that shares the membership.
- Go to amazon.com/primecentral and sign in with the account that was charged.
- Work through the cancellation prompts and read what Amazon tells you about a refund before you confirm.
- Confirm the cancellation and keep the confirmation email.
- Amazon states the refund is processed in three to five business days.
Amazon decides the refund against its own record of benefit use, so what matters is whether the account used Prime after the charge, not whether you meant to.
Within three business days of signing up or converting
Amazon's terms carve out a short window with a more generous rule than the ordinary one, and it is the one worth acting on fast.
- Check the date the paid membership started, or the date a free trial converted to paid.
- If that was within the last three business days, cancel now rather than waiting.
- Amazon's terms state it will refund the full membership fee in this window, but may charge you or withhold from the refund the value of Prime benefits used during those three business days.
- Keep the cancellation confirmation, which records the date.
Ask customer service about a charge you dispute
Worth separating from a change of mind. This is for a renewal you say should not have happened, rather than a membership you used and now regret.
- Go to the Amazon Customer Service homepage.
- Select Something else, then "I need help with something else".
- Give the charge date and say plainly why you consider it wrong, for example that the membership had already been cancelled.
- Ask for the decision and any refund in writing.
- A refund here is a request Amazon can decline, not an entitlement.
What happens next?
- Amazon states a refund is processed in three to five business days, back to the original payment method.
- A refunded membership ends, so the benefits stop rather than running out the period.
- A refund on Prime does not touch Prime Video subscriptions or channels, which continue and are charged separately.
- If the decision goes against you, the practical outcome is that you keep Prime until the end of the period already paid for.
WHEN THE ANSWER IS NO
If you are refused.
Amazon refused the refund and I barely used Prime
The rule is not about how much you used, it is about whether anything was used since the last charge. One qualifying order or one stream on any account sharing the membership removes the full refund. Check the order history and the Prime Video activity for the period after the charge date before disputing it.
I was charged for a year I did not want
Act immediately and use nothing. The unused-benefits refund is available on the current membership period, so the sooner you cancel after the renewal the likelier it is that nothing has been used. If the renewal was within three business days, the terms give you the separate full-fee window.
I cancelled but the refund never arrived
Check first whether one was actually granted: cancelling and being refunded are different outcomes, and Amazon may simply have ended the membership at the period end. If a refund was confirmed, Amazon states three to five business days for processing, and a card statement can take longer to show it.
A family member used Prime after I cancelled
That is the common way a refund is lost. Benefits remain usable until the membership actually ends, so anyone sharing them can spend your refund without knowing. Tell them to stop before you cancel, not after.
GOOD TO KNOW
Questions, answered.
Does Amazon refund an unused Prime membership?
Yes. Amazon states that paid members who have not used their benefits are eligible for a full refund of the current membership period, processed in three to five business days.
Will I get a partial refund if I used Prime a little?
Amazon's stated rule is not proportional: the full refund applies only if no eligible purchases were made and no benefits taken since the latest charge. Its terms also state the fee is non-refundable except as expressly set out, so a prorated refund is not something the terms promise.
How long do I have to cancel a Prime free trial for a full refund?
Amazon's terms give a full refund of the membership fee if you cancel within three business days of signing up or converting from a free trial, though it may withhold the value of benefits used during those three business days.
How long does an Amazon Prime refund take?
Amazon states it processes the refund in three to five business days, to the original payment method.
