In this guide
Before you start.
- Find your two billing dates first: the monthly billing date and the annual fee date. Planet Fitness states you can find your billing dates by logging in to your member portal at planetfitness.com or on your membership agreement.
- Work back 8 days from each date. Planet Fitness states the club must receive your request at least 8 days before your next billing date to stop that payment, as it may take up to 7 days for billing changes to take effect, and at least 8 days before the annual fee date to stop the annual fee.
- Check whether your membership has a minimum term. Planet Fitness states that if a membership with a minimum term is ended before the end of the contract term, a $58 buyout fee is required.
- Know which club is your home club. The mail and in-person routes both go to the home club, the club that holds your membership, and Planet Fitness points membership and billing questions there first.
- Allow for local differences. Planet Fitness states that some policies and procedures may vary by location based on state and local guidelines, so your membership agreement and your home club have the final word.
- Decide what proof you will keep: a screenshot of the online confirmation, a dated copy from the club, or a copy of your letter with a mailing receipt that shows when it arrived.
How to find all your subscriptions How to cancel a membership
FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE
Cancel Planet Fitness, step by step.
Cancel online
Planet Fitness lists logging in to your account through the member portal on its website as one of the ways to end a membership. It is the fastest route and leaves you with an on-screen record.
- Go to planetfitness.com and log in to the member portal. Planet Fitness states the same email and password work for the PF App and the member website.
- Open your membership and check your next billing date and annual fee date before you continue.
- Use the option in your account to end your membership and follow the prompts to the end. Planet Fitness does not publish the exact button labels, so read each screen before confirming.
- Save or screenshot the confirmation, including the date.
- Check the member portal again after your next billing date to confirm no new payment was taken.
Planet Fitness notes that policies vary by location under state and local guidelines. If the portal shows no way to end your membership, use the club or mail route and ask your home club why.
Cancel at your club
Planet Fitness lists visiting your home club in person as a way to end a membership. The staff can see your agreement and billing dates, which makes it the route for any question the portal does not answer.
- Find your home club on planetfitness.com and go during staffed hours.
- Ask at the front desk to end your membership.
- Ask for your next billing date and your annual fee date, and whether your request is in time for both under the 8-day rule.
- If you are on a minimum term, ask whether the $58 buyout fee applies to you.
- Ask for a dated confirmation or copy of what you sign, and write down the name of the person who helped you.
Planet Fitness states that downgrading a membership, for example from PF Black Card, is also done at the club. Make sure what you sign ends the membership rather than changing its tier.
Cancel by mail
Planet Fitness lists sending written notification by mail to your home club, requesting to end your membership, as one of its cancellation methods. It suits members who have moved away or want a paper trail that does not depend on a conversation at the desk.
- Look up your home club's mailing address on its club page at planetfitness.com.
- Write a short letter yourself, for example: "Please end my Planet Fitness membership. Name: [full name]. Address on the account: [address]. PF Club Pass or membership number: [number]. Please confirm the cancellation and my final billing date in writing." Sign and date it.
- Send it by a method that gives you proof of delivery, such as certified mail with a return receipt, because the 8-day notice period runs from when the club receives the letter.
- Keep a copy of the letter and the mailing receipt.
- Watch your bank statement after your next billing date, and if a payment appears after the notice period has run, take the delivery proof to the club.
Post takes time, and Planet Fitness counts the 8 days from when the club receives your request. Send the letter well ahead of both your billing date and your annual fee date.
What happens next?
- Check your member portal after the next billing date. Planet Fitness states billing changes can take up to 7 days to take effect, which is why its notice period is 8 days.
- The annual fee runs on its own date. Planet Fitness states your request must reach the club at least 8 days before the annual fee date to stop it, so a cancellation made in time for the monthly payment can still be late for the annual fee.
- A membership with a minimum term ended early carries the $58 buyout fee Planet Fitness lists.
- Deleting the PF App does nothing to your membership. Planet Fitness lists the member portal, your home club and a mailed letter as the ways to end it.
- Keep your proof until at least one billing date has passed without a payment.
Pausing or freezing Planet Fitness.
Can I freeze or pause my Planet Fitness membership?
Planet Fitness's national FAQ does not describe a freeze or pause option. It does say some policies vary by location, so ask your home club whether it offers one and on what terms. Get the answer in writing, and make sure what you agree to is a freeze rather than a cancellation, since only a cancellation ends the billing.
WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK
If you get stuck.
I moved away and cannot get to my home club
You do not need to. Planet Fitness lists two routes that do not involve the club building: log in to the member portal on planetfitness.com, or send written notification by mail to your home club. If you would rather keep the membership at a club near your new home, Planet Fitness states you can transfer online if you are not a minor, have been a member for at least 90 days, have not transferred in the past 90 days, owe nothing at your current club and pay monthly rather than Paid in Full.
I cancelled and one more monthly payment came out
Check the date the club received your request. Planet Fitness states the club must receive notice at least 8 days before your next billing date to stop that payment, because billing changes may take up to 7 days to take effect. A request that arrived inside that window lets one more payment through. If yours arrived earlier, take your dated proof to the home club.
I cancelled and was still charged the annual fee
The annual fee has its own date and its own deadline. Planet Fitness states your request must be received by the club at least 8 days before the annual fee date to stop it. If your request reached the club before that and the fee was still charged, take the dated proof of cancellation to your home club and ask them to review it.
My account says draft pending
Planet Fitness states this message means a recurring payment is already processing. That payment is already in progress, so a cancellation made now is likely to be too late for it under the 8-day rule. Cancel anyway so the following payment stops, and keep the confirmation.
A website gave me a Planet Fitness phone number to cancel
Be careful with cancellation numbers found on other websites. Planet Fitness's own FAQ points membership and billing questions to your home club, and to its member services department when the home club is closed. Find your club through the club locator on planetfitness.com, and cancel through the member portal, the club or a mailed letter.
Can I stop the payments by blocking them at my bank instead?
Blocking a payment stops money moving, but it is not one of the ways Planet Fitness lists to end a membership: those are the member portal, your home club and a mailed letter. The membership and anything owed under it can carry on. Cancel properly first, and treat a payment block only as a backstop once you hold dated proof that you cancelled.

GOOD TO KNOW
Questions, answered.
Can I cancel my Planet Fitness membership online?
Yes. Planet Fitness lists logging in to your account online through the member portal on its website as one of the ways to end a membership, alongside visiting your home club and writing to it. It also notes that some policies vary by location under state and local guidelines.
Can I cancel my Planet Fitness membership in the app?
Planet Fitness's FAQ does not list the PF App as a way to end a membership. It lists the member portal on the website, your home club and a mailed letter. The app and the member website use the same email and password, so you can sign in to the portal with the login you already have.
How much notice do I need to give Planet Fitness?
Planet Fitness states the club must receive your request at least 8 days before your next billing date to stop that payment, and at least 8 days before the annual fee date to stop the annual fee. You can find both dates in the member portal or on your membership agreement.
Do I have to cancel at the club I joined at?
The in-person and mail routes both go to your home club, the club that holds your membership. The member portal on planetfitness.com is the route that works from anywhere.
Is there a fee to cancel Planet Fitness?
Only for a membership with a minimum term ended before the contract term is over: Planet Fitness states a $58 buyout fee is required in that case. Separately, the annual fee is still charged if your request reaches the club less than 8 days before the annual fee date.
Can I downgrade from PF Black Card instead of cancelling?
Planet Fitness states that to downgrade your membership you stop by your club, where a team member can help. Upgrades can be done online, but downgrades go through the club.
Can I transfer my membership instead of cancelling after a move?
Often, yes. Planet Fitness states you can transfer online if you are not a minor, have been a member for at least 90 days, have not transferred in the past 90 days, owe nothing at your current club and pay monthly rather than Paid in Full. Otherwise, contact your home club for help with the transfer.
