How to cancel YouTube TV membership.

Google documents this for a web browser. The membership controls sit under your profile rather than inside the viewing interface.

  1. Go to YouTube TV on a web browser.

Cancel a YouTube TV free trial

A trial cancels in the same Membership settings as a paid plan, and Google states that cancelling one does not end access early.

  1. Check the days left: in the YouTube TV app, select your profile photo, then Settings, then Membership. Google states this shows the days remaining before your account converts to a paid membership.
  2. Cancel through Settings, Membership, Manage, Cancel membership, the same as a paid plan.
  3. Keep watching if you want to: Google states you retain access to YouTube TV features until the end of the trial period.
  4. If you cancelled by mistake, Google states you can reactivate the trial on your Membership page and will not be charged until it expires.

Pause your YouTube TV membership

This is the better option for a sports off-season or a few months away, and it is the one most people do not know exists.

  1. Go to YouTube TV on a web browser, or open the app on Android.
  2. Select your profile photo.
  3. Go to Settings, then Membership.
  4. Click Manage.
  5. Use the slider to choose how many weeks you would like to pause your membership.
  6. Click Pause.

Google states you can pause from 4 weeks up to 6 months, that the pause begins after your current billing cycle ends, and that YouTube TV cannot be accessed and nothing new is recorded while paused. When the pause ends you are automatically charged your normal monthly price and that date becomes your new billing date. A pause cannot be extended, but you can resume and pause again.

  • Google states that recorded programs in your library expire 21 days after the end of your payment period, and that library preferences are saved in case you sign up again.

Google states that after the end of your payment period, recorded programs in your library expire after 21 days, and that if you restart your membership you may not have access to previous recordings. If there is something in the library you want, watch it before then, or pause instead, which keeps recordings until the end of the paused state.

I paused my membership and got charged anyway

A pause ends by itself. Google states that when the paused state ends you are automatically charged at your normal monthly price, and that the charge date becomes your new billing date. A paused membership cannot be extended, so a longer break means resuming and pausing again, or cancelling instead.

I was charged during what I thought was a free trial

Google gives two causes. You may not have been eligible, since only first-time subscribers get a free trial. Or what you are seeing is an authorization hold rather than a charge: Google states YouTube TV authorizes your card with a small fee to confirm it is active, and the amount is removed once that is confirmed. Google also states that prepaid credit cards are not supported.

My free trial converted before I cancelled

Google's trial help answers this directly: you can request a refund from the button in that article. Google states that if a refund is granted, you lose access to YouTube TV immediately and your money is returned. Without a refund, cancel now and you keep access to the end of the paid month.
