THE SHORT ANSWER
Start here.
For a directly billed account, go to HBOMax.com/subscription, sign in and choose Cancel Your Subscription, then confirm and note the expiration date. You can keep streaming until the subscription expires at the end of your billing period. If a provider bills you, you must cancel with that provider.

FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE
Cancel HBO Max, step by step.
Billed directly by HBO Max
Use a browser. HBO Max says deleting the app does not cancel the subscription.
- Go to HBOMax.com/subscription and sign in.
- Select Cancel Your Subscription.
- Confirm the cancellation and note the expiration date shown.
- Cancel before your next billing date to avoid a further charge.
HBO Max says an Extra Member Add-On cancels when the base plan expires, and describes prorated refunds for the add-on’s remaining days.
Billed by Roku or Amazon
These are among the most common third-party billers for HBO Max, and each has its own auto-renew switch.
- For Roku, go to my.roku.com/subscriptions and sign in, find HBO Max under Active Subscriptions, choose Manage subscription, then turn off auto-renew and confirm.
- For Amazon, sign in at amazon.com/appstoresubscriptions, find your HBO Max subscription and turn off auto-renewal.
- Keep the confirmation from that company — HBO Max cannot stop a payment it does not collect.
Billed by Apple or Google Play
HBO Max notes that as of 9 March 2026, Apple billing is no longer available for new or returning subscribers, and a new subscription started on an Apple device is billed directly by HBO Max instead.
- For an existing Apple-billed plan, open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, choose your name, then Subscriptions, choose HBO Max and then Cancel Subscription.
- For a Google Play-billed plan, open Subscriptions in Google Play using the account that paid and cancel HBO Max there.
- Check the store’s confirmation and end date.
Billed by a TV, mobile or delivery provider
HBO Max lists many partner billers, including Samsung TV, Xumo, AT&T, Cox, DIRECTV, DoorDash, Hulu, Optimum, Prime Video Channels, Sling TV, Spectrum, Verizon, Xfinity, YouTube TV and YouTube Primetime Channels.
- Use HBO Max’s "who bills me" help page to identify your provider.
- Cancel HBO Max inside that provider’s own account or subscription settings.
- Ask the provider whether the change affects the rest of your package, and keep its confirmation.
Before you cancel.
- Identify the biller first — HBO Max is resold through more partners than almost any other streaming service, and the cancel button only exists where the money is collected.
- Check for an Extra Member Add-On on your plan, which follows the base subscription.
- Note your billing date. HBO Max advises cancelling before the next billing date to avoid another charge.
What happens next?
- You can keep streaming until the subscription expires at the end of the billing period; HBO Max shows that expiration date when you confirm.
- Deleting the HBO Max app does not cancel anything, and the subscription renews automatically until it is actually cancelled.
- Your profiles and watchlist stay with the account. Cancelling is not account deletion.
GOOD TO KNOW
Questions, answered.
How do I find out who bills my HBO Max subscription?
HBO Max publishes a dedicated help page for identifying your biller, and your account page shows the provider. Your bank or card statement description is the other reliable clue — it will name Roku, Amazon, Apple, a TV provider or HBO Max itself.
Can I still watch HBO Max after cancelling?
Yes. HBO Max says you can stream until your subscription expires at the end of your billing period. Note the expiration date shown at confirmation.
Does deleting the HBO Max app cancel my subscription?
No. HBO Max states explicitly that deleting the app does not cancel the subscription, and that it renews automatically until you cancel it.
I cancelled in the app but I am still being charged.
That points to a third-party biller. If Roku, Amazon, Apple, Google or a TV provider collects the payment, cancelling inside HBO Max does not stop it — you have to turn off the subscription in that company’s account settings.
What happens to an Extra Member Add-On?
HBO Max says an Extra Member Add-On cancels when the base plan expires, and describes prorated refunds for the remaining days of the add-on. Check the amounts HBO Max shows you rather than assuming a figure.
