Before you start.
- Find who bills you first. Open HBOMax.com/subscription, or in the app choose your profile and then Subscription, or on a TV device the Settings icon and then Subscription. HBO Max states your biller appears at the top of that screen.
- If there is no cancel option, that is the answer rather than a fault. HBO Max states that when Cancel Your Subscription is missing, your plan is billed by a third party and has to be cancelled with them.
- Only adult profiles can manage subscriptions, so a kids profile will never show the option.
- Deleting the HBO Max app does not cancel anything. HBO Max states the subscription renews until you cancel it.
- Decide whether you want a cheaper plan instead. HBO Max lists Basic with Ads at $10.99 a month or $109.99 a year, Standard at $18.49 or $184.99, and Premium at $22.99 or $229.99. Live Sports is included with Standard and Premium only.
- If you have the Extra Member Add-On, HBO Max states it is cancelled when your base plan expires, and that remaining time on the add-on gets a prorated refund.

Cancel a subscription billed by HBO Max
This is the route for people who signed up at HBOMax.com and pay WarnerMedia directly. It is the only route where the cancel button lives inside HBO Max.
- Go to HBOMax.com/subscription and sign in if prompted.
- Check the biller named at the top of the screen. If it is not WarnerMedia, stop here and use the matching route below.
- Choose Cancel Your Subscription.
- Confirm the cancellation and note the expiration date the screen gives you.
- Check for the confirmation, and keep it.
HBO Max states you can stream until the subscription expires at the end of your billing period. Cancelling before the next billing date is what avoids a further charge.
Cancel HBO Max inside the Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max Bundle
The bundle is one of the most common reasons the HBO Max cancel button is missing. The plan belongs to Disney+ or to Hulu, depending on where you bought it, and neither the HBO Max site nor the HBO Max app can end it.
- Work out which service sold you the bundle. HBO Max directs bundle subscribers to disneyplus.com/account or to hulu.com/account.
- Sign in to that account and open its account or subscription page.
- Cancel the bundle there. Cancelling the bundle ends the HBO Max part of it, so there is nothing further to do inside HBO Max.
- If you only want to drop HBO Max and keep the rest, check whether that service offers a plan change rather than a cancellation, because ending the bundle ends all three.
An HBO Max add-on bought inside Hulu is a different thing from the bundle. HBO Max points add-on subscribers to hulu.com/account and Hulu's Manage add-ons page.
Cancel an HBO Max plan billed by an app store
If the Subscription screen names Amazon, Apple, Google, Roku or Samsung, the store holds the plan and HBO Max cannot end it for you.
- Apple: open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, choose your name, choose Subscriptions, choose HBO Max and then Cancel Subscription.
- Google Play: open the Play Store app, choose your profile icon, choose Payments & subscriptions and then Subscriptions, choose HBO Max and then Cancel subscription.
- Amazon Appstore: go to Amazon.com/appstoresubscriptions, find HBO Max in Your Subscriptions, and turn off auto-renewal.
- Roku: go to my.roku.com/subscriptions, find HBO Max under Active Subscriptions, choose Manage subscription, then turn off auto-renew and confirm.
- Samsung TV: go to samsungcheckout.com, sign in, choose Subscriptions from the Purchase History menu, find HBO Max and choose Unsubscribe.
HBO Max states that if you cannot find the subscription in a store list, you are signed in with the wrong Apple ID or Google account. A Prime Video Channels subscription is not an Amazon Appstore subscription: cancel that one at amazon.com/myac.
Cancel HBO Max billed by a TV, internet or mobile provider
HBO Max is bundled into a long list of provider packages, and some of them include it at no separate charge, which means there is nothing to cancel and no saving to make.
- Identify the provider from the biller line on the HBO Max Subscription screen or from your statement.
- HBO Max names these sign-in destinations: AT&T at att.com/my, Cox at cox.com, DIRECTV at DIRECTV.com, DISH at mydish.com, Optimum at optimum.net/login, Spectrum through its change or cancel services page, U-verse at att.com/myatt, Verizon Fios through My Verizon, Verizon +play at verizon.com/home/myverizon, WOW! at login.wowway.com, Xfinity at my.xfinity.com, and Xumo at xumo.com/subscriptions.
- Sign in there and remove HBO Max from your package or plan.
- For the Verizon Netflix and HBO Max perk, HBO Max directs you to the My Verizon app: choose Account, then Plans, select a line, then Add or remove perks.
HBO Max states that Basic with Ads is included with Cricket Wireless Unlimited plans and with the Spectrum TV Select Signature and TV Select Plus packages. Those are not separate charges, so cancelling them means changing the underlying package.
Cancel HBO Max sold by another streaming or delivery service
A handful of services resell HBO Max inside their own subscription, and those charges never appear on an HBO Max bill.
- Prime Video Channels: sign in at amazon.com/myac and cancel the HBO Max channel there.
- The Roku Channel: sign in at my.roku.com and manage or cancel the subscription.
- Sling TV: sign in at sling.com/my-account and change your subscription services.
- Philo: sign in at philo.com/login/authenticate.
- DoorDash: sign in at doordash.com.
- YouTube TV: sign in at tv.youtube.com and use its add or remove networks flow. YouTube Primetime Channels is separate and lives at youtube.com/paid_memberships.
What happens next?
- Access runs to the end of the billing period you have already paid for. HBO Max states you can stream until the subscription expires.
- Cancelling does not delete your HBO Max account, your profiles or your watchlist. The account stays and can be resubscribed.
- The Extra Member Add-On ends when the base plan expires, and HBO Max states remaining add-on time gets a prorated refund.
- If you were cancelling to save money rather than to stop watching, the Basic with Ads plan is the cheaper option, and switching plans is a different action from cancelling.

There is no Cancel Your Subscription option on my account page
HBO Max states that when the cancel option is missing, the subscription is billed by a third party. Read the biller named at the top of the Subscription screen and go to that company instead. This is the single most common HBO Max cancellation problem, because HBO Max is resold by app stores, cable and mobile providers, Hulu, Disney+, DoorDash, Sling, Philo and Prime Video Channels.
I cancelled HBO Max but I am still being charged
Two charges are easy to confuse. If you cancelled a direct HBO Max plan but the money keeps coming from Apple, Google, Amazon, Roku or a cable provider, you cancelled the wrong one: the surviving charge belongs to the partner and has to be cancelled in their account. Check the merchant name on the statement rather than the amount.
I cancelled the Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max Bundle and lost more than I meant to
The bundle is a single subscription covering three services, so ending it ends all three. If you only wanted to stop HBO Max, the thing to look for in the Disney+ or Hulu account is a plan change that moves you off the bundle, not a cancellation. Check what the replacement plan costs before you switch, because the bundle discount goes with it.
My provider says HBO Max is free with my package
Several packages include HBO Max at no separate charge. HBO Max names Cricket Wireless Unlimited and the Spectrum TV Select Signature and TV Select Plus packages among them. There is no HBO Max charge to cancel in those cases, so cancelling means changing the underlying mobile or TV package, and doing that to save on HBO Max usually saves nothing.
HBO Max will not let me change plans and shows an error
HBO Max states that plan changes require you to be in the country where you started the subscription, so travelling blocks the change until you return. If you are home and it still fails, the plan is billed by a partner who controls the plan options, and Prime Video Channels in particular requires cancelling and resubscribing to change plans at all.

How do I cancel HBO Max?
Go to HBOMax.com/subscription, sign in, and choose Cancel Your Subscription if the page offers it. If it does not, the plan is billed by a partner named at the top of that screen, and you cancel it in that partner's account instead.
Can I cancel HBO Max anytime?
HBO Max states that the subscription renews automatically until you cancel it, and that after cancelling you can stream until it expires at the end of your billing period. For a plan HBO Max bills, it advises cancelling at least 24 hours before your next billing date to avoid further charges. A plan sold by an app store, a TV provider or another partner follows that company's rules instead.
Do I keep HBO Max until the end of the month I paid for?
Yes. HBO Max states you can stream until the subscription expires at the end of your billing period. Cancelling before the next billing date is what stops the following charge.
Does deleting my HBO Max account cancel the subscription?
No. HBO Max states that you need to cancel your subscription before you submit a delete request, and that you can submit one once the subscription has expired. Deleting the HBO Max app does not cancel it either. The delete request starts at HBOMax.com/account-delete and is confirmed by email, and HBO Max states the process usually takes 4 to 5 weeks.
How do I cancel just HBO Max from the Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max Bundle?
You cannot cancel one service out of the bundle. The bundle is one subscription, and cancelling it ends Disney+, Hulu and HBO Max together. To keep the other two, change the plan inside the Disney+ or Hulu account rather than cancelling.
Is there a cheaper HBO Max plan instead of cancelling?
HBO Max lists Basic with Ads at $10.99 a month or $109.99 a year, against $18.49 for Standard and $22.99 for Premium. Basic with Ads streams on 2 devices at 1080p and does not include downloads or Live Sports.
