Do you qualify?
- Costco states it offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee and will cancel and refund membership fees at any time if a member is dissatisfied.
- The refund attaches to the cancellation: Costco's page describes the Primary Member cancelling at a counter and receiving an immediate refund.
- Only the Primary Member can cancel, so only the Primary Member can trigger the refund.
- A membership already renewed automatically has its own route, and Costco states those refunds take approximately 5 to 7 business days.
- Costco states that Executive Members who reverse their Executive status lose all accumulated rewards, and that rewards are not prorated. Refunding the membership is not a way to keep the 2% Reward.
- Costco's published statements cover the membership fee. They do not describe refunds for purchases, which fall under its separate returns policy.
ASK WHOEVER TOOK THE MONEY
How to request a Costco Membership refund.
At the membership counter, with the cancellation
Costco ties the refund to the cancellation rather than treating it as a later claim, and the counter is where its own page promises it immediately.
- Go to any Costco warehouse membership counter as the Primary Member, with identification and the membership cards.
- Say you want to cancel the membership and that you are dissatisfied, which is the condition Costco's guarantee is written around.
- Costco states the Primary Member can cancel here and receive an immediate refund.
- Check how the refund is paid, and whether it covers the Executive upgrade fee as well as the base membership if you hold both.
- Keep the paperwork.
A renewal charge you did not want
Costco publishes a dedicated request for this, separate from cancelling at a counter, for a membership that has already auto renewed.
- Confirm the charge is the annual membership fee rather than a purchase.
- Use Costco's auto renewal refund request, which its Auto Renewal help page links for members whose membership was automatically renewed.
- Alternatively call Member Services on 1-800-774-2678 and ask for the renewal charge to be refunded.
- Costco states these refunds take approximately 5 to 7 business days to process.
Costco also states that if Auto Renewal was removed within 48 hours of the renewal date and the card was charged anyway, it refunds that charge to the card on file within two business days without being asked.
By phone, if you cannot get to a warehouse
The same cancellation route Costco documents, used when the counter is not practical.
- Call Member Services on 1-800-774-2678 and ask for a live agent.
- Say you are the Primary Member, that you want to cancel, and that you are asking for the membership fee back under the satisfaction guarantee.
- Ask how and when the refund will be paid, and whether it goes to the original payment method.
- Get the confirmation in writing.
What happens next?
- Refunding the membership fee ends the membership, so warehouse access goes with it rather than running to the original expiry date.
- Costco states a charge refunded after a late Auto Renewal removal goes back to the card on file within two business days, and that an auto renewal refund request takes approximately 5 to 7 business days.
- Household and additional cards stop working when the primary membership ends.
- Rejoining later is possible, but any Executive rewards accumulated before the refund are not restored, since Costco states they are lost when Executive status is reversed.
WHEN THE ANSWER IS NO
If you are refused.
I was told I would only get part of the fee back
Costco's published guarantee says it will cancel and refund membership fees at any time if a member is dissatisfied, without describing a proration. If you are offered less, ask for the guarantee to be applied and escalate to Member Services on 1-800-774-2678 rather than settling at the counter.
My membership renewed a week ago and I never use it
Use the auto renewal route rather than waiting for the year to end. Costco publishes a refund request for members whose membership was automatically renewed and states it takes approximately 5 to 7 business days to process.
I cancelled Auto Renewal but the charge still appeared
Costco states this is expected if you removed it within 48 hours of the renewal date, and that it systematically refunds the charge to the card on file within two business days. If two business days pass with nothing, call Member Services with the statement line.
I paid to upgrade to Executive part way through the year
Costco states that members who upgrade for a partial year are charged a prorated upgrade fee, so the upgrade and the base membership are separate amounts. Ask explicitly which of the two a refund covers.
GOOD TO KNOW

Can I get a refund without cancelling?
The satisfaction guarantee is written as cancelling and refunding together. The one refund Costco describes separately is for a membership that has already renewed automatically.
