How to get a Google Play refund.

Ask Google directly within 48 hours of the charge, using Report a problem in your Google Play order history. After 48 hours Google sends you to the app's developer, who sets their own refund policy. A decision usually arrives within one day and can take up to four.

Do you qualify?

  • 48 hours is the line. Inside it, Google decides. Outside it, the app's developer decides, and they are not obliged to refund.
  • Unauthorised charges are different: report those within 120 days of the transaction.
  • Cancelling a subscription does not refund the current period. Google's rule is that you keep access for the time you have already paid for, and there is no automatic partial refund for the unused part.
  • A refund is decided per charge. Being refunded once does not entitle you to a refund on the next one.

ASK WHOEVER TOOK THE MONEY

How to request a Play Store refund.

Within 48 hours: ask Google

This is Google's own refund form, and the only route where Google decides. It covers apps, in-app purchases and subscription charges billed through Play.

  1. Open play.google.com and sign in with the Google Account that was charged. If the purchase is not there, you bought it on a different account.
  2. Click your profile picture at the top right, then choose Payments & subscriptions, then Budget & order history.
  3. Find the charge and click Report a problem.
  4. Choose the option that matches your situation, fill in the form, and say that you want a refund.
  5. Submit the form. Google usually answers within one day, and can take up to four.

Google may share what you write in the form with the app's developer.

After 48 hours: ask the developer

Most apps on Play are made by third-party developers rather than Google. Once the 48-hour window has passed, Google directs refund requests to them, and each developer sets its own refund policy within applicable law. Google says contacting the developer directly is often the quickest route in any case.

  1. Open the app's Play Store listing and scroll to the developer contact details.
  2. Email the developer with the order number from your Play order history, the date of the charge, and what you are asking for.
  3. If the developer agrees, they process the refund themselves. Google does not overrule a developer's decision on their own app.

A charge you did not make

Unauthorised charges follow a separate and much longer window than ordinary refund requests.

  1. Report the transaction to Google within 120 days of the charge.
  2. Use the same Report a problem route and choose the option for a purchase you did not make.
  3. Check whether someone else with access to the account or device made the purchase, including family members on family payment settings.

What happens next?

  • Google usually decides within one day, and can take up to four. You are told the outcome either way.
  • An approved refund goes back to the payment method you used. Cards and PayPal take 3 to 5 business days and can take up to 10; Google Play balance takes about 1 business day; online banking takes 1 to 10 business days; prepaid carrier billing can take up to 30 business days, and postpaid carrier billing can take up to two monthly statements.
  • A refund does not cancel the subscription. If you do not want the next charge, cancel it as well.

WHEN THE ANSWER IS NO

If you are refused.

Report a problem does not show a refund option

That usually means more than 48 hours have passed, so Google no longer decides. The request goes to the app's developer instead, using the contact details on the Play Store listing. Keep the order number from your order history.

The purchase is not in my order history

You are most likely signed in to a different Google Account. Check the address on the receipt email from Google Payments and sign in with that one. If the receipt is not from Google, the charge was not billed through Play, and the refund request belongs to whoever sent it.

Google refused the refund

Google does not publish an appeal process for a declined refund, and it does not overrule a developer's decision about their own app. Your remaining routes are the developer directly, and, for a charge you did not authorise, your bank or card issuer.

The refund was approved but the money is not there

Check the timeline for the payment method you used before assuming it failed. Postpaid carrier billing is the slowest: it can take up to two monthly statements to appear, which means the credit may land on the bill after next.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

Can I get a refund on Google Play after 48 hours?

Not from Google. After 48 hours Google directs the request to the app's developer, who decides according to their own policy and applicable law. Some developers refund readily, others do not.

Do I get money back for the rest of my subscription if I cancel?

No. Google's stated rule is that you keep the subscription for the time you have already paid for. If you cancel a yearly plan in July, you keep access until it would have renewed, and you are not charged again.

How long does a Google Play refund take?

The decision usually takes a day and can take four. After that, the money's arrival depends on the payment method: 3 to 5 business days for cards, about a day for Google Play balance, and up to two monthly statements for postpaid carrier billing.

Does a refund cancel my subscription?

No. They are separate requests. A refund returns one charge; cancelling stops the next one. If you want both, do both.
