In this guide
Before you start.
- Work out who billed you, because the plan name tells you. Grammarly states that Grammarly Premium is available through the App Store and Google Play, and that Grammarly Pro is available via web purchase. A Premium subscription bought in a store is cancelled in that store, and a Pro subscription on Grammarly's own pages.
- Grammarly is now part of Superhuman, a suite it describes as including Superhuman Go, Grammarly, Coda and Superhuman Mail. The iOS app's seller is now Superhuman Platform Inc, so the entry in your Apple subscriptions may not say Grammarly.
- That change has a consequence worth knowing. Grammarly states that for a Superhuman user, cancelling through the associated Grammarly account will apply across all other applications in the Superhuman suite.
- Do not expect a refund. Grammarly states that you can cancel at any time but that, as set out in its Terms of Service, refunds are issued only if required by law. It publishes no refund window.
- A genuine billing error is different. Grammarly states that if you have been charged by mistake or there has been an error in billing you should submit a support request detailing the issue, and that if you do not hear back within 24 hours you should check your spam folder.
- Watch the promotional renewal. Grammarly states that promo offers are valid for one subscription period only, that a subscription upgraded at a promotional rate is set to renew at a standard rate, and that promo offers apply to the first seat only with additional seats charged at a standard rate.
- If you are on a trial, Grammarly states it is a seven-day free trial of a paid plan, that you are not charged before it ends, and that a pending transaction during the trial is most likely a temporary verification charge.
- Cancelling the trial is not the same as cancelling a plan. Grammarly states that after cancelling a trial it ends immediately and the account converts to the free version without charges, while it states that cancelling a paid subscription keeps the paid features until the end of the period.
- On a team plan, be clear what you are ending. Grammarly states that cancelling will cancel all future payments and dissolve your Grammarly team at the end of the period you have already paid for.
FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE
Cancel Grammarly, step by step.
Cancel a Grammarly Pro or web subscription
Grammarly bills a web purchase directly, and this is the only route where the whole cancellation happens on Grammarly's own pages. It works from a phone browser too.
- Sign in to your account and click on the Account tab in the left sidebar.
- Click on Your account, then Subscription in the menu that appears next.
- Click Cancel Subscription at the bottom of the page.
- In the window that appears next, click Continue.
- Choose a reason for cancellation and click Cancel Subscription.
Grammarly states that if you are using a mobile device you can cancel at account.grammarly.com. On a team plan, the confirmation step is worded Yes, continue. Grammarly states that cancelling a subscription stops its automatic renewal but that you keep access to all paid features for the duration of the current subscription period.
Cancel on iPhone or iPad
Grammarly states that Premium is available through the App Store, which means Apple bills it. Grammarly directs those cancellations to Apple.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap your name at the top, which is your Apple Account.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Look for Grammarly, and also for Superhuman: the iOS app's seller is now Superhuman Platform Inc, so the entry may carry that name.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm, at least 24 hours before the renewal date.
Watch for the Mobile Only tiers in Apple's list, which are cheaper and restricted to mobile. Grammarly also states that Pro is not available to Premium customers who purchased via the App Store or Google Play, which is why an upgrade path can appear blocked.
Cancel on Android
Google bills a Play purchase, and Grammarly directs the cancellation there rather than handling it itself.
- Open the Google Play Store app.
- Tap your profile icon in the top right.
- Select Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Select Grammarly.
- Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.
Grammarly documents a Play quirk worth knowing: it states that in some cases a purchase is not finalised by the Google Play Store, that it goes unacknowledged for three days after the purchase date, and that the payment is then automatically refunded.
A plan bought through the sales team
Business and Education plans sold by Grammarly's sales team are not cancelled in the self-serve interface.
- Check whether your plan came through a sales conversation rather than a checkout page.
- Grammarly states that if you purchased through its Sales team you should reach out to your Customer Success Manager instead, or contact Support.
- Ask for the effective date and for confirmation in writing.
- If you want to shrink the plan rather than end it, Grammarly describes removing members from the Members page with Remove, then using Update plan on the Subscription page to set the team size and confirm.
- Grammarly states that a plan change takes effect from your next billing cycle and that switching to a different plan is only possible once the current subscription period ends.
What happens next?
- Grammarly states that cancelling a subscription stops its automatic renewal but that you keep access to all paid features for the duration of your current subscription period.
- Your writing is not deleted. Grammarly states, for a cancelled trial, that your data will not be lost and that you will maintain access to all of your documents.
- On a team plan, Grammarly states that cancelling dissolves your Grammarly team at the end of the period already paid for, and that members who have been removed can continue using their existing Grammarly accounts with their stored documents unaffected.
- You drop to the free version, which loses the paid feature set: full-sentence rewrites, tone suggestions, the generative AI prompt allowance, and on Pro the style guides, brand tones, snippets and usage analytics.
- Cancelling a trial behaves differently from cancelling a plan. Grammarly states that after cancelling a trial it ends immediately and the account converts to the free version without any charges.
- Grammarly states that refunds are issued only if required by law, so cancelling stops the next charge rather than returning the last one.
- If you are a Superhuman user, Grammarly states that cancelling through the associated Grammarly account applies across all other applications in the Superhuman suite, so more than Grammarly stops.
Cancelling a Grammarly free trial.
How long is the Grammarly free trial?
Grammarly states it is a seven-day free trial of a paid plan and that you will not be charged before it ends. It also states that free trials of Grammarly Pro are offered periodically rather than always being available, and that cancelling the trial ends it immediately and converts the account to the free version.
WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK
If you get stuck.
Grammarly is billing me after I cancelled
Grammarly's own diagnosis is usually a second account. A subscription belongs to the email address that bought it, and a mistyped or alternative address creates a separate account with its own billing. Search every inbox you use for Grammarly or Superhuman emails to find which address holds it, then sign in with that one. Grammarly also publishes a purchase lookup form for tracing a charge to an account.
The app will not let me reach my account to cancel
The mobile app can gate account access behind keyboard setup, which is a common complaint. Grammarly's own answer is to use the browser: it states that if you are using a mobile device you can cancel your subscription at account.grammarly.com. Open that in a phone browser and use the Account, Your account, Subscription path.
My renewal cost far more than my first year
That is the promotional rate expiring, and Grammarly documents it. It states that promo offers are valid for one subscription period only, that upgrading at a promotional rate sets the subscription to renew at a standard rate, and that promo offers apply to the first seat only with additional seats charged at the standard rate. The 24 hour rule for store subscriptions and the renewal date on the account page are the only warnings you get.
I was charged during my free trial
Grammarly states that if you signed up for a seven-day free trial you will not be charged before the trial ends, and that a pending transaction on your card statement during the trial is most likely a temporary verification charge that should show as Pending. If a real charge has posted after the trial ended, that is the first payment of the subscription, and Grammarly states refunds are issued only if required by law.
I cannot find Grammarly in my Apple subscriptions
Look for Superhuman as well. Grammarly is now part of Superhuman and the iOS app's seller is Superhuman Platform Inc, so the subscription may be listed under that name. Also check whether you are signed in to the Apple ID that paid, and whether the plan was actually a web purchase, which never appears in an Apple list at all.
Still not cancelled?Common reasons a subscription will not cancel How to cancel an app subscription
GOOD TO KNOW
Questions, answered.
How do I cancel my Grammarly subscription?
For a web subscription: sign in, click the Account tab, then Your account and Subscription, then Cancel Subscription, Continue, pick a reason and Cancel Subscription again. For a store purchase, cancel in Apple's or Google's subscription settings. Grammarly states you keep paid features until the end of the current period.
Can I cancel Grammarly anytime?
Yes. Grammarly states you can cancel the automatic renewal of your subscription at any time, and that you keep access to all paid features for the rest of the current subscription period. Cancelling does not bring money back, because Grammarly states refunds are issued only if required by law.
Can I get a refund from Grammarly?
Grammarly states that you can cancel at any time but that refunds are issued only if required by law. The exception it names is a billing error: it states that if you have been charged by mistake you should submit a support request detailing the issue. An App Store purchase is refunded by Apple under Apple's rules.
Does deleting my Grammarly account cancel the subscription?
Do not rely on it. Grammarly's account deletion page sends anyone who only wants to stop future payments to the cancellation steps, asks you to submit a support ticket if you want to delete an account while a paid subscription is still active, and gives self-service deletion steps for free accounts. Deleting removes your personal information and any documents saved in the Grammarly Editor, and cannot be undone. A subscription bought through Apple or Google Play is cancelled in that store.
Why is my Grammarly subscription listed under Superhuman?
Grammarly is now part of Superhuman, which it describes as a suite including Superhuman Go, Grammarly, Coda and Superhuman Mail, and the iOS app's seller is Superhuman Platform Inc. Grammarly also states that for a Superhuman user, cancelling through the associated Grammarly account applies across all the other applications in the suite.
Do I lose my documents when I cancel Grammarly?
No. Grammarly states, for a cancelled trial, that your data will not be lost and that you maintain access to all of your documents. On a team plan it states that removed members keep their existing accounts with their stored documents unaffected.
