In this guide
Before you start.
- Only the workspace owner can do this. Notion states that only workspace owners can view and manage plans and billing. A member can submit a request if the owner enabled "Allow members to request for all upgrades" in Settings, then Requests.
- Downgrade before you delete. Notion states that deleting a workspace does not cancel a subscription, so a deleted workspace on a live plan carries on billing.
- Check who took the payment. Notion sells Plus and Business as in-app purchases in its iOS app, and states that Apple App Store purchases require contacting Apple directly while online purchases go through Notion.
- Note the refund windows before you act. Notion states a monthly refund must be requested within three days of the date your invoice is issued, and an annual refund within 30 days of the date your invoice is issued, from the workspace owner's email or the billing email on file.
- Know the free plan's shape. Notion states the 1,000 block limit applies to workspaces with more than one member, and that a single-person free workspace is unlimited.
- The block limit does not delete anything, but it does lock creation. Notion states you can continue to edit existing content even if your workspace has hit 1,000 blocks, and that you will not be able to create new content.
- The nasty detail: Notion states that deleting blocks, or emptying the trash, will not reduce your block count. You cannot free up capacity by tidying, so a workspace that goes over stays over.
- If you are on a trial you gave a card for, it converts. Notion states that if you entered your payment information to begin your trial, it will auto-renew your Business plan subscription at the end of the trial period.
- Export before deleting a workspace. Notion states that all of the content inside it will be deleted, and the deletion is permanent.
FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE
Cancel Notion, step by step.
Downgrade the plan in Settings
This is the action that stops the charge. On Notion, cancelling means moving to the Free plan rather than closing anything.
- Open Settings and go to Billing.
- Click Change plan.
- Select the plan you want, including Free, and click Continue.
- Give the feedback Notion asks for.
- Click Downgrade to confirm.
- Check for the confirmation, which Notion states shows when your current plan ends.
Notion states that downgrades take effect at the end of your billing cycle, so you keep the paid features until then. Do this before deleting a workspace, not after.
Cancel a subscription bought in the Notion iOS app
Notion genuinely sells Plus and Business as in-app purchases on iOS, which means Apple controls the renewal and Notion's own billing settings will not stop it.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap your name at the top.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Tap Notion, then tap Cancel Subscription.
- Confirm, and keep the Apple confirmation email as your record.
Notion states that Apple App Store purchases require contacting Apple directly for refunds, so its own three day and 30 day refund windows do not apply to an App Store charge.
Reduce the number of members instead
Worth knowing because Notion bills per member and an annual plan charges for a new member's remaining year up front.
- Open Settings, then the people or members area, and review who holds a paid seat.
- Convert people who only need specific pages into guests: Notion states guests are invited to specific pages and do not consume a paid seat.
- Remove members who no longer need access.
- Expect the saving at the next cycle: Notion states changes take effect at the next billing cycle with no mid-cycle proration, and that you keep that seat for a different user for the remainder of the billing period.
- If you added members by accident, act fast: Notion states accidental member charges are refundable within three days if you remove the members first.
Notion states that adding members to a paid workspace is a billable action, charged on add rather than on acceptance. On an annual plan, Notion states a new member generates an invoice covering the remainder of the annual cost for that member, plus retroactive proration.
Delete the workspace, after downgrading
Only once the subscription is already cancelled. Notion is explicit that deletion alone does not stop billing.
- Downgrade the plan first using the steps above, and confirm the subscription has ended.
- Export everything you want to keep: the deletion is permanent.
- Open Settings and under Workspace select General.
- Scroll to the Danger zone.
- Select Delete entire workspace.
- Type the workspace name to confirm.
Notion states that deleting a workspace does not cancel a subscription, and that all of the content inside it will be deleted.
What happens next?
- Paid features run to the end of the cycle. Notion states downgrades take effect at the end of your billing cycle.
- Your pages stay. The free plan limits what you can add rather than removing what exists: Notion states you can continue to edit existing content even if your workspace has hit 1,000 blocks, and that you cannot create new content.
- The 1,000 block limit only applies to a workspace with more than one member. Notion states a single-person free workspace is unlimited, so removing other members can be the fix rather than deleting pages.
- Tidying does not help. Notion states that deleting blocks, or emptying the trash, will not reduce your block count.
- Notion states it automatically offers a three day grace period when your workspace hits 1,000 blocks.
- Teamspaces themselves are free of the limit. Notion states teamspaces are not considered blocks, so they do not count towards block usage.
- Refund windows are short and measured from the invoice. Notion states three days for monthly and 30 days for annual, from the date the invoice is issued, requested from the workspace owner's email or the billing email on file. It states used AI credits are non-refundable.
WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK
If you get stuck.
I deleted my Notion workspace and I am still being billed
Notion states it directly: deleting a workspace does not cancel a subscription. The subscription is a separate object from the workspace, and removing the workspace leaves it running. Go to Settings, then Billing, and downgrade the plan. If the workspace is already gone, contact Notion support from the workspace owner's email or the billing email on file.
There is no billing section in my Notion settings
You are not the workspace owner. Notion states that only workspace owners can view and manage plans and billing. A member cannot cancel, cannot see the invoices and cannot change the plan. The owner can enable "Allow members to request for all upgrades" under Settings, then Requests, which lets you send a request instead.
I cancelled in Notion but Apple is still charging me
Then Apple sold you the subscription. Notion sells Plus and Business as in-app purchases in its iOS app, and states that Apple App Store purchases require contacting Apple directly. Cancel in Settings on your Apple device under your name, Subscriptions, Notion, and request any refund from Apple: Notion's own three day and 30 day windows do not cover an App Store charge.
I downgraded and now I cannot create anything
The workspace is over 1,000 blocks with more than one member. Notion states existing content stays editable and new content is blocked, and crucially that deleting blocks or emptying the trash will not reduce your block count. Two things do work: remove the other members so the workspace becomes single-person, which Notion states is unlimited, or move content into a new workspace.
I added one person to an annual plan and was charged for a whole year
That is the documented annual behaviour. Notion states that on an annual plan, adding a member produces an invoice covering the remainder of the annual cost for that member, plus retroactive proration. If it was a mistake, Notion states accidental member charges are refundable within three days of the invoice if you remove the members first.
My workspace dropped to free without me doing anything
Usually an unpaid invoice. Notion attempts collection automatically, and a paid workspace that drops to the free plan typically follows failed payments. Update the card in Settings, then Billing, and re-upgrade. Check the block count afterwards, because a multi-member workspace that went over 1,000 blocks while unpaid will be locked against new content.
Still not cancelled?Common reasons a subscription will not cancel How to cancel an app subscription
GOOD TO KNOW
Questions, answered.
How do I cancel my Notion subscription?
Open Settings, go to Billing, click Change plan, select the Free plan, click Continue, give feedback and click Downgrade. Notion states the downgrade takes effect at the end of your billing cycle. Do this before deleting the workspace.
Does deleting my Notion workspace cancel the subscription?
No. Notion states that deleting a workspace does not cancel a subscription. Downgrade the plan in Settings, then Billing first, and delete the workspace afterwards if you still want to.
What happens to my pages when I downgrade Notion?
They stay and remain editable. Notion states that a workspace with more than one member is limited to 1,000 blocks on the free plan, that you can continue to edit existing content at that limit, and that you cannot create new content. A single-person free workspace is unlimited.
Can I get a refund from Notion?
Notion states a monthly refund can be requested within three days of the date your invoice is issued, and an annual refund within 30 days, from the workspace owner's email or the billing email on file. It states used AI credits are non-refundable, and that Apple App Store purchases require contacting Apple directly.
Do Notion guests cost money?
No. Notion states guests are invited to specific pages, do not consume a paid seat and are capped per plan, and that temporary members do not use a paid seat either. Converting members to guests is the usual way to bring a per-seat bill down.
