Do you qualify?
- POF's terms open by stating that, generally, all purchases are final and nonrefundable, and that there are no refunds or credits for partly used periods. Treat a refund as the exception.
- The 14 day full refund applies to subscribers residing in the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland. It is not a general right, and the 14 days run from when the subscription starts, not from a later renewal.
- Special terms apply in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island and Wisconsin. In California the stated right is to cancel without penalty or obligation at any time before midnight on the third business day after subscribing.
- POF states that past subscription fees are not refunded after you cancel, so cancelling late does not recover the period already paid for.
- If you subscribed through your Apple ID, POF states that refunds are handled by Apple and not by POF. A Google Play charge is likewise decided by Google, because Google holds the money.
ASK WHOEVER TOOK THE MONEY
How to request a Plenty of Fish refund.
Charged by Google Play, on Android
If the receipt comes from Google, Google holds the money and applies its own refund policy. POF states that only you can edit Google subscriptions, and the same division applies to the refund.
- Open play.google.com and sign in with the Google Account that was charged.
- Click your profile picture, then Payments & subscriptions, then Budget & order history.
- Find the Plenty of Fish charge and click Report a problem.
- Fill in the form, say that you want a refund and give the reason, then submit it.
- Google usually answers within a day, and can take up to four.
Google decides directly for a short window after the charge and passes later requests to the developer. A request made promptly is treated differently from one made weeks later.
Charged by Plenty of Fish, on the website
A membership bought on the POF website is billed by POF rather than by a store, so POF is the party that can return it. This is also the channel the 14-day entitlement is most directly asked of.
- Log in on a desktop computer and confirm the charge and its date under My Membership.
- Cancel the membership first so the next rebill does not arrive while the request is open.
- Contact POF through its help centre about that specific charge.
- Give the date, the amount and the account email, and state where you live and when the subscription began, since the exceptions in POF's terms turn on both.
- Ask for the answer in writing, and keep it.
Cancelling and refunding are separate requests. A cancellation on its own stops future charges and, POF states, does not refund past subscription fees.
What happens next?
- A Google refund returns the money to the original payment method, which is typically a few business days for a card once approved.
- A refund does not cancel the subscription. If the plan is still active it renews again, so cancel it separately.
- An approved refund can end the paid access immediately, which is different from cancelling and running out the period you paid for.
- Keep the written answer either way. A denial that cites a deadline is the document you would need if you escalate to your bank or card issuer.
WHEN THE ANSWER IS NO
If you are refused.
POF told me to ask Google, and Google pointed back at POF
Whoever issued the receipt holds the money, and that is who can return it. If the receipt came from Google Play, Google is correct that it collected the payment, and POF genuinely cannot reverse it. Go back to Google's Report a problem form and submit the request there rather than through POF. Only a purchase made on the POF website is POF's to refund.
I deleted my account and now cannot show them the charge
The bank or card statement line is enough to start with, and the store receipt email is better. Neither depends on the POF account existing. For a Google Play charge the order history at play.google.com still lists it after the app account is gone, and that is where the refund request is made.
I am past 14 days but I never used the subscription
Non-use is not by itself a refund ground, and POF states past subscription fees are not refunded after you cancel. Check whether one of the state or Israel cancellation rights listed above applies to where you live, and check the Google Play route if Google took the payment, because Google applies its own policy rather than POF's.
The charge was made by someone else on my card
That is an unauthorised charge rather than a change of mind, and it is handled differently. Say so explicitly in the store's form, which has a category for it, and the window is usually far longer than the ordinary refund window. Change the account password and remove the payment method as well, or the next renewal arrives while the claim is open.
GOOD TO KNOW
Questions, answered.
Can I get my money back from Plenty of Fish?
Usually not. POF's terms state that purchases are generally final and nonrefundable with no credit for partly used periods. The written exceptions are a 14 day refund for subscribers in the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland, and the special terms in thirteen named US states. Everyone else is asking for a discretionary refund rather than claiming a right.
Does cancelling POF refund the current month?
No. POF states that past subscription fees are not refunded after you cancel. Cancelling stops the rebill and leaves the period you already paid for running to its end.
What is the three business day rule?
It is a cancellation right written into POF's terms for subscribers in certain US states, including California, where the stated right is to cancel without penalty or obligation at any time before midnight on the third business day after subscribing. It is a short window measured from the day you subscribed, not from a renewal.
Who decides, POF or the app store?
Whoever took the payment. POF states that refunds for an Apple ID purchase are handled by Apple rather than POF, and Google applies its own policy to a Play charge. POF's own terms only govern a charge POF collected directly.
