Do you qualify?
- Runway states the refund is at its discretion, and lists three circumstances: a subscription purchased or renewed within the last 30 days that is unused or close to unused as Runway determines, a credit purchase within the past 30 days where the credits have not been used, and signing up for a different plan than intended.
- Usage is the test that decides most requests, not the calendar. Generations you have already run count against you even inside the 30 days.
- Runway states that credits are only automatically returned when a generation ends in a generation error, and that a completed generation consumes its credits even when the output is not what you wanted.
- A store purchase is out of scope: Runway states it is unable to manually initiate a refund for one and does not control the authorisation.
- Runway states the plan is terminated as soon as the refund is initiated, so a refund and continued access are not available together.
ASK WHOEVER TOOK THE MONEY
How to request a Runway refund.
Ask Runway for a web purchase
Runway triages these through its in-app help rather than a billing form, and states that the plan is terminated as soon as a refund is initiated.
- Check the 30 day window and the usage test before writing: Runway looks at whether the subscription is unused or close to unused, in its discretion.
- Open the help icon inside Runway and start a request about the charge.
- Give the payment date, the amount, the plan and the reason, and say plainly whether you want money back or account credit.
- Note that Runway states the plan is terminated as soon as the refund is initiated, so you lose the remaining access with it.
Runway states that credits are only automatically returned when a generation ends in a generation error, and that a generation which completes consumes its credits even if the result does not match your prompt.
You picked yearly when you wanted monthly
Runway treats this as its own category, and the default outcome is account credit rather than a refund. Ask explicitly if you want the money instead.
- Switch to the plan you meant to buy: Runway states the difference is applied as a credit to your account's balance, and future payments deduct from it.
- If you want the money back rather than credit on the account, submit a support ticket and say so, which Runway names as the way to do it.
- Do this promptly, since the same 30 day window governs the refund option.
- Check whether you also want to cancel: a plan switch is not a cancellation.
Runway states that a mid-cycle downgrade behaves the same way, with the unused balance applied as a credit toward your next billing cycle.
Charged by Apple or Google Play
Runway states it cannot manually initiate a refund for a store purchase and has no control over authorisation of one, so the request goes to the store.
- For an App Store charge, go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with the Apple Account that paid, choose "I'd like to", then "Request a refund", pick the reason and the Runway purchase, and submit.
- For a Google Play charge, open play.google.com, click your profile picture, then Payments & subscriptions, then Budget & order history, find the Runway charge and click Report a problem.
- Cancel the subscription in the same store as well, since a refund request does not stop the renewal.
- Check which account paid if the purchase is not listed: Runway states a missing subscription usually means a different Apple ID or Google account.
What happens next?
- Account credit and a refund are different outcomes. Runway states that a plan switch applies the difference as a credit to your balance, which future payments deduct from, and that a refund of that balance needs a support ticket.
- A refund does not cancel a live subscription on its own unless Runway terminates the plan as part of the refund. Check the billing page for an Expires on date.
- Runway states that cancelled transactions stay pending with its payment processor for roughly 24 hours as outstanding, which can delay picking a new plan afterwards.
- Purchased credits are unaffected by a plan refund. Runway states they never expire and stay on the account until spent, though the current plan level decides what they can be spent on.
WHEN THE ANSWER IS NO
If you are refused.
Runway refused because my plan was used
That is the published test rather than a judgement call gone wrong. Runway states the refund applies where the subscription is unused or close to unused, as determined by Runway in its discretion, so any meaningful generation in the period usually ends the claim. Cancelling still stops the next renewal.
I got account credit instead of my money
Runway's documented default for a wrong plan choice is a credit applied to your account balance that future payments draw down. It states that if you would like that credit balance refunded to you instead, you submit a support ticket, so the money is an explicit request.
A generation failed and I want the credits back
Runway states that credits are automatically returned when a generation ends in a generation error. If the generation completed and the result simply was not what you wanted, it states the credits are consumed and cannot be automatically reinstated.
I was charged for a teammate I did not expect to pay for
Runway states that all members added with Admin or Editor roles are subject to an additional charge upon invitation. That is a seat charge rather than a billing error, and reducing seats takes effect at the end of the billing period.
GOOD TO KNOW
Questions, answered.
What is Runway's refund window?
Runway names 30 days for both a subscription purchase or renewal and a credit purchase, with the added condition that the subscription is unused or close to unused, or the credits unused, and it describes the whole policy as at its discretion.
Can I get a refund for unused Runway credits?
Only for a credit purchase within the past 30 days where the credits have not yet been used. Runway also returns credits automatically when a generation ends in a generation error, but not when a generation completes.
I bought annual by mistake, what happens?
Runway names this as a refund circumstance and describes the usual mechanism as a credit to your account balance when you switch to the plan you wanted, with a support ticket needed if you want that balance refunded to you instead.
Will Runway refund an App Store charge?
No. Runway states it is unable to manually initiate a refund for an App Store or Google Play purchase and has no control over authorising one. Apple and Google each run their own request process.
