In this guide
Before you start.
- Know which credits you are about to lose. Runway states that monthly plan credits expire on your billing date on the Standard, Pro and Unlimited plans, that unused credits are forfeited at the end of each cycle, and that if you have cancelled, your balance resets to 0.
- Purchased credits are the exception. Runway states that purchased credits do not expire and that they remain on your account until spent, though your current plan level decides what features they can be spent on, so generations made after downgrading to the Basic tier carry watermarks.
- A workspace can bill separately from you. Runway states that if you are a workspace owner, the workspace may have its own subscription that bills independently from your personal plan.
- Do not delete the account instead of cancelling. Runway states that your Stripe subscription exists independently of your Runway account, and that deleting the account without completing the cancellation steps can leave the billing running.
- An API account is a different balance entirely. Runway states that credits or plans purchased on the web app are completely separate from credits purchased via the API at dev.runwayml.com, and that web app credits never appear in your API credits or the other way round.
FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE
Cancel Runway, step by step.
Cancel a personal plan on the website
This is Runway's documented route, and it ends outside Runway's own interface, in Stripe. Stopping early is the single most common reason a charge still arrives.
- Go to your billing page at app.runwayml.com/settings/billing.
- Click Cancel plan.
- Provide any feedback, then proceed by selecting Continue to cancel plan.
- Click Confirm cancellation in Stripe. The subscription is not cancelled until Stripe returns this confirmation.
- Check the billing page afterwards for the Expires on field, which shows the date access ends.
Runway states that if the Cancel plan button is inactive, the subscription is already scheduled for cancellation at the end of the current cycle, and that the date is shown in the Expires on field. An inactive button is not a fault.
Cancel a workspace or Team subscription
A workspace subscription is separate from a personal plan and lives behind workspace settings. Runway bills the Team plan per seat, so removing people is not the same as reducing the bill.
- Open Workspace Settings, then Plans & Billing, then Manage your Plan.
- Click Downgrade plan under the Free Plan.
- Select Cancel Plan next to the default payment method.
- If you want fewer seats instead of no plan, use Workspace Settings, then Plans & Billing, then Manage seats, reduce the seat count and confirm.
Runway states that removing a member frees their seat for someone else without changing your billing, that removing a member does not remove the seat, and that removing a seat takes effect at the end of the billing period. It also states that members invited as Admin or Editor are subject to an additional charge upon invitation.
Cancel a subscription bought in the iOS app
Runway states that app plans bought for iOS are billed by Apple, so the cancellation belongs in your device settings rather than on the billing page.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap your name (your Apple Account) at the top of the screen.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Select Runway from the list of active subscriptions.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
Runway states that it is unable to manually initiate a refund for a store purchase and has no control over authorisation of one. If Runway is missing from the list, Runway states you may be signed in with a different Apple ID than the one used to buy it.
Cancel a subscription bought in the Android app
Google Play bills an Android in-app purchase, and Runway's own billing page will not show it.
- Open the Google Play Store app.
- Tap your profile icon in the top right.
- Select Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Select Runway.
- Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts to confirm.
Runway states that media you generated in the app stays accessible once the plan ends.
Stop Runway API billing
The developer platform at dev.runwayml.com has its own credit balance. Cancelling the web subscription does not reduce it or stop an integration spending it.
- Sign in to the Runway Developer Portal separately from the web app.
- Open the Manage section, where API keys and billing live.
- Revoke the API keys still used by a script or third-party tool.
- Check the API credit balance, which is counted separately from anything shown in the web app.
Runway states that credits or plans purchased on the web app are completely separate from credits purchased via the API, and that web app credits never appear in your API credits, or the reverse.
What happens next?
- Access runs to the end of the billing period. Runway states that downgrades take effect right away while cancellations wait until the end of the billing period.
- Plan credits go to zero. Runway states that unused credits are forfeited at the end of each cycle except on the Max plan, and that if you have cancelled, your balance resets to 0.
- Purchased credits stay. Runway states that purchased credits will remain on your account until spent and that they never expire, but that your current plan level decides the features available, so generations made on the Basic tier are watermarked.
- Your work stays. Runway states that assets and projects remain on your account unless you delete the account entirely, though you cannot create new projects on the Free plan if you already have more than three.
- Runway states that cancelled transactions stay pending with its payment processor for roughly 24 hours as outstanding, which is why a new plan sometimes cannot be chosen immediately.
WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK
If you get stuck.
I cancelled and was charged anyway
Runway publishes the reason: the cancellation flow has two steps, experience feedback and the cancellation itself, and the subscription is not cancelled until the final step is complete and Stripe returns the confirmation. If you stopped before the Stripe confirmation, the subscription stayed active and renewed as scheduled. Go back to the billing page and check for an Expires on date, which only appears once the cancellation is real.
The Cancel plan button is greyed out
Runway states that an inactive Cancel plan button means the subscription is already scheduled for cancellation at the end of the current billing cycle, with the date shown in the Expires on field. It also notes that being unable to cancel while receiving failed renewal emails usually means the renewal date recently passed.
I removed a teammate and the bill did not drop
That is the documented behaviour. Runway states that removing a member frees their seat for someone else without changing your billing, and that removing a member does not remove the seat. To pay less you have to reduce the seat count under Workspace Settings, then Plans & Billing, then Manage seats, and Runway states that a seat removal takes effect at the end of the billing period.
There seem to be two Runway accounts charging me
Runway names the cause: signing in with Apple's Hide My Email can create a separate Runway account under a masked address, leaving two active accounts each with its own subscription. Check both addresses. A workspace subscription is a second possibility, since Runway states a workspace can bill independently of your personal plan.
I deleted my account and the billing continued
Runway states that your Stripe subscription exists independently of your Runway account, so deleting the account without completing the cancellation steps can leave billing running. The fix is to complete the cancellation itself, through the billing page or with Runway support.
Still not cancelled?Common reasons a subscription will not cancel How to cancel an app subscription
GOOD TO KNOW
Questions, answered.
How do I cancel my Runway subscription?
Go to app.runwayml.com/settings/billing, click Cancel plan, give feedback, select Continue to cancel plan, then Confirm cancellation in Stripe. Runway states the subscription is not cancelled until that Stripe confirmation comes back.
Do I lose my Runway credits when I cancel?
Plan credits, yes. Runway states that unused credits are forfeited at the end of each cycle and that a cancelled account's balance resets to 0. Purchased credits are different: Runway states they do not expire and remain on the account until spent.
Can I get a refund from Runway?
Runway states that at its discretion it may refund a subscription purchased or renewed in the last 30 days that is unused or close to unused, a credit purchase made in the past 30 days where the credits have not been used, or a case where you signed up for a different plan than intended, such as annual instead of monthly.
What happens to my videos and projects?
Runway states that assets and projects remain on your account unless you delete the account entirely, and that media generated in the mobile app stays accessible once the plan ends. On the Free plan you cannot create new projects if you already have more than three.
Does cancelling stop my Runway API charges?
No. Runway states that plans and credits on the web app are completely separate from credits purchased via the API at dev.runwayml.com. Revoke the API keys and check the balance in the Developer Portal under Manage.
