NEWS & READINGSubscription cancellation guide

How to cancel Apple News+ subscription.

Apple bills Apple News+ itself, so the cancellation is in Apple's subscription settings. On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, tap the Apple News+ subscription and tap Cancel Subscription. On a Mac, open the App Store, click your name at the bottom of the sidebar, click Subscriptions, then Cancel Subscription. You can also use account.apple.com in a browser. The case that defeats people is Apple One: Apple states that existing subscriptions included in a bundle automatically become part of your Apple One plan and you are no longer billed separately for them, so there is no Apple News+ line to cancel and you have to change or cancel Apple One.

Before you start.

  • Work out whether you pay for Apple News+ on its own or through Apple One. Apple includes Apple News+ in the Premier plan, and states that any existing subscriptions that are included automatically become part of your Apple One plan and you are no longer billed separately for them.
  • Compare the amount on your statement against the standalone price. Apple states Apple News+ is $12.99 per month after the free month for new subscribers, so a different figure usually means a bundle.
  • Cancel a trial with time in hand. Apple states that if you signed up for a trial subscription and do not want to renew it, you should cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends.
  • For an Apple One bundle, the margin is slightly different. Apple states you can cancel at least a day before your monthly renewal date, and that you will have access until the end of the billing cycle you paid for.
  • If you cannot find the subscription, follow the receipt. Apple suggests searching your email for a receipt from Apple or an invoice from Apple to identify which Apple Account holds it.
  • On Family Sharing, only the owner can act. Apple states you cannot cancel a family member's subscription and that you should ask the family member whose Apple Account appears on the receipt to cancel it.
  • Downloaded issues are part of the subscription rather than purchases, so plan for losing access to magazines you have saved for later.

FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE

Cancel Apple News+, step by step.

Cancel Apple News+ on iPhone or iPad

This is the route most people need, and the same place every Apple-billed subscription lives.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap your name at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Tap the Apple News+ subscription.
  5. Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.

Apple states you might need to scroll down to find the Cancel Subscription button, and that if there is no Cancel button or you see an expiration message in red text, the subscription is already cancelled.

Cancel Apple News+ on a Mac, PC or in a browser

Useful when the subscription was started on a computer, or the iPhone is not to hand.

  1. On a Mac, open the App Store and click your name at the bottom of the sidebar, then click your name on the page that appears.
  2. Click Subscriptions, click the subscription, then click Cancel Subscription.
  3. On Windows, in the Apple Music or Apple TV app, click your name, choose View My Account, go to the Settings section, click Manage next to Subscriptions, click Edit, then Cancel Subscription.
  4. In a browser, sign in at account.apple.com and cancel from the subscriptions section.

The red expiry message means the same thing on every platform: the subscription is already cancelled and will simply run out.

Apple News+ inside an Apple One bundle

This is why Apple News+ is missing from many people's subscription lists. In a bundle it is not sold separately, so there is nothing individual to cancel.

  1. Open Settings, tap your name, then tap Subscriptions.
  2. Look for the Apple One entry rather than an Apple News+ one.
  3. To stop paying for news only, change the Apple One plan to one that does not include Apple News+, since Apple includes it in the Premier plan.
  4. To stop the whole bundle, cancel Apple One, which ends every service it covers.
  5. Check what else the bundle carries before cancelling it, particularly iCloud storage, because losing that can leave you over your free limit.

Apple describes Apple One as a monthly subscription with no long-term commitment, and states you can cancel in Settings at least a day before your monthly renewal date, keeping access until the end of the billing cycle you paid for.

What happens next?

  • Access continues to the end of the period you have already paid for. Apple shows the expiry date on the subscription entry itself.
  • Magazines and articles you downloaded through Apple News+ stop being available when the subscription ends, because they are part of the subscription rather than purchases.
  • The free Apple News app remains, so you keep the ordinary news feed without the Apple News+ publications.
  • Cancelling Apple News+ does not affect anything else Apple bills you for. Apple Music, iCloud storage, Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade are separate lines on the same list.
  • Cancelling Apple One ends every service in the bundle at once, not just the one you wanted to stop.

How do I cancel an App Store free trial before I’m charged?

For a trial billed by Apple, open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Select the trial, choose the cancellation option and confirm. Apple advises cancelling at least 24 hours before the trial ends to prevent renewal. Check the confirmation for your access end date. If you track it in Subex, enter the date the trial converts as the renewal date and set a reminder 1 or 3 days before.

WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK

If you get stuck.

Apple News+ is not in my Subscriptions list

The most common reason is Apple One. Apple states that existing subscriptions included in the bundle automatically become part of your Apple One plan and you are no longer billed separately for them, so only Apple One appears. The other reasons are that a different Apple Account holds it, or a family member does: Apple states you cannot cancel a family member's subscription and that the person whose Apple Account is on the receipt has to cancel it.

There is no Cancel Subscription button

Apple gives the answer directly: you might need to scroll down to find it, and if there is no Cancel button or you see an expiration message in red text, the subscription is already cancelled. In that case nothing more is needed, and it will end on the date shown.

I cancelled Apple One but wanted to keep Apple Music

Cancelling the bundle ends everything in it. If you want to keep one service, resubscribe to it individually rather than cancelling and hoping it survives, and check the price, because the standalone rate is not the bundle share. Changing the Apple One plan rather than cancelling it is the other option where a lower tier still covers what you want.

I cannot work out which Apple Account is being charged

Apple's own method is to search your email for a receipt from Apple or an invoice from Apple. The address on that receipt tells you which Apple Account holds the subscription, and only that account can cancel it. If it belongs to a family member, they have to do it themselves.

My downloaded magazines disappeared

Apple News+ issues are part of the subscription rather than things you own, so downloads stop opening when it ends. There is no way to keep them after cancelling, which is worth knowing if you were saving issues to read later.
