NEWS & READINGSubscription cancellation guide

How to cancel The Washington Post subscription.

If you subscribed directly through The Washington Post, go to your My Post profile to cancel. The Post states that when you cancel it stops charging your account the following billing cycle, that your digital access continues for the remainder of the current billing period, and that afterwards you can still view a limited number of articles a month like any other visitor. Two separate cases matter. A print subscription is cancelled from My Post under Manage subscription, then the Cancel my subscription link. And if you bought through an app store such as Apple, Amazon or Google Play, The Post directs you to that store's terms and gives contact numbers for each.

Before you start.

  • Check who billed you before opening anything. The Post names Apple, Amazon and Google Play as app stores that sell its subscription, and states that if you purchased through one of them you should refer to that store's terms and conditions.
  • An Amazon-billed Washington Post subscription is a real and easily missed case. The Post publishes a number for it, 1-888-280-3321, alongside an Amazon help page, so if the charge is from Amazon rather than The Post, that is where it has to be stopped.
  • Print and digital are separate subscriptions with separate cancellation articles. Cancelling one does nothing to the other, so check which one the charge belongs to.
  • Check whether you have add-ons. The Post states you can cancel an add-on subscription in My Post under the Subscription & Billing tab, and that when you cancel an add-on the primary Core or Premium digital news subscription remains active.
  • Note the timing. The Post states that when you cancel it stops charging the following billing cycle and that digital access continues for the remainder of the current billing period, so cancelling does not produce an immediate refund or an immediate cut-off.
  • Decide whether you want both ended. The Post states you also have the option to cancel both subscriptions in My Post, meaning the add-on and the primary one together.

FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE

Cancel The Washington Post, step by step.

Cancel a digital subscription in My Post

This is the route for a digital-only subscription bought directly from The Washington Post, which is the most common case.

  1. Sign in and go to your My Post profile, in the account subscription area.
  2. Find the subscription you want to end.
  3. Use the cancellation option there and follow the prompts to a confirmation.
  4. If you also hold add-ons, check the Subscription & Billing tab for them separately.
  5. Check the account afterwards to confirm no renewal is scheduled.

The Post states you can cancel your subscription at any time, that it stops charging your account the following billing cycle, and that digital access continues for the remainder of the current billing period.

Cancel a print subscription

Home delivery, same day mail and WP Weekly are print products with their own cancellation path, and The Post documents them separately from digital.

  1. Sign in to your My Post account.
  2. Click Manage subscription.
  3. Click the Cancel my subscription link.
  4. Complete the confirmation and note the date deliveries stop.

The Post states you may cancel your home delivery, same day mail or WP Weekly subscription at any time this way. A delivery hold is a different thing: it pauses the papers while the subscription and its billing continue.

Cancel an add-on without ending the main subscription

This is useful when the bill has grown rather than when you want to leave, and The Post makes the two outcomes explicit.

  1. Open My Post and go to the Subscription & Billing tab.
  2. Find the add-on you want to end.
  3. Click the Manage or Cancel button next to that add-on.
  4. Complete the cancellation.

The Post states that when cancelling an add-on, the primary Core or Premium digital news subscription remains active, and that you also have the option to cancel both subscriptions in My Post.

Cancel a subscription billed by Apple, Amazon or Google

The Post cannot cancel what another company billed, and it publishes contacts for each rather than leaving you to guess.

  1. For an Apple subscription, open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, select The Washington Post and tap Cancel Subscription. The Post also lists Apple on 1-800-275-2273.
  2. For an Amazon subscription, manage it in your Amazon account. The Post lists Amazon on 1-888-280-3321.
  3. For Google Play, open your Google Play subscriptions and cancel there. The Post lists Google Play on 1-855-836-3987.
  4. For a Google News subscription, The Post points to the Google Play subscriptions page and to your Google account subscriptions page.
  5. Check My Post afterwards in case a second subscription is also billed directly by The Post.

The Post states that for an app store purchase you should refer to that store's terms and conditions. Refunds on those charges are the store's decision, not The Post's.

What happens next?

  • The Post states it stops charging your account the following billing cycle, and that your digital access continues for the remainder of the current billing period.
  • Afterwards you are not locked out entirely: The Post states you will still be able to view a limited number of articles a month, just like any other visitor.
  • Cancelling an add-on leaves the primary Core or Premium digital news subscription active, which The Post states plainly. If you wanted both gone, both have to be cancelled.
  • A print cancellation does not end a digital subscription, and a digital cancellation does not stop the papers. They are separate subscriptions in The Post's own help pages.
  • A store-billed subscription keeps running until that store's cancellation takes effect, whatever My Post shows.

Cancelling a The Washington Post free trial.

How do I cancel an App Store free trial before I’m charged?

For a trial billed by Apple, open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Select the trial, choose the cancellation option and confirm. Apple advises cancelling at least 24 hours before the trial ends to prevent renewal. Check the confirmation for your access end date. If you track it in Subex, enter the date the trial converts as the renewal date and set a reminder 1 or 3 days before.

WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK

If you get stuck.

I cancelled but The Post keeps charging me

Check which subscription you actually ended. Digital, print and add-ons are separate in The Post's own documentation, and cancelling an add-on explicitly leaves the primary subscription active. Then check who is charging you: if the receipt names Apple, Amazon or Google Play, My Post cannot stop it and the cancellation has to happen in that store.

My subscription is not in My Post at all

That usually means The Post is not billing you. It names Apple, Amazon and Google Play as stores that sell its subscription, and a store-billed subscription lives in that store's account rather than in My Post. The other cause is a second Post account: check which email address the receipts go to.

I stopped delivery but the charges continued

A delivery hold pauses the papers arriving while the subscription and its billing continue, which is the point of a vacation hold. To stop the money, cancel the print subscription itself: My Post, Manage subscription, then the Cancel my subscription link.

I cancelled and lost access straight away, or kept it longer than I expected

Neither is a fault. The Post states digital access continues for the remainder of the current billing period and that charging stops the following billing cycle. So access outlasts the cancellation by design, and there is no refund of the current period built into it.

I bought it through Amazon and cannot find it there

An Amazon-billed Washington Post subscription sits in your Amazon account's subscription settings rather than in anything Post-branded, which is why it is hard to find. The Post publishes 1-888-280-3321 for Amazon and links Amazon's own help page. Use the Amazon account that holds the receipt, which may not be the one you use for shopping.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

How do I cancel my Washington Post subscription?

If you subscribed directly, go to your My Post profile and cancel there. For print, The Post says to click Manage subscription then the Cancel my subscription link. If an app store sold it, cancel in that store instead.

When does my Washington Post access end after cancelling?

The Post states it stops charging your account the following billing cycle and that digital access continues for the remainder of the current billing period. Afterwards you can still view a limited number of articles a month as any visitor can.

Does cancelling an add-on cancel my main subscription?

No. The Post states that when cancelling an add-on, the primary Core or Premium digital news subscription remains active. It also states you have the option to cancel both in My Post if that is what you want.

How do I cancel a Washington Post subscription bought through Amazon?

Through Amazon. The Post directs app store purchases to that store's terms, and publishes 1-888-280-3321 for Amazon along with a link to Amazon's own help page. My Post will not show a subscription Amazon bills.
