In this guide
Before you start.
- Find out who bills you, because it is often not ESPN. ESPN's own cancellation article carries this in capitals: if your ESPN subscription is billed through a third party, such as Apple, Google, Roku and others, you must visit the third-party partner's website to manage or review your subscription options.
- Separate ESPN+ from ESPN on cable. A login that came from a TV provider such as Spectrum, DIRECTV, Fubo or Verizon FiOS is not a subscription you cancel at ESPN. ESPN states that ESPN content was made available to existing ESPN+ and Disney+ bundle subscribers billed through TV providers, and those are cancelled with the provider.
- If you have the Disney+, Hulu and ESPN bundle, the Disney account holds the plan. ESPN states that the steps for managing a Disney+ bundled subscription are found on the Disney+ Help Centre, and that the email and password used for Disney+ is your MyDisney login.
- Expect the new names. ESPN's help centre calls the plans ESPN Select and ESPN Unlimited. ESPN states that ESPN Select and Unlimited subscriptions are direct purchases on ESPN.com.
- Do not delete the account as a shortcut. ESPN's help centre has a separate article stating that deleting your ESPN account does not cancel an ESPN subscription.
- If you switched from monthly to annual, know what you bought. ESPN states that changing from an annual plan to a monthly plan takes effect on your next billing date, and that by changing your plan you lose the benefit of any current promotion or price hold.
FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE
Cancel ESPN+, step by step.
Cancel a subscription ESPN bills
Use this when you subscribed directly on ESPN.com. ESPN documents this route on a computer or mobile browser rather than in the app.
- Log in to your ESPN account through a computer or mobile browser.
- Hover over on web, or select on a mobile browser, your profile picture in the upper right corner of the page.
- Select Account under the Manage My Account section.
- Select Manage Subscription.
- Click on the subscription under Plans and Billing.
- Select the plan you wish to cancel.
- Select Cancel and confirm the cancellation, which is effective at the end of your billing cycle.
ESPN states that you keep access until the end of your current billing cycle and are not charged going forward, and that it does not offer refunds or credits for partially used billing periods. Cancelling does not delete your ESPN account: you can still sign in and use the ESPN app without a subscription.
Cancel ESPN inside a Disney+ bundle
This is the single most common reason an ESPN cancellation fails. If the plan came as part of a Disney+ bundle, the Disney account holds it and the ESPN account will not cancel it.
- Work out whether the charge comes from Disney rather than ESPN by checking the merchant name on your statement.
- Sign in to your Disney+ account with your MyDisney login, which is the email address and password you used when signing up for Disney+.
- Manage the subscription from the Disney+ account settings, following the steps in the Disney+ Help Centre.
- If Hulu or another partner bills the bundle, Disney directs you to that billing partner instead.
ESPN states that the plans available to you may vary if you are billed by Hulu or a third party, that some billing partners determine which Disney+ subscription is included in their packages, and that to change your plan in that case you need to contact your billing partner directly.
Cancel the ESPN and FOX One bundle
The bundle is sold from two different places and each one holds its own subscriptions. ESPN states it is available from the ESPN and FOX websites only.
- Go to your account on ESPN.com.
- Select Manage My Account.
- Select Manage with MyDisney.
- Select the plan you wish to cancel and select Cancel.
ESPN states you keep access until the end of your billing cycle and that pausing is not available on this bundle. ESPN also states that you see one monthly charge from the platform where you purchased the bundle, and to manage or cancel you go back to that same platform: if you bought it from FOX, cancel it at FOX.
Cancel a subscription a store or TV provider bills
ESPN repeats this instruction across several help articles because it is the case its support cannot resolve for you.
- Check the merchant name on your card statement to identify who charges you.
- If it reads Apple, open Settings on your device, tap your name, tap Subscriptions and cancel ESPN there.
- If it reads Google, cancel it in the Google Play subscriptions list.
- If it reads Roku or Amazon, cancel it in that account's subscription list.
- If ESPN came with a cable or streaming TV package such as Spectrum, DIRECTV, Fubo or Verizon FiOS, contact that provider: there is no separate ESPN subscription to cancel.
What happens next?
- Access continues to the end of the current billing cycle. ESPN states you will not be charged moving forward and that it does not offer refunds or credits for partially used billing periods.
- Your ESPN account stays open. ESPN states that cancelling does not delete the account and that you can still log in and use the ESPN app without a subscription.
- Free ESPN content, scores and fantasy football remain available without a subscription.
- If MLB.TV was attached to your plan, it is a separate subscription. ESPN states that removing ESPN Unlimited does not automatically cancel MLB.TV unless you choose to cancel both at the same time in your account settings.
- Cancelling ESPN does not affect a Disney+ or Hulu subscription billed separately, and cancelling Disney+ does not by itself cancel an ESPN plan that ESPN bills.
WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK
If you get stuck.
ESPN+ is not in my account and I cannot find anything to cancel
Two likely causes. The plan may have been renamed: ESPN's help centre now calls the plans ESPN Select and ESPN Unlimited, and it published an article explaining why existing ESPN+ subscribers were emailed about the change. Or the plan is not billed by ESPN at all. ESPN states that ESPN Select and Unlimited subscriptions are direct purchases on ESPN.com, and that anything billed by Apple, Google, Roku or a TV provider is managed on that partner's site. Check the merchant name on your statement to settle it.
I cancelled ESPN but Disney is still charging me
Then the Disney+ bundle holds the plan, not ESPN. ESPN states that the steps for managing a Disney+ bundled subscription are on the Disney+ Help Centre, and points you at your MyDisney login. Cancelling ESPN inside a bundle is done in the Disney account. If a billing partner such as Hulu sits in front of Disney, ESPN states you need to contact that partner directly.
I deleted my ESPN account and the charges kept coming
Deleting the account is not a cancellation, and ESPN publishes a separate article saying exactly that: deleting your ESPN account does not cancel any ESPN subscription. If the account is already gone, work from the merchant name on the statement and cancel with whoever is billing you, whether that is Disney, Apple, Google, Roku or a TV provider.
I cancelled ESPN Unlimited but MLB.TV is still being charged
They are two subscriptions that happen to sit in one account. ESPN states that removing ESPN Unlimited from your subscription will not automatically cancel your MLB.TV subscription unless you choose to cancel both at the same time in your account settings. Go back into the account and cancel the MLB.TV line as well, or, if MLB bills it, cancel it at MLB.
I want to pause ESPN over the off-season
ESPN does not offer it on the bundle. ESPN states flatly that pausing is not available for the ESPN and FOX One bundle, and its cancellation article describes cancelling rather than pausing. The practical equivalent is cancelling before the renewal and subscribing again when the season starts, accepting that you lose any promotion or price hold you were on.
Still not cancelled?Common reasons a subscription will not cancel
GOOD TO KNOW
Questions, answered.
How do I cancel ESPN+?
If ESPN bills you, sign in on a browser, select your profile picture, choose Account under Manage My Account, select Manage Subscription, click the subscription under Plans and Billing, select the plan and select Cancel. If Apple, Google, Roku, a TV provider or a Disney+ bundle bills you, cancel it there instead.
Is ESPN+ the same as ESPN Unlimited?
ESPN's help centre now describes the subscription plans as ESPN Select and ESPN Unlimited, and published an article about existing ESPN+ subscribers receiving an email about their account becoming ESPN Unlimited. If your account shows one of the new names, that is the plan to cancel.
Do I get a refund for the rest of the month?
No. ESPN states that it does not offer refunds or credits for partially used billing periods, and that access continues to the end of the current billing cycle.
Does cancelling ESPN delete my account or my fantasy teams?
No. ESPN states that cancelling your subscription does not delete your ESPN account, and that you can still log in with your ESPN credentials and use the ESPN app without a subscription.
