STREAMINGSubscription cancellation guide

How to cancel Plex Pass subscription.

Plex Pass can be billed by Plex or by one of four stores, and only the biller can cancel it. If Plex bills you, sign in on the Plex website, open the account Subscriptions and Payments page, and cancel the future renewal from there: Plex states that page is where you manage a subscription, upgrade a plan, cancel future renewal, view receipts and update your payment method. If you bought Plex Pass inside an app, that store holds it. Plex states that a subscription bought in the iOS or Apple TV app is billed through the App Store and managed from your iOS device or computer, that one bought in the Android app is billed through Google Play, and that Amazon and Roku purchases are managed in those accounts. One thing that stops the question entirely: a lifetime Plex Pass is a one-off purchase rather than a recurring subscription, so there is no renewal to cancel.

Before you start.

  • Check whether you have a lifetime Plex Pass. It is not a recurring subscription, so there is nothing to cancel and no future charge to stop. If your concern is a charge you did not expect, a lifetime pass is not the source of it.
  • Work out which of the five channels bills you: Plex directly, the App Store, Google Play, Amazon or Roku. Plex publishes a separate article for each store, and the store is the only place that can stop its own charge.
  • Know which subscription you actually have. Plex sells both Plex Pass and Remote Watch Pass, and the Subscriptions and Payments page lists them separately. Cancelling one does not cancel the other.
  • Note that Plex cannot refund store purchases. Plex states that subscriptions purchased through the iOS app cannot be refunded by Plex, and says the same of subscriptions purchased through Roku, encouraging you to test the app before purchasing.
  • If you want to keep the features but change the term, an upgrade may be better than a cancellation. Plex states that a monthly-to-yearly upgrade starts automatically once the current month ends, and that upgrading to a lifetime Plex Pass gives a prorated credit for paid subscription time remaining.

FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE

Cancel Plex Pass, step by step.

Cancel a subscription Plex bills

This is the route for a Plex Pass bought on the Plex website. Plex documents the account pages on the web rather than in the apps.

  1. Sign in to your Plex account on the Plex website with the account that holds the subscription.
  2. Open your main Account page, reachable from the top right menu when signed in.
  3. Go to the Subscriptions and Payments page.
  4. Find the tile for the current subscription and use the Manage subscription button on it.
  5. Cancel the future renewal from there, and check the subscription afterwards shows an end date rather than a next payment date.

Plex states that from the Subscriptions and Payments page you can manage your Plex subscription, including upgrading to a new plan and cancelling future renewal, view existing transaction receipts and update your payment method. It also notes that for users with a subscription through an app store, not all management actions are available.

Cancel a subscription Apple bills

Plex states that both Remote Watch Pass and Plex Pass can be bought directly in the Plex for iOS and Apple TV apps, and that those subscriptions are billed through the App Store.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your name, then tap Subscriptions.
  3. Select the Plex subscription.
  4. Tap Cancel Subscription.

Plex states that because the subscription is billed through the App Store, you need to use your iOS device or your computer to manage it, including viewing, changing or cancelling a monthly or yearly Plex subscription. Plex also states these subscriptions cannot be refunded by Plex.

Cancel a subscription Google Play bills

Plex states that a Plex Pass bought inside the Plex for Android app downloaded from Google Play is billed through Google Play and managed from your Google Play account.

  1. Open the Google Play Store app, or go to play.google.com.
  2. Tap or click your profile icon, then Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
  3. Select the Plex subscription.
  4. Tap or click Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.

Plex states that you typically manage these subscriptions through Google Payments, including updating your payment information and viewing, changing or cancelling the monthly or yearly renewals.

Cancel a subscription Roku bills

Plex states that a Plex Pass bought through the Plex channel for Roku players is billed through Roku and managed from your Roku account.

  1. Sign in at my.roku.com and go to your subscriptions.
  2. Select the Plex subscription.
  3. Select Manage subscription, then turn off auto-renew or unsubscribe.
  4. Confirm, and check the entry shows an end date rather than a renewal date.

Plex states that only a monthly Plex Pass subscription can be purchased through the Plex channel on Roku, and that yearly or lifetime purchases have to be made directly on the Plex website. Plex also states that Roku purchases cannot be refunded by Plex.

Cancel a subscription Amazon bills

Plex states that a Plex Pass bought inside the Plex for Android app downloaded from the Amazon Appstore is billed through Amazon and managed from your Amazon account.

  1. Go to Your Account on Amazon and select Apps and more under Digital Content and Devices.
  2. Select Your Subscriptions from the menu on the left.
  3. Find the Plex subscription.
  4. Turn off auto renewal or cancel it, and confirm.

What happens next?

  • Plex Pass features stop at the end of the period you paid for rather than at the moment you cancel, since what you are stopping is the future renewal.
  • Your Plex account, your media server and your library are unaffected. Plex Pass adds features on top of a free Plex account, so cancelling removes the extra features rather than the software.
  • Plex Pass features that stop include the ones Plex lists as Plex Pass benefits, such as credits detection and skipping, which is why some conveniences quietly disappear after the period ends.
  • A lifetime Plex Pass is not affected by any of this, because there is no recurring charge attached to it.
  • Plex states that in rare cases you may need to restart a player app or Plex Media Server to pick up a subscription status change, so a stale status is not necessarily a failed cancellation.

WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK

If you get stuck.

The Subscriptions and Payments page will not let me cancel

Plex states the reason plainly: for users with a subscription through an app store, not all management actions are available on that page. The page shows the subscription because it is attached to your Plex account, but Apple, Google, Roku or Amazon holds the billing, and only that store can cancel it. Check the merchant name on your statement and cancel in that store's subscription list instead.

I cancelled in the app but the charge keeps coming

Deleting the Plex app or signing out does not cancel anything, because the subscription lives in the store account rather than in the app. Plex is explicit that an App Store purchase is managed from your iOS device or computer, and a Google Play purchase through Google Payments. Go into that store's subscriptions list and cancel the entry there.

I want a refund and Plex says it cannot give one

That is accurate for store purchases. Plex states that subscriptions purchased through the iOS app cannot be refunded by Plex, and says the same of Roku purchases, which is why it advises testing the app before buying. The store that took the money runs its own refund process, so an Apple or Roku refund request goes to Apple or Roku rather than to Plex.

I bought a lifetime Plex Pass and want to cancel it

There is no recurring subscription to cancel: a lifetime Plex Pass is a one-off purchase. If you are still seeing a charge after buying one, it is almost certainly a separate monthly or yearly subscription that was never cancelled. Plex notes that when you upgrade to a lifetime Plex Pass from a paid subscription billed by Plex you automatically receive a prorated credit for the remaining time, but a subscription billed by a store is not swept up in that.

I cancelled Plex Pass but a Remote Watch Pass charge continues

They are two different subscriptions and Plex lists them separately on the Subscriptions and Payments page. Plex documents upgrading from one to the other as its own process, which means both can exist on an account. Check the page for a second tile and cancel that one too, in whichever channel bills it.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

How do I cancel Plex Pass?

If Plex bills you, sign in on the Plex website, open the account Subscriptions and Payments page, use Manage subscription on the tile for your subscription and cancel the future renewal. If Apple, Google Play, Roku or Amazon bills you, cancel it in that store's subscriptions list.

Can I cancel a lifetime Plex Pass?

There is nothing to cancel. A lifetime Plex Pass is a one-off purchase rather than a recurring subscription, so no renewal is scheduled. A charge that keeps appearing points to a separate monthly or yearly subscription still running.

Why can I not buy a yearly Plex Pass on Roku?

Plex states that only a monthly Plex Pass subscription can be purchased through the Plex channel on Roku, and that a yearly or lifetime Plex Pass has to be bought directly on the Plex website.

What happens to my media when Plex Pass ends?

Nothing. Plex Pass is a feature upgrade on top of a free Plex account, so your server, your library and the core Plex apps continue working. What stops is the set of Plex Pass features.
