In this guide
Before you start.
- Identify your biller first. Shudder states that the description of the Shudder charge on your billing statement tells you where you are being billed from, which is the quickest answer when you cannot remember signing up.
- Shudder states you must cancel from a web browser on a computer, tablet or mobile web if you are billed directly. The app is not the route.
- Deleting the Shudder app does not cancel anything. Shudder repeats this warning on every platform route it publishes.
- If you paid a direct Shudder subscription through PayPal, note that there are two things to stop: the Shudder subscription and the recurring PayPal payment.
- Shudder is also sold as an AMC Networks title alongside AMC+, so check whether the charge you are looking at is actually AMC+ with Shudder included rather than a standalone Shudder plan.
FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE
Cancel Shudder, step by step.
Cancel a subscription billed by Shudder.com
This is the route for anyone who signed up on the Shudder website. Shudder states it must be done in a browser rather than in the app.
- Log into your Shudder account on the Shudder website, using a browser on a computer, tablet or mobile web.
- Open your Account settings, which Shudder says you reach by clicking your Profile Avatar in the top corner of the site.
- Navigate to your subscription and click the Cancel button.
- Follow the prompts on the screen to complete the cancellation.
- Wait for the confirmation email. Shudder states you receive one when the cancellation completes.
If you signed up on the website using PayPal, Shudder states you must also log into PayPal and cancel the recurring payment to Shudder, otherwise PayPal will continue to bill you. This is the single most common reason a direct Shudder cancellation fails to stop the money.
Cancel a Shudder subscription billed by Apple
Signing up inside the iPhone, iPad or Apple TV app puts Apple in charge of the plan, and the Shudder site will not show it.
- On iPhone or iPad: open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, select Shudder, select Cancel Subscription at the bottom of the page, then select Confirm.
- On a computer: open the App Store signed in with your Apple ID, click your name in the bottom left, click Account Settings at the top, scroll to the Manage section, select Manage to the right of Subscriptions, select Edit next to Shudder, then Cancel Subscription and Confirm.
Shudder states that if you do not see a Shudder subscription and you only have one Apple ID, you probably subscribed directly through Shudder and not through Apple. That is a useful diagnosis rather than a dead end.
Cancel a Shudder subscription billed by Google Play
Signing up through the Shudder Android app bills through Google Play.
- From a computer: go to play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions, select Cancel Subscription next to Shudder, then select Cancel Subscription again to confirm.
- From an Android phone: open the Google Play Store, tap the Menu icon, select Subscriptions, select Shudder, select Cancel Subscription, then confirm.
- Shudder states you will see a success message and receive a confirmation email from Google Play, and that the subscription stops at the end of the current billing cycle.
Shudder states that if Shudder is not in your Google Play subscriptions list, the Google account you are signed in to is not the one paying for it.
Cancel the Shudder add-on channel inside Prime Video
Shudder sold through Prime Video is an add-on channel on an Amazon bill. It is one of the two ways Amazon can be billing you, and it is not the same as a Fire TV subscription.
- Go to Manage Your Prime Video Channels in your Amazon account.
- Look under Prime Video Channels to find Shudder.
- Select the Prime Video Channels option and confirm the cancellation.
Shudder states that once you cancel, the renewal date in your Shudder Channel details becomes the end date, and you keep watching the Shudder Channel through Prime Video until then.
Cancel a Shudder subscription started on Fire TV
The second Amazon route. Shudder states that a subscription started in the Fire TV app with your Amazon billing information can only be managed on the Amazon website.
- Go to amazon.com/appstoresubscriptions.
- Find the Shudder subscription and select Actions.
- Choose Edit payment information, then View billing history, then Cancel your subscription.
Cancel a Shudder subscription billed by Roku or Samsung
A signup made on a Roku device or a Samsung TV bills through that device maker, not through Shudder.
- Roku: go to my.roku.com/subscriptions on a computer or smartphone, sign in if prompted, find Shudder in the My subscriptions list, and select Unsubscribe.
- Samsung: go to samsungcheckout.com, sign in with your Samsung account, select the Subscriptions tab in the Purchase History menu, find the subscription and select Unsubscribe.
- Shudder notes you can also cancel a Samsung subscription from the TV itself, using the instructions for your specific model.
What happens next?
- Shudder states that a cancelled subscription stops at the end of the current billing cycle, so the horror library stays available for the time you already paid for.
- A confirmation email is the proof that the cancellation completed. Shudder mentions one for the direct route and for the Google Play route, so treat its absence as a warning.
- Cancelling does not delete your Shudder account or your watchlist. They wait for you if you come back.
- Shudder directs refund requests for Roku, Fire TV and Prime Video Channels subscriptions to Roku and Amazon support, not to Shudder. The company that took the money is the one that can give it back.
WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK
If you get stuck.
I cancelled on the Shudder website but PayPal keeps charging me
This is the failure Shudder itself warns about. If you signed up on the website using PayPal, the recurring payment lives in your PayPal account as well, and cancelling inside Shudder does not stop it. Log into PayPal, find the automatic payment to Shudder, and cancel it there too.
Shudder is not in my Apple or Google subscriptions list
Shudder gives two reasons. The likelier one is that you are signed in with a different Apple ID or Google account than the one that paid. The other, which Shudder states explicitly for Apple, is that if you only have one Apple ID and Shudder is not listed, you subscribed directly through Shudder and should cancel on the website instead.
I deleted the app and I am still being charged
Shudder repeats on every platform route that deleting the Shudder app does not cancel the subscription. Nothing about removing an app tells the store or Shudder to stop billing. Go back and cancel wherever the charge originates.
I do not remember where I signed up for Shudder
Shudder's own answer is to read the billing statement: the description on the Shudder charge identifies where you are billed from. A charge from Apple, Google, Roku, Samsung or Amazon names that company rather than Shudder, and a charge that says Shudder.com is the direct subscription.
I am paying for Shudder and AMC+ and did not mean to
Shudder and AMC+ are both AMC Networks services and AMC+ includes Shudder content, so people end up holding both without noticing. Check your statements for two separate charges. Cancelling one does not touch the other, and each follows whichever platform sold it.
Still not cancelled?Common reasons a subscription will not cancel How to cancel an app subscription
GOOD TO KNOW
Questions, answered.
How do I cancel Shudder?
If Shudder.com bills you, sign in on a web browser, open Account settings from your profile avatar, find your subscription and click Cancel, then follow the prompts. If Apple, Google, Roku, Samsung, Fire TV or Prime Video Channels bills you, cancel it with that company instead.
Can I cancel Shudder in the app?
Not for a direct subscription. Shudder states you must cancel through a web browser on a computer, tablet or mobile web. Deleting the app does not cancel anything on any platform.
Do I keep watching Shudder after I cancel?
Yes. Shudder states the subscription stops at the end of the current billing cycle. For a Prime Video channel, Shudder states the renewal date becomes the end date and you keep access until then.
Can Shudder cancel a subscription I bought through Apple or Amazon?
No. Those subscriptions belong to the store that sold them, and Shudder directs refund requests for Roku, Fire TV and Prime Video Channels to Roku and Amazon support rather than handling them itself.
