MUSIC & AUDIOSubscription cancellation guide

How to cancel SiriusXM subscription.

Start by working out who bills you, because that decides everything else. For a subscription bought directly from SiriusXM, the company documents two routes: the Subscriptions tab in the Online Account Center, or calling 866-635-8641. SiriusXM states that once cancelled, your subscription stops at the end of the current billing cycle. If you subscribed inside the SiriusXM app on an iPhone, through Google Play, through Roku or through T-Mobile, SiriusXM cannot cancel it: that billing entity does, and the cancellation happens there. A trial that came with a vehicle is its own case and SiriusXM states those trials are non-refundable and non-transferable.

Before you start.

  • Identify the billing entity before you do anything else. SiriusXM states that if you purchased through the SiriusXM app or another retailer, you must manage your subscription and payment directly with the billing entity you purchased from. A direct SiriusXM subscription, an Apple in-app purchase, a Google Play purchase, a Roku purchase and a T-Mobile plan are four different cancellations in four different places.
  • Expect a retention conversation on the phone route, and know what you are asking for. SiriusXM is widely reported to offer discounted rates to subscribers who call to cancel. That offer is real, so if the price rather than the service is the problem, a call may be worth making on purpose. If you want out, say you want the subscription cancelled and do not accept a changed plan, because accepting an offer leaves the subscription running at a new rate.
  • Check your plan end date first. SiriusXM directs subscribers to the Subscriptions tab in the Online Account Center to see the plan end date, and knowing it tells you what cancelling actually saves.
  • A vehicle trial is different from a plan you signed up for. SiriusXM states that trial subscriptions included with vehicles are non-refundable and non-transferable, and that if you are returning or selling the vehicle before the trial ends you should contact SiriusXM to update the account.
  • Consider suspending instead if the reason is temporary, such as a car you will not drive for a season. SiriusXM states you can temporarily suspend one time in any calendar year for up to six months, but that suspension requests cannot be completed online and you have to call (866) 635-8642.
  • If you are on a promotional rate, note that suspending does not buy you time on it. SiriusXM states that a suspension requested during a promotional period does not change the promotion end date.

FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE

Cancel SiriusXM, step by step.

Cancel a SiriusXM direct subscription online

This is the route for a subscription bought or a trial started directly with SiriusXM, including over the phone with a SiriusXM agent. It is the only self-service route SiriusXM documents.

  1. Sign in to the SiriusXM Online Account Center with the account the subscription is on.
  2. Go to the Subscriptions tab.
  3. Find the subscription you want to end, and use the cancellation option there.
  4. Work through every prompt to a confirmation rather than closing the tab partway, and keep the confirmation.
  5. Return to the Subscriptions tab afterwards and check the plan no longer shows a renewal.

SiriusXM states that once cancelled, your subscription will stop at the end of the current billing cycle. Access does not end the moment you cancel. If the Subscriptions tab does not offer a cancellation for your particular plan, the phone route below is the documented alternative rather than a workaround.

Cancel SiriusXM by phone

SiriusXM documents a phone line alongside the online route, and for some plans and accounts it is the route that actually completes. It is also where the retention offers happen.

  1. Call 866-635-8641, the number SiriusXM lists for cancelling a direct-billed subscription.
  2. Have the account or radio ID and the email address on the account ready.
  3. Say plainly that you want the subscription cancelled. Expect to be offered a lower rate or an extended promotional price.
  4. If you want to leave, decline the offers and repeat the request rather than agreeing to a changed plan, because a new rate is a continuing subscription.
  5. Ask for the date service ends and for confirmation in writing or by email, then check the Subscriptions tab in the Online Account Center.

T-Mobile customers who bought directly from SiriusXM are given a different number by SiriusXM: 1-888-635-8641. A suspension, rather than a cancellation, uses another number again: (866) 635-8642.

Cancel a SiriusXM subscription billed by Apple

If you subscribed inside the SiriusXM app on an iPhone or iPad, Apple is the biller. SiriusXM directs these subscribers to Apple's cancellation process and cannot stop the charge itself.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your name at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Select the SiriusXM entry.
  5. Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.

SiriusXM repeats Apple's warning on its own help page: if you do not cancel more than 24 hours before your renewal date, your subscription might renew. Calling SiriusXM will not stop an Apple charge.

Cancel a SiriusXM subscription billed by Google Play

A subscription started in the SiriusXM Android app is a Google Play purchase, and SiriusXM directs these subscribers to Google Play.

  1. Open the Google Play Store app using the Google Account that bought the subscription.
  2. Tap your profile icon in the top right.
  3. Select Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
  4. Select SiriusXM.
  5. Tap Cancel subscription and complete the confirmation.

SiriusXM gives the same 24-hour warning for Google Play purchases: cancelling less than 24 hours before the renewal date may not stop that renewal.

Cancel a Roku, T-Mobile or podcast subscription

These are the routes people most often miss, because the SiriusXM app is the thing they use while a different company takes the money.

  1. For a Roku-billed subscription, SiriusXM states the cancellation happens at my.roku.com rather than inside the app: open your subscriptions there, choose the cancellation option and select a reason.
  2. For a T-Mobile-billed subscription, SiriusXM directs you to cancel with T-Mobile through your T-Mobile account, by dialling 611 from your handset, or by calling 1-800-937-8997.
  3. For SiriusXM Podcasts+ bought through Apple Podcasts, cancel through Apple. For a Supporting Cast subscription, SiriusXM directs you to siriusxm.supportingcast.fm/account.
  4. In every case, check your statement afterwards against the company that actually charged you rather than against SiriusXM.

What happens next?

  • SiriusXM states that once cancelled, the subscription stops at the end of the current billing cycle, so the radio keeps working until then.
  • Cancelling does not refund what you have already paid. SiriusXM publishes no self-service refund route, so a refund is a request to make on the phone, not something the cancellation triggers.
  • A vehicle trial is not refunded on cancellation: SiriusXM states trials included with vehicles are non-refundable and non-transferable.
  • Cancelling one subscription does not touch another on the same account. Accounts with more than one vehicle or a separate streaming plan carry separate subscriptions, and each has its own end date on the Subscriptions tab.
  • Selling or returning the vehicle does not cancel anything by itself. SiriusXM asks you to contact it to update the account, otherwise the subscription follows the radio.

WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK

If you get stuck.

There is no cancel option in my account, only a phone number

This is the single most common SiriusXM complaint. SiriusXM documents both the Subscriptions tab and the 866-635-8641 phone line as cancellation routes, and which one your account offers depends on the plan. If the Subscriptions tab shows no way to end the plan, that is not a bug you can work around by hunting further: the phone line is the documented route for your account. Call it, say you want to cancel, and get the end date confirmed.

The agent gave me a cheaper rate instead of cancelling

That is a retention offer, and accepting it does not cancel anything: it leaves the subscription running at a different price with a new promotional period. If you meant to leave, say so explicitly and decline the offer, then confirm the end date. If you only wanted a lower price, accept it knowingly and note when the promotional rate expires, because SiriusXM returns to the standard rate after it.

I was charged after my free trial in a new car

A vehicle trial is designed to convert. SiriusXM's own guidance during a trial is to sign up for a plan that begins when the trial ends, and a payment method on the account is what makes the conversion possible. Check the plan end date on the Subscriptions tab against the charge date. SiriusXM states trials included with vehicles are non-refundable, so what is left is cancelling the paid plan that followed, which stops the next cycle rather than the charge already taken.

I cancelled but the radio still plays and I expect another bill

Continued access is expected: SiriusXM states a cancelled subscription stops at the end of the current billing cycle, not on the day you cancel. What matters is whether a renewal is still scheduled. Sign in to the Online Account Center, open the Subscriptions tab, and look at the plan end date. If a renewal date is still showing after the cancellation confirmation, treat the cancellation as incomplete and call.

SiriusXM says the subscription is not mine to cancel

That means another company bills it. SiriusXM states that a subscription bought through the SiriusXM app or another retailer must be managed with the billing entity you purchased from, and it lists Apple, Google Play, Roku and T-Mobile among them. Look at the receipt or the statement line: whoever took the money is who cancels it. A second cause is a second account, since a vehicle trial often creates its own account under a different email address from the one you use now.

I deleted the SiriusXM app, is that enough?

No. SiriusXM states plainly that uninstalling the SiriusXM app will not cancel your subscription. The billing sits with whoever sold it, the Online Account Center for a direct subscription or the store for an app purchase, and it keeps renewing until you cancel it there. A radio in a car does not stop billing when a phone app is removed either.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

Can I cancel SiriusXM online, or do I have to call?

SiriusXM documents both. It states you can cancel by going to the Subscriptions tab in the Online Account Center, or by calling 866-635-8641. Which routes your account offers depends on the plan, and subscribers who find no cancellation option online are left with the phone line.

When does my SiriusXM service actually stop?

SiriusXM states that once cancelled, your subscription will stop at the end of the current billing cycle. You keep access until then, and cancelling early in a cycle does not shorten it or return the unused part.

Can I pause SiriusXM instead of cancelling?

Yes, within limits SiriusXM publishes. It states you can temporarily suspend one time in any calendar year for up to six months, that suspension requests cannot be completed online and require a call to (866) 635-8642, and that a suspended subscription reactivates automatically on the date you request or the six-month anniversary, whichever is earlier.

Is the free trial that came with my car refundable?

No. SiriusXM states that trial subscriptions included with vehicles are non-refundable and non-transferable. If you are selling or returning the vehicle before the trial ends, SiriusXM asks you to contact it to update the account.

How do I cancel an App Store free trial before I’m charged?

For a trial billed by Apple, open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Select the trial, choose the cancellation option and confirm. Apple advises cancelling at least 24 hours before the trial ends to prevent renewal. Check the confirmation for your access end date. Add the trial deadline to Subex and set a reminder so you can review it in time.
