NEWS & READINGSubscription cancellation guide

How to cancel The Guardian subscription.

Most Guardian products cancel from Manage My Account at manage.theguardian.com, where each one has its own cancellation flow ending in a Confirm cancellation step. The 14-day mark decides whether you get money back: The Guardian states you can cancel within the first 14 days from sign-up without giving any reason and receive a full refund of your first payment, while after that the cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period and you will not receive any refund. Guardian Weekly is the exception to the self-service route. Its terms tell UK subscribers to contact customer services to cancel, and point only subscribers outside the UK to Manage My Account.

Before you start.

  • Check how long you have been subscribed. The Guardian states you can cancel at any time during the first 14 days from sign-up, up to and including day 14, without giving any reason, and that if your first payment has been taken you will receive a full refund.
  • After 14 days, understand what cancelling does and does not do. The Guardian states the cancellation takes effect at the end of your current monthly or annual billing period, and that you will not receive any refund for cancelling.
  • Identify which Guardian product you hold, because they cancel differently. A recurring contribution, an All-access digital subscription, digital plus print, Guardian Weekly, home delivery and Guardian Ad-Lite are separate products with separate flows.
  • If it is Guardian Weekly and you are in the UK, plan to contact customer services rather than hunting for a button. Its terms direct UK subscribers to the customer service team and offer Manage My Account only to subscribers outside the UK.
  • If you are a Guardian Patron, expect no self-service option at all: that product has no cancellation flow in Manage My Account, so it goes through customer services.
  • Check who bills you. The Guardian sells subscriptions as in-app purchases, and states that if you purchased through an app store it cannot process your refund directly and you need to request it through that store's support channel.
  • Do not try to cancel by deleting your account. The Guardian states that if you make payments on a recurring basis through an active membership, contribution or subscription, you will not be able to automatically delete your account online.

FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE

Cancel The Guardian, step by step.

Cancel in Manage My Account

This is the route for most Guardian products billed directly, including recurring contributions, All-access digital, digital plus print and Guardian Ad-Lite.

  1. Sign in at manage.theguardian.com.
  2. Find the product you want to end in your list of subscriptions and support.
  3. Open its cancellation option and give a reason if asked.
  4. Select Confirm cancellation to complete it.
  5. Check the account afterwards, and keep any confirmation email.

The Guardian's digital subscription terms describe this route as going to Manage My Account and clicking Cancel Support, and offer contacting customer services as the alternative. On All-access digital, the cancellation is immediate and The Guardian states that if you cancelled within the first 14 days it will send you a full refund.

Cancel Guardian Weekly

This is the one product where the route depends on where you live, and the terms are explicit about the split.

  1. If you are in the UK, contact the Guardian customer service team: the terms direct you there to cancel, and list customer.help@theguardian.com as the email contact with phone and live chat details in the help centre.
  2. If you are outside the UK, cancel through Manage My Account instead, which the terms offer as the alternative route.
  3. Cancel before your next monthly, quarterly or annual payment date: the terms state the cancellation takes effect at the end of that billing period.
  4. If you are within the first 14 days from sign up, say so, because The Guardian states the subscription stops immediately and it refunds your first payment in that case.
  5. In the UK or EU you can also use the model cancellation form the terms link to.

The Guardian Weekly terms state that if you do not cancel before your next payment date, the subscription automatically renews for another month, quarter or year and you are charged for the renewal, and that you will not receive a refund for cancelling outside the 14-day window.

Cancel a subscription billed by an app store

The Guardian sells subscriptions through the App Store, and it states it cannot process those refunds directly.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your name at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Select The Guardian entry.
  5. Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.

The Guardian states that for an app store purchase it cannot process your refund directly and that you need to request a refund through your app store's support channel. Manage My Account will not show a subscription the store bills.

What happens next?

  • The Guardian states that cancelling after the initial 14-day window takes effect at the end of your current billing cycle, and that you will not receive a refund for the current billing period or any previous terms.
  • Within 14 days of sign-up the outcome is different: The Guardian states you are entitled to a full refund, and that it will pay the refund without undue delay and not later than 14 days after being informed of your decision.
  • Some products stop immediately rather than running out. The Guardian's All-access digital cancellation states it is immediate and that you will not be charged again.
  • Your Guardian account remains after a subscription ends, and The Guardian states you cannot automatically delete an account online while a recurring payment is active, so cancel first if you also want the account closed.
  • The Guardian states it gives at least 30 days' notice of material changes to benefits or price, so a price rise should not be the first you hear of it.

Cancelling a The Guardian free trial.

How do I cancel an App Store free trial before I’m charged?

For a trial billed by Apple, open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Select the trial, choose the cancellation option and confirm. Apple advises cancelling at least 24 hours before the trial ends to prevent renewal. Check the confirmation for your access end date. If you track it in Subex, enter the date the trial converts as the renewal date and set a reminder 1 or 3 days before.

WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK

If you get stuck.

I cannot find a cancel option for Guardian Weekly

If you are in the UK, there is not one by design. The Guardian Weekly terms direct UK subscribers to contact the customer service team to cancel, and offer Manage My Account only to subscribers outside the UK. Email customer.help@theguardian.com, or use the phone and live chat details in the help centre. Subscribers outside the UK should find the flow in Manage My Account.

I am a Patron and there is no cancellation option

Guardian Patron has no self-service cancellation flow in Manage My Account, unlike the other products. Contact customer services directly rather than continuing to look for a button, and ask for written confirmation of the date the payments stop.

I cancelled and got no refund

That is the published rule outside the 14-day window. The Guardian states that if you cancel after the initial 14 days, the cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing cycle and you will not receive a refund for the current billing period or any previous terms. Inside 14 days of sign-up the answer is the opposite: a full refund of your first payment.

I cannot delete my Guardian account

The Guardian states that if you make payments on a recurring basis through an active membership, contribution or subscription, you will not be able to automatically delete your account online. Cancel the recurring payment first, then delete the account. Deleting was never going to stop the billing anyway.

I subscribed in the app and can only read on that device

An app store subscription is tied to the store account that bought it rather than to your Guardian login, which is why access does not follow you across platforms. It also means the cancellation lives in that store: The Guardian states it cannot process an app store refund directly and that you must request it through the store's support channel.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

How do I cancel my Guardian subscription?

For most products, sign in at manage.theguardian.com, open the product and complete the cancellation through to Confirm cancellation. The Guardian's terms also offer contacting customer services. Guardian Weekly in the UK is directed to customer services instead.

Will The Guardian refund me?

Only within 14 days of sign-up. The Guardian states you are entitled to a full refund if you cancel within the first 14 days, and that after that your cancellation takes effect at the end of the billing cycle with no refund for the current or previous periods.

Why must I phone to cancel Guardian Weekly?

Its terms require it for UK subscribers: they direct you to contact the customer service team to cancel, and offer Manage My Account only to subscribers outside the UK. Email customer.help@theguardian.com or use the help centre's phone and live chat details.

Does cancelling stop my access immediately?

It depends on the product. The Guardian states that a cancellation after 14 days takes effect at the end of your current billing period, while its All-access digital cancellation is described as immediate with no further charges.
