NEWS & READINGSubscription cancellation guide

How to cancel Shonen Jump subscription.

Where you cancel depends on when you joined, because VIZ states that new subscriptions are no longer available for purchase on the website and that to start a new subscription you download the Shonen Jump app. That means almost everyone subscribing now is billed by Apple or Google. On iOS, open Settings, tap your Apple ID name, tap Subscriptions, then tap Shonen Jump and select the option you want. On Android, open the Google Play Store app, tap the profile icon at top right, tap Payments & subscriptions then Subscriptions, and select Shonen Jump. Older website subscribers paying by card or PayPal cancel through the Manage Your Membership page instead.

Before you start.

  • Work out who bills you from when you joined. VIZ states new subscriptions are no longer available for purchase on the website, so a recent membership is an App Store or Google Play purchase. It states that if you have a current auto-renewing subscription on the website, you manage it through the membership page.
  • Mind the trial week. VIZ states the membership is $3.99 a month with the first week free, that payment is charged to your preferred iOS or Android payment method at the end of your trial week, and that you should cancel prior to the end of your trial period if you do not wish to pay.
  • A second trial is not a trial. VIZ states the free trial is limited to 1 trial per user, and that if you have already enjoyed one you will be charged upon confirmation of purchase.
  • Expect no refund from VIZ. Its terms state that all digital product purchases are final and no refunds will be given. For a store-billed membership, any refund is Apple's or Google's decision rather than VIZ's.
  • Know what you keep. VIZ states the latest chapters of many series are released the same day as Japan and available to everyone for free, and that the newest 3 chapters of ongoing series are also free. The membership is what unlocks the vault of over 20,000 chapters.
  • Separately purchased issues are yours. VIZ states that Weekly Shonen Jump issues bought as individual issues or through a yearly membership are yours to keep, archived in your account's My Library.
  • There is no phone line. VIZ gives email support at sjsupport@viz.com for membership questions, so allow time if you need to contact them rather than cancelling in the store.

FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE

Cancel Shonen Jump, step by step.

Cancel a Shonen Jump membership on iOS

This is the route for anyone who subscribed in the app on an iPhone or iPad, which VIZ now says is the only way to start a new subscription.

  1. On your iOS device, open Settings.
  2. Tap your Apple ID name at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Tap Shonen Jump and select the option you want.
  5. Confirm the cancellation.

Because Apple bills the membership, the trial deadline is enforced by Apple's clock. VIZ states payment is charged at the end of your trial week, so cancel before that point rather than on the day.

Cancel a Shonen Jump membership on Android

VIZ documents the Google Play route alongside the Apple one, even though the app is most associated with iOS.

  1. On your Android device, open the Google Play Store app.
  2. At top right, tap the personal profile icon.
  3. Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
  4. Select Shonen Jump and then select the option you want.
  5. You can also manage it at play.google.com in a browser.

Cancel an older website membership

This applies only to members who subscribed on viz.com before new website subscriptions were withdrawn, paying by credit card or PayPal.

  1. Sign in to your VIZ account.
  2. Go to the Manage Your Membership page in your account.
  3. Cancel the monthly auto-renewing membership there.
  4. Keep any confirmation, and check the page afterwards to see no renewal is scheduled.

VIZ states that if you purchased the subscription through its site via a credit card or PayPal, you can cancel the monthly auto-renewing membership at any time through that page. If you subscribed in the app instead, this page will not show anything to cancel.

What happens next?

  • VIZ states your membership automatically renews every month unless you cancel prior to the end of the current billing period, so cancelling stops the next renewal.
  • The vault of over 20,000 chapters is what the membership unlocks, so that access ends when the membership does.
  • Free reading continues: VIZ states the latest chapters of many series are released the same day as Japan and available to everyone free, and that the newest 3 chapters of ongoing series are free.
  • Issues you purchased separately remain. VIZ states Weekly Shonen Jump issues bought individually or through a yearly membership are yours to keep and are archived in your account's My Library.
  • VIZ's terms state all digital product purchases are final and no refunds will be given, so a cancellation does not recover the last charge.

WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK

If you get stuck.

There is no cancel option on the VIZ website

If you subscribed recently there is nothing to find there. VIZ states that new subscriptions are no longer available for purchase on the website, so a current membership is almost certainly billed by Apple or Google and lives in that store's subscription list. Only members who subscribed on viz.com by card or PayPal before that change have a website membership to cancel.

My free trial charged me immediately

VIZ states the free trial is limited to 1 trial per user, and that if you have already enjoyed a free trial you will be charged upon confirmation of purchase. A second trial on the same Apple or Google account is not a trial. If this was genuinely your first, check the timing: VIZ states payment is charged at the end of your trial week.

VIZ will not refund my charge

That matches its terms, which state all digital product purchases are final and no refunds will be given. Its terms do note that EU and UK residents may cancel within statutory cooling-off periods if they have not accessed the content. For a store-billed membership the request goes to Apple or Google instead, and they decide under their own policies.

I cannot open the membership page at all

The VIZ membership area is both login-gated and geographically restricted. VIZ states membership is available to fans in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, the Philippines, Singapore and India. If you are outside those, or travelling, the page may show that the content is not available in your location. A store-billed subscription can still be cancelled from the store, which is not geo-restricted in the same way.

I cancelled but I want to know when access stops

VIZ states the membership renews every month unless you cancel prior to the end of the current billing period, but it does not publish what happens to vault access between cancelling and that date. The store is the reliable place to check: both Apple and Google show the expiry date on the subscription entry. Do not assume access ends immediately or that it certainly runs to the end of the month.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

How do I cancel my Shonen Jump membership?

In the store that sold it. On iOS, open Settings, tap your Apple ID name, tap Subscriptions, tap Shonen Jump and select the option you want. On Android, use Google Play, Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions. Older website members cancel through the Manage Your Membership page on viz.com.

Can I still subscribe to Shonen Jump on the website?

No. VIZ states that new subscriptions are no longer available for purchase on the website and that to start a new subscription you download the Shonen Jump app. Existing website subscriptions continue and are managed on the site.

When do I need to cancel the Shonen Jump free trial?

Before the week is up. VIZ states payment is charged to your preferred iOS or Android payment method at the end of your trial week, and to cancel prior to the end of your trial period if you do not wish to pay. The trial is limited to one per user.

Will VIZ refund my Shonen Jump membership?

Its terms state that all digital product purchases are final and no refunds will be given, with a note that EU and UK residents may cancel within statutory cooling-off periods if they have not accessed the content. A store-billed charge is refunded by Apple or Google, at their discretion.

How do I cancel an App Store free trial before I’m charged?

For a trial billed by Apple, open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Select the trial, choose the cancellation option and confirm. Apple advises cancelling at least 24 hours before the trial ends to prevent renewal. Check the confirmation for your access end date. Add the trial deadline to Subex and set a reminder so you can review it in time.

How do I cancel a Google Play free trial before it renews?

Open your subscriptions in Google Play using the Google Account that started the trial. Select the plan, choose Cancel subscription and complete the confirmation steps before the trial expires. Otherwise, the paid subscription begins automatically under the offer’s terms. Uninstalling the app does not stop renewal. Keep the trial-end date in Subex and set a reminder before the first payment is due.
