In this guide
Before you start.
- Export your vault before you cancel, not after. 1Password supports exporting from the desktop app, and doing it while the account is fully active avoids discovering a restriction at the worst moment.
- 1Password warns that exported data files are not encrypted and are stored in plaintext, and that anyone with access to them can read your passwords. Keep the file off email and cloud storage, and delete it once you have moved the passwords somewhere else.
- Choose the export format deliberately. 1Password states that a CSV export covers only basic fields and leaves out security questions, linked items, custom fields and two-factor backup codes, while the 1Password Unencrypted Export (.1pux) format is the comprehensive one.
- Check who bills you before looking for the cancel button. 1Password states that a subscription started as an in-app purchase cannot be managed on 1Password.com at all, so if Billing does not offer a cancel option, the charge belongs to Apple.
- 1Password states that it cannot refund past charges or unused time, so cancelling early does not return money. Cancelling near the end of the term costs nothing extra.
- On a family or team account, only an organiser or owner with billing permissions can cancel. A member has to ask them.
FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE
Cancel 1Password, step by step.
Cancel on 1Password.com
This is the route for a subscription bought directly from 1Password with a card. It is the only place a direct subscription can be cancelled.
- Sign in to your account at 1Password.com.
- Select Billing in the sidebar.
- Scroll down if you need to, then select Cancel subscription.
- Follow the prompts through to the end and keep any confirmation you are shown.
- Check the Billing page afterwards: the subscription should show that it runs to the end of the current period rather than renewing.
1Password states the subscription stays active until the end of the current billing period, and the account is frozen after that. You can restart the subscription at any point to unfreeze it.
Cancel an Apple in-app purchase
1Password is sold through the App Store as well. If you started the subscription inside the app on an iPhone, iPad or Mac, Apple bills you, and 1Password states you cannot manage it on 1Password.com.
- On iPhone or iPad, open the Settings app and tap your name at the top.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Select 1Password from the list.
- Tap the cancellation option and confirm.
- On a Mac, open the App Store, click your name, open Account Settings and find 1Password under Subscriptions.
If 1Password is not in the list, you are signed in with a different Apple Account than the one that paid. The receipt email names the account that was charged.
What happens next?
- The subscription runs to the end of the period you already paid for, then 1Password freezes the account.
- A frozen account is not a deleted account. 1Password states you can still view all your items, copy your passwords, and copy items to vaults outside your account. What you lose is adding new items, editing items, filling in the browser, and inviting people to a family or team.
- Because a frozen account can still be read, the export route stays open after the term ends as long as you do not delete the account. Deleting the account is the action that destroys the data, and cancelling does not do it.
- 1Password states it does not refund past charges or the time remaining on the account at cancellation.
- Reactivating restores full functionality. 1Password states you can restart the subscription at any time to unfreeze the account.
WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK
If you get stuck.
There is no Cancel subscription button on the Billing page
That usually means 1Password is not the company charging you. 1Password states that a subscription started as an in-app purchase cannot be managed on 1Password.com, so check the receipt: if it comes from Apple, cancel it in Apple's subscription settings instead. On a family or team account the other cause is permissions, because only an organiser or owner with billing management can cancel.
My account is frozen and I still need my passwords
A frozen account is readable. 1Password states you can view items, copy passwords and copy items to vaults outside your account, which is enough to move everything to another manager. What you cannot do is edit, add or fill in the browser. If you need full access back, restarting the subscription unfreezes it.
I cannot export because the account uses single sign-on
1Password states that accounts unlocked with SSO cannot export data. That is a real restriction rather than a bug, and it is a reason to raise the export with whoever administers the account before the subscription lapses, not after.
I cancelled but was charged for the renewal anyway
Check the date the cancellation registered against the renewal date, and check which channel took the money. A cancellation on 1Password.com does not stop an Apple charge, and the two can coexist if a subscription was ever restarted through the App Store. 1Password states it cannot refund past charges, so an Apple charge is a request to Apple under Apple's own policy.
I want the account gone, not just the subscription
Those are different actions and the order matters. Cancelling freezes the account and leaves the data readable, which is what you want while you are still moving passwords out. Deleting the account removes the data, so do it only once the export is somewhere safe and verified.
Still not cancelled?Common reasons a subscription will not cancel How to cancel an app subscription
GOOD TO KNOW
Questions, answered.
What happens to my passwords when I cancel 1Password?
Nothing is deleted. The subscription runs to the end of the billing period and the account is then frozen. 1Password states a frozen account can still view items, copy passwords, and copy items to vaults outside the account, so your data stays reachable until you delete the account yourself.
Can I get a refund from 1Password?
1Password states it is unable to issue refunds for past charges or for any time remaining on your account at the time of cancellation. A subscription bought through Apple is a different matter, because Apple applies its own refund policy to charges it collected.
How do I export my 1Password vault before cancelling?
Export from the desktop app: unlock it, use the export option in the app menu, enter your account password and choose a format. 1Password warns that the export is not encrypted and is stored in plaintext, so delete the file once the passwords are somewhere else.
Does cancelling 1Password delete my account?
No. Cancelling freezes the account at the end of the paid period. Deleting the account is a separate action you have to take, and it is the one that removes the data.
