In this guide
Before you start.
- Bring your Albert Savings and Investing balances to $0: withdraw all funds and sell any investments. Albert lists this as a requirement for deactivating.
- Check for an advance or loan. Deactivating does not remove a balance owed, so payments continue, and autopay keeps running if it is on.
- Decide between deactivating and closing. Deactivating cancels the subscription and keeps your login. Permanent closure ends every Albert account and also needs your Albert Cash balance at $0 and any advance or loan repaid.
- Pausing Smart money does not pause the subscription payments, so it is not a way to stop the fee.
FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE
Cancel Albert, step by step.
Deactivate in the Albert app
This is the path Albert's help center documents. Deactivating your account is what cancels the subscription.
- On the home screen, select profile.
- Tap the menu icon in the top left.
- Tap Payments.
- Tap Help center.
- Choose Deactivate or close my accounts and follow the prompts to deactivate.
Albert also offers a virtual support agent in its help center that guides you through deactivating or closing the account.
Deactivate in a web browser
Albert states you can deactivate or close your account from a web browser as well as in the app.
- Go to albert.com/deactivate.
- Sign in to your Albert account.
- Follow the prompts to deactivate, once the required balances are at $0.
Cancel a Family plan
A Family plan is billed as one monthly charge to the owner who set it up. The owner cancels the plan in the app; members can leave it at any time.
- Go to profile.
- Tap Family.
- Tap Remove family plan and follow the prompts.
Once the plan is removed, other members need their own paid plan to keep using many Albert features. A member who wants out instead taps Family, then Leave family.
What happens next?
- Deactivating cancels the subscription. Your login stays active, you keep any Albert features that are not part of the subscription, and you can reactivate at any time.
- Albert states that it does not offer refunds for monthly subscriptions.
- Any advance or loan balance remains and still has to be repaid.
- Permanent closure is different: deposits sent to the account afterwards, including direct deposits, are returned, which can take a few days.
WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK
If you get stuck.
Albert will not let me deactivate
Check the balances first. Albert requires your Savings and Investing balances at $0, which means withdrawing all funds and selling any investments. For permanent closure, your Albert Cash balance must also be $0 and any advance or loan repaid.
I paused Smart money and was still charged
Albert states that pausing Smart money does not pause your subscription payments. The fee stops only when you deactivate or close the account.
I removed the app and the fee continues
Albert's documented ways to stop the subscription are deactivating or closing the account, in the app or at albert.com/deactivate. Removing the app from your phone is not one of them, so sign in on the web and deactivate there.
I am a member of someone else's Family plan
Family plans are billed to the owner. As a member you can leave from profile, then Family, then Leave family. The charge itself stops when the owner removes the plan.
Still not cancelled?Common reasons a subscription will not cancel
GOOD TO KNOW
Questions, answered.
How do I cancel my Albert subscription?
Deactivate your account. In the app: profile, the menu icon, Payments, Help center, Deactivate or close my accounts. On the web: albert.com/deactivate. Bring your Savings and Investing balances to $0 first.
How do I cancel Albert Genius?
Genius is one of Albert's paid plans, and its fee renews automatically until you deactivate. Cancel it the same way: deactivate your account in the app or at albert.com/deactivate.
Can I get a refund from Albert?
Albert's help center states that it does not offer refunds for monthly Albert subscriptions.
What is the difference between deactivating and closing my Albert account?
Deactivating cancels the subscription but keeps your login, and you can reactivate later. Closing permanently shuts every Albert account, needs all balances at $0 and any advance or loan repaid, and returns deposits sent afterwards.
Do I still have to repay an advance after cancelling?
Yes. Deactivating does not remove any advance or loan balance. Keep making payments to avoid additional fees; if autopay is on, Albert continues to collect them.
