HOSTING & CLOUDSubscription cancellation guide

How to cancel Cloudflare subscription.

Open the Cloudflare dashboard, go to Manage Account, Billing, then Subscriptions, find the subscription and select Cancel. The trap is that one account usually holds several subscriptions: a per-domain plan, account-level add-ons such as Workers Paid or Load Balancing, and domain registrations at Cloudflare Registrar. Cancelling one does not touch the others, and Cloudflare states that changing your domain's DNS does not cancel your account or any active subscription. Cloudflare bills you for the full period in which you cancel and does not refund unused time.

Before you start.

  • List every subscription before you cancel anything. Cloudflare's Subscriptions page shows each one with a renewal date, and an account can carry a plan on each domain plus separate account-level add-ons.
  • Work out which of the two things you want. A plan is the per-domain tier, Free, Pro, Business or Enterprise, and it is downgraded by moving it to Free. A subscription or add-on, such as Workers Paid, R2, Load Balancing or Cache Reserve, is a product you switched on at the account or domain level and it is cancelled separately.
  • Cloudflare states you are billed for the full billing period in which you cancel and that no refunds are given for unused time, so the date you act on only decides whether the next period is charged.
  • A Cloudflare Registrar domain is not a subscription you cancel. It is a registration that renews, and turning auto-renew off means the name lapses. Read the domain section below before you touch that toggle.
  • If you intend to leave entirely, cancel the subscriptions first. Cloudflare requires subscriptions cancelled and domains removed before a user profile can be deleted.

FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE

Cancel Cloudflare, step by step.

Cancel a subscription or add-on

This is the route Cloudflare documents, and it covers account-level products such as Workers Paid, R2, Load Balancing and Cache Reserve as well as domain plans.

  1. Log in to the Cloudflare dashboard.
  2. Go to Manage Account, then Billing, then the Subscriptions tab.
  3. Find the subscription in the list and check its renewal date, shown as Renews on a date.
  4. Select Cancel for that subscription.
  5. Choose a reason for the cancellation when Cloudflare asks, and confirm.
  6. Return to the Subscriptions list and confirm the entry now shows as cancelling or scheduled to end rather than renewing.

Cloudflare states that cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle and that you keep access to the paid features until then. Some subscriptions have no separate Cancel action and are ended by switching that product to its Free tier instead.

Downgrade a domain plan to Free

Plans are billed per domain, so a Pro or Business plan is attached to one domain and each domain is a separate line. Moving the plan to Free is how you stop paying for that domain without removing it from Cloudflare.

  1. Open Manage Account, Billing, Subscriptions in the dashboard.
  2. Find the domain plan under Active Subscriptions and select Change.
  3. Select the Free plan.
  4. Confirm the change, and check the Subscriptions list reflects it.
  5. Repeat for every other domain on a paid plan: a plan on one domain does not cover another.

Cloudflare states a downgrade takes effect at the end of the current billing period and that you keep the higher tier until then. Cloudflare also advises making changes at least 24 hours before your billing date.

Stop a Cloudflare Registrar domain renewing

A registered domain is a separate commitment from anything else on the account, and this is the one place where cancelling costs you something rather than saving it. Turning auto-renew off does not refund anything, it lets the name expire.

  1. Decide first whether you want to keep the name. If you do, transfer it to another registrar rather than letting it lapse.
  2. Open the domain in the Cloudflare dashboard under Manage Domains and find the auto-renew setting for that domain.
  3. Turn auto-renew off. Cloudflare states its first renewal attempt happens roughly 30 days before expiration, so do this at least 30 days before the expiry date if you want to avoid the charge.
  4. Check the domain's expiration date and note it: the name stays active until that date and then lapses.
  5. If you want to keep the name, start the transfer out before expiry instead. Cloudflare states a domain cannot be transferred during the Redemption Grace Period.

Cloudflare states that registration, renewal and transfer fees go straight to the registry and are non-refundable, and that all renewals are final. It also states that an expired domain enters a 30-day Redemption Grace Period during which restoration may be possible, usually with a fee.

Remove a domain from Cloudflare

Removing a domain is heavier than downgrading it. Cloudflare states that removing a domain cancels all active subscriptions on that domain, and those are not refunded.

  1. Point your nameservers away from Cloudflare at your registrar first, or the domain stops resolving when it is removed.
  2. Delete any Logpush jobs on the domain, remove DS records at the registrar and disable DNSSEC if you enabled it.
  3. In the dashboard, open the domain's Overview page.
  4. Find Advanced Actions and select Remove from Cloudflare, then confirm.
  5. Check the Subscriptions page afterwards: account-level add-ons are not attached to a single domain and survive the removal.

Cloudflare states that removing a domain does not affect the domain's registration with your registrar, and that re-adding the domain later means repurchasing any subscriptions it had.

Delete the Cloudflare account

Only worth doing once everything above is finished. Cloudflare lists the prerequisites, and an account with a live subscription or domain will not delete cleanly.

  1. Cancel every subscription and add-on on the account.
  2. Remove each domain from Cloudflare and remove Cloudflare's nameservers at your registrar.
  3. For any Cloudflare Registrar domain, disable auto-renew or transfer it out first.
  4. Download the invoices you need for accounting: Cloudflare states billing information is removed with the account.
  5. Delete your payment information, then open your profile settings in the dashboard and choose to delete the user profile, and confirm.

Cloudflare states the deletion is irreversible and that all domains, subscriptions and billing information on the account are removed. On an account using Single Sign-On, a super administrator may need to perform the deletion.

What happens next?

  • Access to the paid tier continues to the end of the billing period you already paid for. Cloudflare states cancellations and downgrades take effect at the end of the current cycle.
  • An invoice can still arrive after you cancel. Cloudflare bills usage-based products for the period just ended alongside flat fees charged in advance, so a final invoice covering the usage you already ran is normal rather than a failed cancellation.
  • Cancelling a plan does not remove the domain from Cloudflare, and removing a domain from Cloudflare does not cancel the registration. These are three separate things and each has to be done on its own.
  • Cloudflare states fees are non-refundable, including for renewal issues and accidental purchases, so the money for the current period is generally not coming back.
  • Deleting the account removes the invoice history with it. Download anything you need for tax or accounting before you delete.

WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK

If you get stuck.

I moved my DNS away and I am still being billed

This is the single most common Cloudflare billing surprise, and Cloudflare documents it explicitly: changing the DNS on your domain does not cancel your account or any active subscription. Pointing nameservers elsewhere stops traffic flowing through Cloudflare, it does not touch billing. Go to Manage Account, Billing, Subscriptions and cancel each subscription there.

I cancelled my plan but a charge still came

Check what the charge is for. An account commonly holds more than one subscription: a plan on each domain plus account-level add-ons such as Workers Paid, R2, Load Balancing or Cache Reserve, each with its own renewal date. Cancelling the domain plan leaves the add-ons running. Open the Subscriptions page and read every line, not just the one you acted on.

The dashboard says I cannot modify this subscription

Cloudflare states this appears when the subscription is already scheduled for cancellation, so the request you made has gone through. If you want to reverse it, go to Manage Account, Billing, Subscriptions and select Cancel Downgrade in the Action column, then make the change you wanted.

I turned off auto-renew and lost my domain

That is what turning auto-renew off does at a registrar: it lets the registration lapse rather than saving you money on a service. Cloudflare states an expired domain enters a 30-day Redemption Grace Period in which it may be restorable, usually with a fee, and that it cannot be transferred out during that period. If you want to stop paying Cloudflare but keep the name, transfer it to another registrar instead.

I cannot delete my account

Cloudflare requires the account to be cleared first: every subscription cancelled, every domain removed, Cloudflare nameservers removed at your registrar, auto-renew disabled on any Registrar domain, and payment information deleted. If the account uses Single Sign-On, a super administrator may have to do the deletion instead of you.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

How do I cancel my Cloudflare subscription?

In the Cloudflare dashboard go to Manage Account, then Billing, then Subscriptions, find the subscription and select Cancel, then choose a reason and confirm. Some products have no Cancel action and are ended by switching them to their Free tier instead.

Does cancelling Cloudflare refund the rest of the month?

No. Cloudflare states you are billed for the full billing period in which you cancel and that no refunds are given for unused time. You keep access to the paid features until that period ends.

What is the difference between downgrading to Free and cancelling?

A plan is the per-domain tier and is downgraded by changing it to Free, which keeps the domain on Cloudflare with the free feature set. Cancelling applies to subscriptions and add-ons such as Workers Paid or Load Balancing, which are separate products at the account or domain level. Both take effect at the end of the current billing period.

Will cancelling Cloudflare cancel my domain registration?

No. A domain registered through Cloudflare Registrar is a separate commitment that renews on its own schedule, and Cloudflare states removing a domain from Cloudflare does not affect its registration with the registrar. To stop the registration renewing you disable auto-renew for that domain, which makes it expire.

How long before expiry should I turn off auto-renew on a Cloudflare domain?

At least 30 days. Cloudflare states its first automatic renewal attempt happens roughly 30 days before the expiration date, so turning the toggle off later than that can leave the renewal already charged, and Cloudflare states renewals are final and not refunded.

Do I get billed after I cancel Cloudflare?

A final invoice can still appear. Cloudflare bills usage-based products for the period that just ended, so charges for usage you already ran arrive after the cancellation. Flat monthly fees are charged in advance and stop at the end of the period you paid for.
