In this guide
Before you start.
- Open Renewals and Billing and read the whole list first. Hosting, a Websites and Marketing plan, email, SSL and each domain are separate subscriptions with separate renewal dates.
- Separate the two decisions. Cancelling the hosting or website plan takes your site offline. Cancelling the domain gives up the name itself, which is the one you cannot easily undo.
- Note the refund windows before you act, because they decide whether cancelling now is worth anything. GoDaddy's refund policy states annual plans can be refunded within 30 days of the transaction and monthly plans within 48 hours, and that renewal fees are non-refundable after the expiration date.
- GoDaddy states that a domain refund may be requested within 30 days of the transaction only if the product has not been activated.
- Refund requests are not accepted by email. GoDaddy states requests received by email will not be processed and directs them to phone, SMS or chat.
- Back up your website and export your email before the plan ends. A cancelled hosting or website plan takes the content with it.
- If Domain Protection is on the domain, expect an identity verification step before GoDaddy will let the change through.
FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE
Cancel GoDaddy, step by step.
Cancel a GoDaddy subscription
This is the documented route and it covers hosting, Websites and Marketing, email, SSL and the other recurring products.
- Sign in to GoDaddy and open your Renewals and Billing page.
- Select Manage Subscriptions.
- In the Subscriptions list, select the product you want to cancel.
- Select Cancel Plan.
- Choose a reason for cancelling from the list, then select Continue to Cancel.
- Check the cancellation date GoDaddy shows you, then select Confirm Cancel.
- Go back to the Subscriptions list and confirm that product no longer shows as renewing.
Cancelling stops the renewal. The product generally runs to the end of the term you already paid for, and the cancellation screen shows the date it ends.
Turn auto-renew off instead
GoDaddy's own advice when you are outside a refund window is to turn auto-renew off rather than cancel, because it stops the next charge while leaving what you paid for in place until it expires.
- Open Renewals and Billing and find the product in the list.
- Turn its auto-renew setting off.
- Check the expiry date: the product stays live until then and simply does not renew.
- Repeat for each product: turning auto-renew off on one does not affect the others.
A domain must be in active status before its auto-renew setting can be changed. On a domain, auto-renew off means the registration lapses at expiry, so use it only when you do not want the name.
Stop a domain renewing, or give it up
The registration is a separate commitment from the hosting or website plan, and it is where cancelling costs you something. Read this before touching a domain.
- Decide whether you want to keep the name. If you do, do not cancel it: transfer it to another registrar instead, which moves the renewal cost elsewhere and keeps the name yours.
- If you genuinely want to drop it, turn auto-renew off for that domain in Renewals and Billing, well before the expiry date, and let it expire.
- If you want it removed from the account now, GoDaddy's delete-domain flow asks you to tick a consent box confirming you want the selected domains deleted.
- Understand that a deleted or expired domain can be registered by someone else once the registry releases it.
GoDaddy states that refund eligibility on a deleted domain is not guaranteed, and that renewal fees are non-refundable after the expiration date. Giving up a domain is not a route to a refund.
Close the GoDaddy account
Only after everything else is gone. GoDaddy requires the account to be emptied first, and closing it forfeits any refund you had not yet claimed.
- Cancel and delete every product in the account.
- Wait at least 24 hours after the last product is deleted before attempting the closure.
- Claim any refund you are entitled to before closing, by phone, SMS or chat.
- Follow GoDaddy's account closure steps from your account settings and confirm.
GoDaddy states that once the account is closed your account data is deleted and you are no longer eligible for a refund that its refund policy would otherwise permit.
If an Apple or Google subscription is involved
GoDaddy's mobile apps exist, and a subscription bought inside an app is billed by the store rather than by GoDaddy, which means GoDaddy cannot cancel it for you. Check the receipt to see which applies.
- Find the receipt email for the charge. One from Apple or Google means that store bills you.
- On iPhone or iPad: open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, select the subscription and tap Cancel Subscription.
- On Android: open the Google Play Store app, tap your profile icon, select Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions, select the subscription and tap Cancel subscription.
- If the receipt comes from GoDaddy instead, use the Renewals and Billing route above: the store has nothing to cancel.
Domains and hosting are billed by GoDaddy directly and will not appear in an Apple or Google subscriptions list. If nothing is listed there, the charge is GoDaddy's own.
What happens next?
- Cancelling stops the renewal. The product usually runs to the end of the term already paid for, and the cancellation screen shows that date.
- The domain keeps renewing unless you dealt with it separately. This is the most common reason a GoDaddy charge arrives after someone believes they cancelled everything.
- A website or hosting plan that ends takes the site with it. Export the files, the database and the email before the end date, not after.
- GoDaddy states renewal fees are non-refundable after the expiration date, so a renewal you let through is generally final.
- Closing the account ends any remaining refund eligibility, so claim first and close afterwards.
WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK
If you get stuck.
I cancelled my plan but GoDaddy charged me again
Check what the new charge is for. A GoDaddy account normally holds several subscriptions on different dates, and the domain registration is the one people forget, because it renews yearly rather than monthly and is easy to miss between website plan charges. Open Renewals and Billing and read every line, not just the product you cancelled.
My refund request by email went nowhere
It would not be processed. GoDaddy states refund requests received by email are not processed, and directs them to phone, SMS or chat instead. Contact GoDaddy through one of those channels, quote the transaction date and the product, and note who you spoke to and when.
I turned off auto-renew and lost the domain
Auto-renew off on a domain means the registration lapses at expiry, which is correct only if you do not want the name. Once the registry releases it, anyone can register it. If your aim was to stop paying GoDaddy while keeping the name, the move is a transfer to another registrar, not a cancellation.
The cancel option will not complete on my domain
A domain has to be in active status before its auto-renew setting can be changed, so a domain that is expired, locked or mid-transfer will refuse. Domain Protection also triggers an identity verification step before GoDaddy will allow the change. Clear whichever applies, then retry.
GoDaddy will not let me close my account
The account has to be empty first: every product cancelled and deleted, and then at least 24 hours of waiting before the closure will go through. Do any refund claim before this point, because GoDaddy states a closed account is no longer eligible for a refund its policy would otherwise permit.

GOOD TO KNOW
Questions, answered.
How do I cancel my GoDaddy subscription?
Go to your Renewals and Billing page, select Manage Subscriptions, select the product, then Cancel Plan. Choose a reason, select Continue to Cancel, check the date shown and select Confirm Cancel.
How do I cancel a GoDaddy domain renewal?
Turn auto-renew off for that domain in Renewals and Billing, and do it before the expiry date. The domain must be in active status for the setting to change. The name then expires rather than renewing, so only do this if you do not want to keep it.
Can I get a refund from GoDaddy?
It depends on the product and how long ago you paid. GoDaddy's refund policy states annual plans may be refunded within 30 days of the transaction and monthly plans within 48 hours, and that renewal fees are non-refundable after the expiration date. Requests go through phone, SMS or chat, and GoDaddy states email requests are not processed.
Does cancelling my GoDaddy website plan cancel my domain?
No. They are separate subscriptions with separate renewal dates. Cancelling the website or hosting plan takes the site offline and leaves the domain registration renewing on its own schedule.
What happens to my website when the GoDaddy plan ends?
It goes offline at the end of the paid term and the content is not kept indefinitely. Export your files, your database and your email before that date rather than after.
How do I delete my GoDaddy account entirely?
Cancel and delete all products first, then wait at least 24 hours before following GoDaddy's account closure steps. GoDaddy states that once the account is closed your data is deleted and you are no longer eligible for a refund otherwise permitted under its refund policy, so claim any refund beforehand.
