HOSTING & CLOUDSubscription cancellation guide

How to cancel Namecheap subscription.

Namecheap has no single cancel button, because each product renews on its own. You turn auto-renew off for the specific service: domains under Domain List, hosting under Hosting List, email under Private Email, and app subscriptions under Apps, then Subscriptions. Treat domains differently from everything else: turning auto-renew off on a domain does not save you a fee on a service, it lets the registration lapse and the name goes. Namecheap states domain registrations and renewals are final and not refundable.

Before you start.

  • List what you are actually paying for. A Namecheap account commonly holds a domain, domain privacy, hosting, an SSL certificate, Private Email and app subscriptions such as VPN, and each renews separately with its own date and its own toggle.
  • Decide, for each domain, whether you want the name or not. This is the one decision that cannot be undone cheaply: let a domain expire and recovering it means a redemption fee, if it is recoverable at all.
  • Check the renewal dates before you act. Namecheap's auto-renew attempt happens ahead of the expiry date, so a toggle flipped close to renewal can come too late for that cycle.
  • Back up your website and email before cancelling hosting. Namecheap states that websites on add-on domains and subdomains, and email accounts, are suspended and then terminated along with the main hosting service.
  • Note the refund position on domains. Namecheap states that all domain registrations and renewals are final, cannot be cancelled and are not refundable, and that a refund may be requested within 5 days, 120 hours, of registration for valid reasons, though registry restrictions can prevent it and premium domains cannot be refunded.

FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE

Cancel Namecheap, step by step.

Stop a domain renewing

A domain is a registration, not a service subscription. Turning auto-renew off is how you stop the charge, and the consequence is that the name expires rather than that you keep it for free.

  1. Log in to Namecheap and open Domain List in the left sidebar of the Account Dashboard.
  2. Select Manage next to the domain, or use the caret beside it to expand its options.
  3. Toggle auto-renew off for the domain, and check the separate toggle for Domain Privacy while you are there.
  4. Note the expiry date shown for the domain: it stays active until then and lapses afterwards.
  5. If you want to keep the name but not pay Namecheap, transfer it to another registrar instead, or use Change Ownership to move it to another Namecheap user.

Namecheap also offers Namecheap Market for selling an unwanted domain, and domain forwarding if you want to point it at another name rather than drop it. Letting a domain expire is the one cancellation here that has a cost rather than a saving.

Cancel an app subscription

This covers the recurring products Namecheap sells alongside domains, and it is where a VPN or similar subscription lives. Namecheap sets recurring products to auto-renew right after purchase.

  1. Log in to Namecheap and open the Apps tab in the dashboard.
  2. Open Subscriptions and find the subscription you want to stop.
  3. Switch the auto-renew toggle off for it.
  4. Confirm the entry now shows it will not renew, and note the date the current term ends.
  5. Check the rest of the list while you are on the page: one toggle stops one product.

Namecheap states auto-renew can be disabled for an application at any time during its current billing cycle. The subscription runs to the end of the term you already paid for.

Cancel Namecheap hosting

Namecheap documents two ways to do this and they have different consequences. Letting it expire buys you time to move your data, cancelling immediately does not.

  1. Back up your website files, databases and email first: this is the step that cannot be redone afterwards.
  2. To let it lapse, open Hosting List, find the package and turn its auto-renew option off. Namecheap states the package is then suspended after its billing date and cancelled afterwards.
  3. To cancel immediately instead, open Hosting List, select Manage next to the hosting service, choose Cancel service, review and accept the cancellation terms, then confirm with Yes, cancel hosting.
  4. Check afterwards that the domain itself is unaffected: cancelling hosting does not cancel a domain registration.
  5. For a dedicated server, Namecheap directs the request to billing@namecheap.com rather than the dashboard.

Namecheap states that all websites for add-on domains and subdomains, as well as email accounts, are suspended and then terminated along with the main hosting service.

Close the Namecheap account

There is no button for this. Namecheap closes accounts by request, and only once the account is empty.

  1. Clear the account first: push domains to another account or ask support to remove them, remove Marketplace listings, cancel or transfer SSL certificates and Private Email, and cancel or transfer hosting packages.
  2. Email domainsupport@namecheap.com with your account username, your Support PIN and your reason for closing.
  3. Expect app subscriptions to be cancelled without a refund and their data to be lost.
  4. Keep any invoices you need before the account goes.

Namecheap states that once an account is closed it cannot be re-established and you will not have access to it any more, and that the username cannot be reused, though you can create a new account later.

What happens next?

  • Each service runs to the end of the term you already paid for. Turning auto-renew off stops the next charge, it does not end the current period or refund it.
  • A domain with auto-renew off expires on its expiry date. After that it moves through the registry's grace and redemption stages, where recovery carries a redemption fee, and eventually it is released to anyone.
  • Cancelling hosting does not cancel the domain, and letting a domain expire does not cancel hosting. They are separate products with separate dates.
  • Namecheap states that domain registrations and renewals are final, cannot be cancelled and are not refundable, so a renewal that has already been charged is generally not recoverable.
  • Closing the account is irreversible and the username cannot be used again.

WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK

If you get stuck.

My domain renewed even though I did not want it to

Namecheap sets recurring products to auto-renew immediately after purchase, so the toggle is on unless you turned it off, and the renewal is attempted ahead of the expiry date. Namecheap states renewals are final and not refundable. If you ask support to reverse a renewal, understand what you are asking for: without the renewal the name goes to the registry's redemption stage rather than staying yours.

I turned off auto-renew and lost the domain

That is what the toggle does on a registration. Auto-renew off means the name lapses at expiry, which is the correct action only if you genuinely do not want it. If you want to keep the name without paying Namecheap, transfer it to another registrar before expiry, or use Change Ownership to move it to another Namecheap user.

I cancelled one thing and I am still being charged

Namecheap toggles are per product, and one account often carries several. Check Domain List for the domain and its Domain Privacy separately, Hosting List for the hosting package, Private Email for mailboxes, and Apps then Subscriptions for everything else. Each has its own renewal date.

My website and email disappeared after I cancelled hosting

That is the documented behaviour: Namecheap states websites on add-on domains and subdomains, and email accounts, are suspended and then terminated along with the main hosting service. If you have not yet cancelled, turn auto-renew off and let the package lapse instead, which leaves time to take backups before suspension.

I cannot close my account

An account with active services cannot be closed. Domains have to be pushed elsewhere or removed by support, Marketplace listings removed, SSL certificates and Private Email cancelled or transferred, and hosting cancelled or transferred. Only then does the emailed request to domainsupport@namecheap.com go through, and it needs your username and Support PIN.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

How do I cancel my Namecheap subscription?

Turn off auto-renew for the specific product. App subscriptions are under the Apps tab in Subscriptions, hosting under Hosting List, mailboxes under Private Email, and domains under Domain List. There is no single cancel button covering the whole account.

How do I cancel a Namecheap domain?

You stop it renewing rather than cancelling it. Open Domain List, select Manage next to the domain and toggle auto-renew off, and check Domain Privacy's separate toggle. The name stays active until its expiry date and then lapses, so do this only if you do not want the name.

Does Namecheap refund a domain renewal?

Namecheap states domain registrations and renewals are final, cannot be cancelled and are not refundable. It states a refund may be requested within 5 days, 120 hours, of registration for valid reasons, but registry restrictions can prevent it and premium domains cannot be refunded.

What happens to my website if I cancel Namecheap hosting?

It comes down. Namecheap states the websites on add-on domains and subdomains and the email accounts are suspended and then terminated along with the main hosting service, so back everything up first. The domain registration is separate and is not affected.

Can I delete my Namecheap account myself?

No. Closure is done by emailing domainsupport@namecheap.com with your username, Support PIN and reason, and only once the account holds no active services. Namecheap states a closed account cannot be re-established and its username cannot be reused.

Can I keep the domain but stop everything else?

Yes, and this is the usual case. Leave the domain's auto-renew on and turn off the toggles for hosting, Private Email, Domain Privacy and app subscriptions individually. Each product bills on its own, so the domain keeps renewing while the rest lapse.
