In this guide
Before you start.
- Work out which team is being billed. Charges sit on a team rather than on your personal account, and an account can own more than one, each with its own $20 monthly platform fee and its own billing cycle.
- Transfer connected Stores and Domains out first. Vercel states that restrictions in the downgrade flow require Pro teams to manually move them to a new destination before proceeding.
- Expect the team to lose its members. Vercel states that when you downgrade a Pro team, all active members except the original owner are removed.
- One account is limited to one Hobby team. Vercel states that attempting to downgrade a Pro team while you already have a Hobby team requires one team to be deleted or the two merged.
- Settle an overdue invoice before you try. An overdue account has features restricted, and a downgrade on an account in that state commonly fails until the payment goes through.
- Download your invoices if you are deleting the team rather than downgrading. Vercel states deleting a team permanently removes its invoice history and that past invoices cannot be recovered.
FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE
Cancel Vercel, step by step.
Downgrade the team to Hobby
This is the route Vercel documents for ending a paid plan while keeping the team and its projects. Hobby is free and Vercel states it has no billing cycles.
- Transfer any connected Stores and Domains to another destination first: the downgrade flow does not move them for you.
- Go to your dashboard and select the team in the team switcher.
- Open Settings in the sidebar.
- Select Billing in the Settings navigation.
- Click Downgrade Plan in the Plan sub-section, and follow the prompts to confirm.
- Check the Billing page afterwards shows the team on Hobby rather than Pro.
All active members except the original owner are removed by the downgrade. If you need them to keep access, sort that out before you downgrade rather than after.
Delete the team entirely
Deleting the team also ends the subscription, and it is the right choice only when you want the team gone. It destroys more than a downgrade does, including the invoice history.
- Transfer the team's projects and domains to your personal Hobby account, or remove them from the team.
- Download a PDF copy of every invoice you need: open Settings, then Invoices, and use the download icon on each invoice row.
- Open the team's dashboard through the team selector in the top navigation.
- Select the Settings tab.
- Scroll to the bottom of the General section to the Delete Team card, the last card on the page.
- Select it and work through the confirmation to delete the team.
Vercel states that deleting a team permanently removes the team and its data including its invoice history, that past invoices are then no longer available to view or download, and that team members, activity and usage cannot be transferred over.
Cut the usage bill without leaving Pro
Worth knowing, because a large Vercel invoice is usually usage rather than the plan. The platform fee is $20 a month, so a much larger bill is on-demand usage above the included credit and downgrading is not the only lever.
- Open the Usage section in the dashboard sidebar and find which resource is driving the charge.
- Remove extra paid seats: Vercel charges $20 a month for each additional Owner or Member seat, while Viewer seats are free.
- Cancel paid add-ons you are not using. Vercel bills them as separate line items on the next cycle's invoice.
- Set a spend limit under spend management, which can raise alerts and take automatic action at a threshold you choose.
- Check the projects still deploying. Usage accrues against what is live, not against what you remember building.
Vercel states every Pro plan includes $20 in monthly credit, that the credit expires at the end of the month if unused, and that usage beyond it is billed on-demand.
What happens next?
- A final invoice is normal. Vercel states each invoice charges for the upcoming billing cycle and includes additional usage from the previous one, so the usage you ran before downgrading is billed after it.
- A partial invoice can arrive mid-cycle. Vercel states that if accrued usage crosses a billing threshold you may be invoiced before the cycle ends, covering only the usage that triggered it.
- Projects stay deployed on Hobby, but the plan's limits apply from then on, and the team keeps only its original owner.
- Domains and Stores you did not transfer before the downgrade are the ones that cause trouble afterwards. Move them first rather than dealing with it later.
- Vercel states that once an invoice is paid it cannot be recharged to a different payment method and that refunds are not provided in those cases. A charge you think is wrong goes to a support ticket with the invoice ID, the account email and the team name.
WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK
If you get stuck.
The Downgrade Plan button does not work
Two documented causes cover most of these. Vercel restricts account features while an invoice is overdue, so clear the payment first. And the downgrade flow will not move connected Stores or Domains for you: Vercel states Pro teams must transfer them to a new destination manually before proceeding, and the flow stops until they are gone.
It says I already have a Hobby team
An account is limited to one team on the Hobby plan. Vercel states that downgrading a Pro team while you already have one requires either deleting a team or merging the two. Decide which team keeps the projects, move anything you need across, and remove the other.
I downgraded and was charged anyway
Check what the invoice is for before treating it as an error. Vercel bills the previous cycle's on-demand usage on the following invoice, so a charge for usage you already ran is expected. If the line item is a platform fee or a seat for a period after the downgrade, open a support ticket with the invoice ID, the account email and the team name.
My bill is far larger than $20
The $20 platform fee includes $20 of monthly usage credit and one deploying seat. Everything above that is extra seats at $20 each, paid add-ons, and on-demand usage once the credit is spent. Open the Usage section to see which resource caused it, and note that spend management can be configured to alert and act at a threshold.
I deleted my team and now I cannot find my invoices
They are gone from the dashboard: Vercel states a deleted team's invoice history is permanently removed and cannot be recovered. The remaining copies are the invoice emails Vercel sent to the team's invoice email recipient, so search that mailbox. Download invoices before deleting a team, not after.
Still not cancelled?Common reasons a subscription will not cancel
GOOD TO KNOW
Questions, answered.
How do I cancel my Vercel Pro subscription?
Downgrade the team to Hobby. From your dashboard select the team in the team switcher, open Settings, select Billing, and click Downgrade Plan in the Plan sub-section. Transfer any connected Stores and Domains to another destination before you start.
Should I downgrade to Hobby or delete the team?
Downgrade if you want to keep the projects and the invoice history. Delete only if you want the team gone: Vercel states deletion permanently removes the team, its data and its invoice history, and that past invoices cannot be recovered.
Will I still be billed after downgrading Vercel?
One more invoice is expected. Vercel states each invoice includes the additional usage that occurred during the previous billing cycle, so usage you ran on Pro is billed on the invoice that follows. Recurring platform and seat fees stop.
What happens to my projects and domains on Hobby?
Projects stay with the team and run under the Hobby plan's limits. Domains and Stores are the exception: Vercel states they must be transferred to a new destination manually before the downgrade, because the downgrade flow does not handle them.
Does Vercel refund an unused month?
Vercel does not publish a refund path for a plan you stopped using, and it states that a paid invoice cannot be recharged to a different payment method and that refunds are not provided in those cases. A charge you believe is wrong is raised in a support ticket with the invoice ID, the account email and the team name.
Can I pay annually to reduce the cost instead?
Not on Pro. Vercel states only monthly payments are supported on that plan and that annual billing is available on Enterprise.
