Before you start.
- Check the date of your original purchase, not the date of the charge you are annoyed about. ExpressVPN states the 30 days run from the initial purchase, and that changing the original purchase, such as upgrading to a longer billing term or adding licences, does not create a new guarantee period.
- If this is a renewal, the guarantee does not cover it. ExpressVPN states plainly that the money-back guarantee does not apply to renewal purchases, so cancelling now stops the next term rather than recovering this one.
- Find out who billed you before looking for the setting. ExpressVPN states that subscribers who signed up through an in-app purchase on the Apple App Store or Google Play do not have access to its 30-day guarantee, and those subscriptions are cancelled in the store.
- ExpressVPN states that a subscription paid with Bitcoin or through Paymentwall does not renew automatically, so there is nothing to cancel on those.
- If you are cancelling before a trial or a billing date, ExpressVPN states you should cancel at least 24 hours before it to avoid the charge.
- A subscription bought with a gift card or redemption code is excluded from the guarantee, as are some promotional campaigns. If you bought on a heavily promoted deal, check whether it carried its own terms.
FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE
Cancel ExpressVPN, step by step.
Cancel on the ExpressVPN website
This is the route for a subscription bought directly from ExpressVPN, and the one it documents.
- Open any browser and go to My subscription.
- Log in to your ExpressVPN account if prompted.
- Click Cancel subscription below Automatic renewal.
- Follow the prompts to the end and keep any confirmation you are shown.
This turns off the renewal. The subscription itself runs to the end of the term you already paid for, and a refund is a separate request.
Cancel an App Store subscription
Apple bills a subscription started inside the iOS app. ExpressVPN cannot cancel it and states those purchases are outside its money-back guarantee.
- Open the App Store and tap your profile icon.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Select ExpressVPN.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
- ExpressVPN states you should do this at least 24 hours before the end of a free trial or the next billing date.
A refund on an Apple charge is Apple's decision under Apple's policy, because Apple holds the money.
Cancel a Google Play subscription
Google Play bills a subscription started inside the Android app, and the same exclusion from the guarantee applies.
- Open the Google Play Store app and tap your profile icon.
- Select Payment & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Select ExpressVPN.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
- Do this at least 24 hours before the next billing date.
Google decides a Play refund directly only within 48 hours of the charge, after which the request passes to the developer.
What happens next?
- Cancelling turns off automatic renewal. The VPN keeps working until the end of the term you paid for.
- ExpressVPN states that refunds are generally processed within seven days and are made to the original form of payment.
- There is a currency trap worth knowing: ExpressVPN states that refunds other than cryptocurrency are sent in US dollars, so if you paid in another currency the amount that returns can differ from the amount that left because of the exchange rate. Cryptocurrency refunds are returned in the same cryptocurrency and amount.
- ExpressVPN states it reserves the right to deny a refund to a subscriber who has previously received one under the policy, so the guarantee is effectively once per account.
- Cancelling does not delete the account. That is a separate request.

I was refused a refund because I am outside 30 days
Check what ExpressVPN is counting from. The window runs from the initial purchase, not from the renewal or from the day you stopped using it, and ExpressVPN states that upgrading to a longer term or buying extra licences does not start a new period. On a one-year or multi-year plan, the guarantee typically expired in the first month of the first term.
I cancelled and was charged anyway
Two things to check. First, whether the cancellation registered on the channel that bills you: cancelling on the website does not stop an App Store or Play subscription. Second, the timing, since ExpressVPN asks for the cancellation at least 24 hours before the billing date. Keep the cancellation confirmation, because it is the evidence if the charge is disputed.
There is no cancel option in my account
The usual reason is that ExpressVPN is not billing you. An in-app purchase through Apple or Google is managed in that store and will not show a cancel control on ExpressVPN's site. A Bitcoin or Paymentwall subscription also shows nothing to cancel, because ExpressVPN states those do not renew automatically.
My refund was refused because of a promotion
ExpressVPN states that certain promotional campaigns offer benefits that are incompatible with the money-back guarantee. If you bought on a seasonal or campaign deal, the guarantee may have been traded away as part of the price. The terms attached to that offer are what decides it, not the general policy.
I paid with a gift card or redemption code
ExpressVPN states the money-back guarantee does not apply to subscriptions purchased using redemption codes such as gift cards. Cancelling still stops the renewal, but there is no published refund route for that purchase.
