SOFTWARE & PRODUCTIVITYSubscription cancellation guide

How to cancel Google One subscription.

Where you cancel depends on who took the payment. On Android, open the Google One app, tap Menu, then Settings, then Cancel membership, and confirm. If you subscribed on an iPhone, Apple bills you: open the App Store app, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, tap Google One, then Cancel Subscription. Google states that your storage and benefits do not go away immediately and that you have until the end of the billing cycle to use them. The fact worth knowing before you cancel: the free tier is 15 GB shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos, and Google states that if you are over your quota for 2 years or longer, all of your content in your Google Account may be removed, with at least 3 months of warning first.

Before you start.

  • Work out who bills you before you look for a cancel button. Google One can be billed by Google directly, by Google Play, by Apple for an iOS purchase, or by a carrier or device promotion. Each has a different cancellation route and only one of them is the Google One app.
  • Check how much of the 15 GB free allowance you would be using. That quota is shared across Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos, so a large mailbox counts against the same pool as your photos.
  • Google states that if you are over your quota for 2 years or longer without buying storage or deleting files, all of your content in your Google Account may be removed, and that it gives at least 3 months of notice by email and product notifications first.
  • Know what stops immediately once you are over quota. Google states you cannot upload new files or images to Google Drive, cannot back up photos and videos to Google Photos, that Gmail sending and receiving can be impacted, that you cannot create files in Docs, Sheets and Slides, and that nobody can edit or copy your affected files. That last one hits your collaborators, not just you.
  • Google states that in most countries or regions Google storage plan purchases are non-refundable, so cancelling stops the next charge rather than recovering the last one.
  • If a carrier or a phone promotion pays for your plan, changes have to be made through that provider's platform rather than in Google One. Google names Metro by T-Mobile as a case where a sponsored membership ends as soon as you cancel, with no remainder of the paid period.
  • If you share the plan with family, removing that sharing has consequences for them too. Google states family members stop using your available storage and that if they exceed their own limit their files stay safe but they cannot store anything new.

FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE

Cancel Google One, step by step.

Cancel in the Google One app on Android

This is the route for a membership Google or Google Play bills. It is the most common way people subscribed.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google One app.
  2. At the top, tap Menu, then Settings, then Cancel membership.
  3. To confirm, tap Cancel membership again.
  4. Check the app afterwards for the date your current billing cycle ends.
  5. If the app sends you to Google Play instead, finish the cancellation there: Play bills some memberships and controls their renewal.

Google states that when you cancel your membership, your Google One storage and benefits will not go away immediately and that you have until the end of the billing cycle to use them.

Cancel a Google One subscription bought on iPhone or iPad

Apple takes the payment for an iOS purchase, so the Google One app cannot stop it. Google's own help page sends you to the App Store for this.

  1. Open the App Store app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your name or profile picture at the top.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Tap Google One, then tap Cancel Subscription.
  5. Confirm, and keep the Apple confirmation email as your record.

Google states that for Apple App Store purchases you request a refund from Apple support rather than from Google. Cancelling in the Google One app will not stop an Apple charge.

Cancel through Google Play

Use this when the charge appears on a Google Play receipt, or when the Google One app hands you off to Play.

  1. Go to play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions, or open the Play Store app, tap your profile icon, then Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
  2. Select the subscription you want to cancel.
  3. Tap or click Cancel subscription.
  4. Follow the instructions to finish.
  5. Check that the entry moves to a cancelled state showing the date access ends.

Make sure you are signed in with the Google Account that holds the subscription. A second account on the same device is the usual reason a subscription is missing from this list.

A plan that came with a phone, a carrier or a promotion

Device bundles and carrier-sponsored memberships are billed by that third party, and Google One cannot cancel them.

  1. Check your billing details in the Google One app or at one.google.com to see whether a third party is named as the payment source.
  2. Go to that provider's own account page or app to make the change: Google states changes must be made through the service provider's platform rather than in Google One directly.
  3. If you want to keep the plan but move it onto Google billing, Google documents switching a third-party subscription to Google billing from the Settings area of the Google One app.
  4. For a Metro by T-Mobile sponsored membership, expect access to end on the day you cancel rather than at the end of a cycle.

Google states that for Metro by T-Mobile customers in the United States, a sponsored membership will end as soon as you cancel. That is the one documented case where you do not keep the remainder of the period.

Move to a smaller plan instead of cancelling

Worth doing when 15 GB is not enough but the tier you are on is too large. It keeps you under quota and avoids the over-quota consequences entirely.

  1. Go to one.google.com and sign in with the account that holds the storage.
  2. Open Manage membership.
  3. Select Change membership plan.
  4. Choose the smaller tier you want and confirm the change.
  5. Check the storage figure afterwards, allowing time for it to update.

Google states that if you downgrade your plan, your current plan remains active until the end of your billing cycle and the downgrade takes effect at the start of your next billing cycle. Google also states that storage increases may take up to 24 hours after purchase, and the same lag can appear on a change in either direction.

What happens next?

  • Storage and benefits run to the end of the cycle you paid for. Google states you have until the end of the billing cycle to use them, with the Metro by T-Mobile sponsorship as the documented exception that ends immediately.
  • After that you are back on 15 GB shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos. If your data is under that figure, nothing changes for you at all.
  • If you are over the limit, Google states you cannot upload new files to Drive, cannot back up photos and videos, that Gmail sending and receiving can be impacted, and that nobody can edit or copy your affected files. You keep the ability to sign in and view your account.
  • Nothing is deleted quickly. Google states that being over quota for 2 years or longer may result in all of your content in your Google Account being removed, and that it gives at least 3 months of notice first.
  • A separate policy covers unused accounts. Google states that an inactive Google Account is one that has not been used within a 2 year period. That is a different clock from the over-quota rule and the two are often confused.
  • Google states that in most countries or regions Google storage plan purchases are non-refundable. It also documents a seven day grace period to update your payment details after a failed renewal before restrictions apply.

WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK

If you get stuck.

I cancelled in the Google One app but I am still being charged

The charge is almost certainly not Google's. Google states that an iOS purchase is handled in the App Store, where you cancel under your name, Subscriptions, Google One, Cancel Subscription. A Play-billed membership is cancelled at play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions. A carrier or device promotion has to be cancelled on that provider's own platform. Check the receipt to see which of the four took the money.

Google One is missing from my subscriptions list

Two causes cover most of these. You are signed in with a different Google Account from the one that holds the membership, which is common on a phone with a personal and a work account. Or a third party bills it, in which case it will never appear in Google's or Play's list because Google did not sell it to you.

My storage still shows the paid amount after I cancelled

Expected, in two ways. Google states your storage and benefits do not go away immediately and that you have until the end of the billing cycle to use them. Google also states that storage changes can take up to 24 hours to appear. Check the end date in the Google One app rather than the storage figure.

I was sent to a page about deleting a Google service

Stop there. Deleting a service from your Google Account is a far more destructive action than cancelling a membership: it removes the service and its data rather than ending a payment. Cancelling Google One is done in the Google One app under Menu, Settings, Cancel membership, or in the store that bills you.

My family members lost their storage when I cancelled

That follows from how family sharing works. Google states that when you stop sharing, leave the family group or remove a member, those members stop using your available storage, and that if they exceed their own limit their files stay safe but they cannot store anything new. Google documents no extra grace period for family members, so they fall straight into the standard over-quota state and its 2 year clock.

Google refused to refund the year I just paid for

That matches its stated policy: Google states that in most countries or regions Google storage plan purchases are non-refundable. People expect proration because Play prorates upgrades, but that rule runs the other way. If Apple billed you, Google directs the refund request to Apple support instead.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

How do I cancel Google One?

On Android, open the Google One app, tap Menu, then Settings, then Cancel membership, and confirm. If you bought it on an iPhone, cancel in the App Store under your name, Subscriptions, Google One. If Play billed you, cancel at play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions.

What happens to my photos and files when Google One ends?

You return to 15 GB shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos. Google states that while you are over quota you cannot upload new files or back up photos, that Gmail can be impacted, and that being over quota for 2 years or longer may result in your content being removed, with at least 3 months of notice first.

Does cancelling Google One delete my Google Account?

No. The account, your Gmail address and your existing files stay. Cancelling returns the storage allowance to the free tier. A separate policy covers unused accounts: Google states an inactive account is one not used within a 2 year period.

Can I get a refund for Google One?

Google states that in most countries or regions Google storage plan purchases are non-refundable, and that you keep access for the rest of the paid period. If Apple took the payment, Google directs you to request the refund from Apple support instead.

Why can I not cancel the Google One that came with my phone?

Because a third party is paying for it. Google states that for carrier and promotional subscriptions, changes must be made through the service provider's platform rather than in Google One. Google also documents switching such a subscription to Google billing from the Settings area of the Google One app.
