NEWS & READINGSubscription cancellation guide

How to cancel The Wall Street Journal subscription.

The Wall Street Journal does not put a cancel button next to the other controls. Its Customer Center at customercenter.wsj.com offers suspending print delivery, changing your address, updating your card and viewing receipts, and the cancellation is handled through the Cancellation and Refund Policy published there. In practice that means contacting customer service: the WSJ lists 1-800-JOURNAL (1-800-568-7625) in the US and Canada, Monday to Friday 7am to 10pm ET and Saturday 7am to 8pm EST. Its subscriber agreement states that as a general matter all fees and charges are non-refundable, and that on cancellation your access terminates at the end of your then-current subscription term.

Before you start.

  • Do not expect to find a cancel button beside the other account controls. The WSJ Customer Center lists suspending print delivery, changing your address, reporting a delivery issue, changing your password, updating your credit card and viewing receipts, and its help centre has articles for renewing and suspending but not for cancelling.
  • Plan to contact customer service, and go within the hours. The WSJ publishes 1-800-JOURNAL (1-800-568-7625) and a toll line on 1-609-212-4029 for the US and Canada, Monday to Friday 7am to 10pm ET and Saturday 7am to 8pm EST.
  • Expect a retention conversation and decide in advance what you want. A cheaper rate is not a cancellation, and accepting one leaves the subscription running at a new price with its own end date.
  • Know the refund position before you call. The WSJ's subscriber agreement states that as a general matter all fees and charges are non-refundable, and that it reserves the right to issue refunds or credits at its sole discretion.
  • Check who bills you. The WSJ sells subscriptions as in-app purchases through the App Store, and a subscription bought there is cancelled in Apple's settings rather than by calling Dow Jones.
  • Suspending is not cancelling. The Customer Center offers Suspend Print Subscription, which pauses the papers while the subscription continues, so ask for a cancellation explicitly if that is what you want.
  • If you are on an introductory rate, note that the renewal is at the standard price. The agreement states you will be notified of pending renewals or pricing increases as required by applicable law, which is not the same as a guaranteed reminder before every charge.

FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE

Cancel The Wall Street Journal, step by step.

Cancel through WSJ customer service

This is the practical route for a subscription Dow Jones bills directly, because the Customer Center does not offer a self-service cancellation alongside its other controls.

  1. Call 1-800-JOURNAL (1-800-568-7625) if you are in the US or Canada, or use the toll line on 1-609-212-4029.
  2. Go within the published hours: Monday to Friday 7am to 10pm ET, Saturday 7am to 8pm EST.
  3. Have the account email address or subscription number and the billing address ready.
  4. Say you want the subscription cancelled, not suspended and not moved to a lower rate. Decline retention offers if you intend to leave.
  5. Ask for the date access ends and for confirmation in writing, then check the Customer Center afterwards.

The WSJ also lists SMS support on +1 (877)-975-8398 and support on X at @WSJ_Support. Barron's and Investor's Business Daily have separate numbers, so use the one for the publication you are actually paying for.

Check the Customer Center first

Worth doing before you call, both to confirm what you hold and because the Cancellation and Refund Policy is published there.

  1. Sign in at customercenter.wsj.com.
  2. Check which subscription you hold and what the next charge and date are, using View Receipts.
  3. The subscriber agreement points to a Cancellation and Refund Policy on the Customer Center, but that policy page does not currently resolve, so do not spend time hunting for it.
  4. If you only want the papers to stop for a while, use Suspend Print Subscription instead, which pauses delivery without ending the subscription.
  5. If no cancellation option is offered for your subscription, use the customer service route.

The Dow Jones terms of use state you may cancel by following the procedures described in the Cancellation and Refund Policy on the Customer Center. Since that page is not reachable, customer service is the route that actually works.

Cancel a WSJ subscription billed by Apple

The WSJ sells subscriptions as in-app purchases, so a subscription started in the app on an iPhone or iPad is Apple's to cancel.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your name at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Select The Wall Street Journal entry.
  5. Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.

Calling Dow Jones will not stop an Apple charge, and a refund on one is Apple's decision under its own policy.

Cancel a WSJ subscription billed by Google Play

If you subscribed in the Android app, Google Play bills it. The WSJ's own documentation does not cover this case, so check the Play subscriptions list to confirm before assuming Dow Jones can help.

  1. Open the Google Play Store app with the Google Account that bought the subscription.
  2. Tap your profile icon in the top right.
  3. Select Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
  4. Select The Wall Street Journal.
  5. Tap Cancel subscription and complete the confirmation.

What happens next?

  • The Dow Jones terms of use state that if you cancel, your access to some parts of a service terminates at the end of your then-current subscription term, and that your status changes to that of a registered non-subscriber or free registered user.
  • The agreement states that as a general matter all fees and charges are non-refundable, and that the WSJ reserves the right to issue refunds or credits at its sole discretion.
  • The agreement also states that unless you have paid by check, your subscription renews automatically until it is cancelled, so nothing lapses on its own.
  • A print cancellation and a digital cancellation are not automatically the same, and a bundle may cover both. Confirm with customer service exactly what has been ended.
  • A subscription billed by Apple or Google Play continues until that store's cancellation takes effect, whatever WSJ customer service records.

Cancelling a The Wall Street Journal free trial.

How do I cancel an App Store free trial before I’m charged?

For a trial billed by Apple, open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Select the trial, choose the cancellation option and confirm. Apple advises cancelling at least 24 hours before the trial ends to prevent renewal. Check the confirmation for your access end date. If you track it in Subex, enter the date the trial converts as the renewal date and set a reminder 1 or 3 days before.

WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK

If you get stuck.

I cannot find a cancel option in the Customer Center

That matches what the WSJ publishes. The Customer Center offers suspending print delivery, changing your address, reporting a delivery issue, changing your password, updating your card and viewing receipts, and its help centre's Manage Subscriptions topic covers renewing and suspending rather than cancelling. The Dow Jones terms of use point you to a Cancellation and Refund Policy on the Customer Center, but that policy page does not currently resolve, which is why searching for it leads nowhere. The route that works is customer service on 1-800-568-7625.

I suspended delivery but I am still being charged

Suspending and cancelling are different actions. Suspend Print Subscription pauses the papers arriving while the subscription and its billing continue, which is what a holiday hold is for. To stop the money, ask customer service for a cancellation explicitly.

My introductory price jumped

Intro rates run for a set period and then the standard rate applies. The subscriber agreement states you will be notified of pending renewals or pricing increases as required by applicable law, which varies by jurisdiction and is not a promise of a reminder before every charge. The increase does not cancel itself, so if the standard rate is not worth it, that is a separate call to make.

WSJ says it has no record of my subscription

Check the receipt for who charged you. The WSJ sells subscriptions as in-app purchases, so an Apple or Google Play subscription will not appear in Dow Jones records as something it can cancel. Also check whether the subscription is under a different email address, or whether it is actually Barron's or Investor's Business Daily, which have separate customer service lines.

I was offered a discount instead of a cancellation

A reduced rate leaves the subscription running, usually for a fixed promotional period that then returns to the standard price. If you meant to leave, decline it and repeat the request. Ask for the end date and written confirmation, then check the Customer Center yourself, because the agreement makes fees non-refundable if another charge lands.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

How do I cancel my WSJ subscription?

The subscriber agreement says to follow the procedures in the Cancellation and Refund Policy on the Customer Center. In practice that means contacting customer service: the WSJ lists 1-800-JOURNAL (1-800-568-7625) for the US and Canada, Monday to Friday 7am to 10pm ET and Saturday 7am to 8pm EST.

Can I cancel the Wall Street Journal online without calling?

The Customer Center does not list a cancellation alongside its other self-service controls, which cover suspending delivery, changing your address, updating your card and viewing receipts. If your account offers no cancellation option, the documented route is customer service.

Does the WSJ give refunds?

Its subscriber agreement states that as a general matter all fees and charges are non-refundable, and that it reserves the right to issue refunds or credits at its sole discretion. Access continues to the end of the term you have paid for.

When does WSJ access end after cancelling?

The subscriber agreement states that on cancellation your access to some parts of a service terminates at the end of your then-current subscription term, so you keep reading until the paid period runs out.
