SOFTWARE & PRODUCTIVITYSubscription cancellation guide

How to cancel Wix subscription.

Go to Premium Subscriptions in your Wix account, click the More Actions icon next to the plan, click Cancel Plan, then Cancel Now. Wix states this does not cancel the plan immediately and that it stays active until the end of the current subscription period. Two things decide whether you are in time. Wix states a site plan may renew up to 3 weeks before the expiration date and that domains renew 30 days before, so the real deadline is well ahead of the date shown. And Wix states that plans cannot be cancelled from the Wix mobile app, so use a desktop browser.

Before you start.

  • Cancel far earlier than the renewal date. Wix states that your site plan may renew up to 3 weeks before the expiration date, and that domains purchased from Wix are set to automatically renew 30 days before the end of their subscription period. Aiming at the date on the invoice is too late.
  • Use a computer. Wix states that it is not possible to manage your plans and subscriptions from the Wix app, and that this includes cancelling a plan, assigning a plan to a different site, viewing vouchers and upgrading.
  • Understand the 14 day rule before you use it, because it has a sting. Wix states it offers a 14-day money-back guarantee for new Premium or Studio site plans on both monthly and yearly plans, and that within 14 days your plan ends immediately and you receive a full refund. Ending immediately means the site loses its premium features that day.
  • Wix states plainly that if you want to keep your plan active until the end of the subscription period, meaning turning off auto-renew rather than refunding, you must wait until the first 14 days are over before cancelling. Cancelling on day three of a year-long plan kills the site the same day.
  • The guarantee covers first purchases only. Wix states it does not apply if you are requesting a refund for a plan renewal or for the upgrade of an existing plan, which is how most large surprise charges arise.
  • Domains are outside the guarantee entirely. Wix states that Wix domain purchases are non-refundable and do not include a 14 day trial period, and answers directly that the refund policy does not apply to domains and business emails.
  • Count the subscriptions. Wix states that cancelling your site plan does not cancel any domain, business email or app subscriptions in your account, and that those must be cancelled separately.
  • Check whether your renewal price is the price you paid. A first term bought on an introductory offer renews at the standard rate for that plan, which is a common cause of a renewal that is far larger than expected.

FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE

Cancel Wix, step by step.

Cancel a Wix Premium or Studio plan

Wix bills its plans directly, so this is the route for almost everyone. It has to be done in a desktop browser.

  1. Go to Premium Subscriptions in your Wix account.
  2. Click the More Actions icon next to the relevant plan.
  3. Click Cancel Plan.
  4. Click Cancel Now to confirm.

Wix states this does not cancel your plan immediately and that the plan remains active until the end of the current subscription period. It also states you can turn auto-renewal back on at any time before the expiration date, which undoes the cancellation.

Cancel a Wix domain

A domain is a separate subscription with its own renewal date, and Wix states it is not cancelled by cancelling the site plan. Its renewal runs 30 days early, which is the earliest deadline in the account.

  1. Go to Premium Subscriptions in your Wix account.
  2. Click the More Actions icon next to the relevant domain.
  3. Click Cancel domain.
  4. Select Cancel auto renew and click Submit.
  5. Note the expiry date: the registration runs until then and lapses afterwards.

Wix states that domain purchases are non-refundable and do not include a 14 day trial period, so turning off auto-renew is the only lever. If you want to keep the name, transfer it to another registrar rather than letting it lapse.

Use the 14 day money-back guarantee

This is a different action from turning off auto-renew, and choosing it ends the plan the same day. Wix states it applies to new Premium or Studio site plans, monthly and yearly alike.

  1. Check the purchase date: the guarantee runs 14 days from a new plan purchase, and Wix states it does not apply to a renewal or to the upgrade of an existing plan.
  2. Go to Premium Subscriptions and cancel the plan from the More Actions menu as above.
  3. Wix states that within 14 days your plan ends immediately and you receive a full refund, so expect the site to lose its premium features that day.
  4. Wix states you should allow up to 45 business days for the refund to process.
  5. If you cancelled within 72 hours, Wix states the charge may simply drop off within 20 business days rather than appear as a refund, and within 24 hours it may be voided entirely.

Wix states that plans cannot be paused or delayed, and that your site plan or upgrade begins the moment you purchase it.

What happens next?

  • Your site does not go dark. Wix states that if you cancel your plan, your site is still active and can be viewed online, so you have to unpublish it yourself if you want it gone.
  • Wix states that your site address reverts to the free Wix URL, in the form siteprefix.wixsite.com/siteaddress, and that Wix ads appear on your site.
  • Wix states that cancelling your plan does not delete your site content, and that cancelling a plan does not delete the site: to delete it you cancel or unassign the plan first and then delete the site.
  • The free tier is capped. Wix describes it as up to 500MB of storage and up to 500MB bandwidth, with Wix ads displayed.
  • Wix states that unassigning a plan does not cancel the plan, so moving a plan off a site leaves the billing running.
  • Wix states that cancelling your site plan does not cancel any domain, business email or app subscriptions, which keep charging on their own dates.
  • Wix states you can close the Wix account as soon as auto-renew is off and outstanding charges are paid, without waiting for the period to end.

WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK

If you get stuck.

Wix charged me weeks before my renewal date

That is Wix's stated renewal timing rather than an error. Wix states a site plan may renew up to 3 weeks before the expiration date, and that domains purchased from Wix renew 30 days before the end of the subscription period. The date shown as your expiry is not the date the money leaves, so a cancellation planned for the week before renewal arrives after the charge. Cancel a month ahead for a domain and at least three weeks ahead for a plan.

The only option I am offered is to cancel the whole plan immediately

Read the timing rules before you back out of it. Wix states that cancelling inside the first 14 days of a new plan ends it immediately with a full refund, and that if you want to keep the plan running to the end of the period instead, you must wait until the first 14 days are over before cancelling. After that window, Wix states cancelling does not take effect immediately and the plan stays active until the end of the current subscription period, even though the confirmation screen warns about the free URL and Wix ads.

My renewal was much bigger than last year

An introductory or discounted first term renews at the standard rate for that plan, which is the usual cause. The 14 day money-back guarantee does not help here: Wix states it does not apply to a plan renewal or to the upgrade of an existing plan. What remains is cancelling auto-renew for the next cycle, which on Wix means acting up to three weeks ahead of the expiry date.

I cancelled my site plan and the domain kept charging

Wix states that cancelling your site plan does not cancel any domain, business email or app subscriptions and that those must be cancelled separately. Go back to Premium Subscriptions and work through every entry. The domain also has the earliest deadline of the lot, renewing 30 days before its expiry date, and Wix states domain purchases are non-refundable.

I cannot cancel from the Wix app on my phone

You cannot, and Wix says so. It states that it is not possible to manage your plans and subscriptions from the Wix app, including cancelling a plan. Open manage.wix.com in a desktop browser instead. There is no evidence that Apple or Google ever bills a Wix site plan, so the store subscription lists are not the answer either.

GOOD TO KNOW

What is Wix's refund policy?

When does Wix actually charge for a renewal?

Earlier than the date on the plan. Wix states that a site plan may renew up to 3 weeks before the expiration date, and that domains purchased from Wix renew 30 days before the end of their subscription period.

What happens to my site when the Wix plan ends?

Wix states the site stays active and viewable, that the address reverts to the free Wix URL in the form siteprefix.wixsite.com/siteaddress, and that Wix ads appear on it. It states cancelling does not delete your site content, and describes the free tier as up to 500MB of storage and up to 500MB bandwidth.
