SOFTWARE & PRODUCTIVITYSubscription cancellation guide

How to cancel Transit subscription.

Transit states that your Royale account is tied to your App Store or Play Store account, not to your Transit account, so the cancellation happens in the store. From the app: tap the gear icon at the top left of the main screen, scroll down to Accounts, tap the Royale banner, then scroll down and tap Manage subscription, which takes you to the App Store or Google Play to change or cancel. The trial is worth noting: Transit states the one-week free trial comes only with an annual subscription, so it converts into a year rather than a month.

Before you start.

  • Cancel in the store, not in the app. Transit states that your Royale account is tied to your App Store or Play Store account rather than to your Transit account, and warns that on a new phone you have to download Transit using the same Apple ID or Google Play account to restore Royale.
  • Check whether your trial is attached to an annual plan. Transit states that if you choose an annual subscription you get a one-week free trial, and that only one free trial is available per user. The trial is not offered on the monthly plan, so a trial you started is a year that is about to begin.
  • Do not panic at a pending charge during the trial. Transit states that if you started the free trial you will not be charged until the end of the trial period, that you may see a posted charge but a hold is put on the funds until the trial has ended, and that if you cancel before the end of the period no charges will be applied.
  • Consider the free routes before cancelling for cost reasons. Transit states it has partnered with some transit agencies to offer Royale free to all their riders, and offers a community subscription for people who cannot afford it, reachable from the Royale banner by scrolling to the section about not being able to afford it.
  • Know what stays free, because it is more than people expect. Transit states the free version keeps the trip planner with a maximum of three trip results, arrivals and departures for a minimum of three transit lines plus all transit lines with nearby stops, unlimited access to GO to track your trip, and the ability to create an account, pin favourite lines and save your stats.
  • Transit states it uses the exact same information to power the free version as the Royale version, and that you will still be able to see the next departure time for all nearby buses and trains on the free version.
  • For an Android refund, note the timing. Transit states you can request a refund on the Google Play website within 48 hours of purchase, and that if it has been more than 48 hours it can issue a refund for you.
  • Family sharing changes who can cancel. Transit states sharing works when all devices are connected to the same Apple ID or are part of the same iCloud Family on iOS, and that sharing through a Family Library on Android is not currently supported.

FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE

Cancel Transit, step by step.

Reach the cancellation from the Transit app

The app does not cancel the subscription itself, but it is the quickest way to reach the right store list. Transit publishes this exact path.

  1. Tap the gear icon at the top left of the main screen.
  2. Scroll down to Accounts and tap the Royale banner.
  3. Scroll down again and tap Manage subscription.
  4. You are taken to the App Store or Google Play Store.
  5. Change your type of subscription there, or cancel it.

If you are looking to restore rather than cancel, Transit describes the same path ending in Restore purchase at the bottom of the Royale page.

Cancel on iPhone or iPad

Apple bills an App Store purchase, and Transit states the Royale account is tied to that store account. This route works whether or not you can open the app.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap your name at the top, which is your Apple Account.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Select Transit from the list.
  5. Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.

Apple advises cancelling at least 24 hours before the renewal date. On an annual trial that means acting before the last day of the week rather than on it.

Cancel on Android

Google Play bills a purchase made in the Android app, and the Play Store settings are what stop the renewal.

  1. Open the Google Play Store app.
  2. Tap your profile icon in the top right.
  3. Select Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
  4. Select Transit.
  5. Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.

For a refund, Transit states you can request one on the Google Play website within 48 hours of the purchase, and that if it has been more than 48 hours it can issue a refund for you through its support team.

Free Royale instead of cancelling

Transit publishes two ways to keep Royale without paying, which is worth checking before dropping the subscription for cost reasons.

  1. Check whether your transit agency sponsors it: Transit states it has partnered with some agencies to offer Royale for free to all their riders.
  2. For the community subscription, tap the gear icon, then the Royale banner.
  3. Scroll to the section about not being able to afford it and tap Learn more.
  4. Transit describes this as emailing them for a free grant.
  5. Cancel the paid subscription in the store separately if a free route is granted, since the store keeps billing otherwise.

What happens next?

  • The subscription runs to the end of the period you paid for. Apple and Google both leave a cancelled subscription active until then.
  • The free version keeps most of what people use Transit for. Transit states the free tier keeps the trip planner with a maximum of three trip results, arrivals and departures for a minimum of three transit lines plus all lines with nearby stops, unlimited GO trip tracking, and account features including pinned favourite lines and saved stats.
  • Transit states it uses the exact same information to power the free version as the Royale version, so the data does not get worse.
  • What you lose is the breadth and the personalisation: all transit lines beyond the free minimum, expanded trip results, GO celebrity status with a custom emoji or nickname for leaderboards, custom themes covering the app icon and colour scheme, and the extra place icons.
  • Transit does not state that your account, pinned lines or saved stats are removed, and lists account creation, pinning favourite lines and saving stats as free features.
  • Refunds go to the store that charged you, with one exception Transit publishes: it states that more than 48 hours after a Google Play purchase it can issue a refund for you.

WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK

If you get stuck.

I cancelled my free trial but I still see a charge

Transit answers this directly: it states that if you started the free trial you will not be charged until the end of the trial period, that you may see a posted charge but a hold is put on the funds until the trial has ended, and that if you cancel before the end of the period no charges will be applied. A pending hold is not a payment.

Royale disappeared when I changed phones

Transit warns about this specifically: your Royale account is tied to your App Store or Play Store account, not to your Transit account, so on a new phone you have to download Transit using the same Apple ID or Google Play account. It is also why the cancellation lives in that store account rather than in your Transit login.

I am on Android and Google will not refund me

Transit publishes an unusually helpful answer. It states you can request a refund on the Google Play website within 48 hours of the purchase, and that if it has been more than 48 hours it can issue a refund for you through its support team. That backstop applies to Android; iOS refunds go to Apple with no equivalent offered.

My trial turned into a yearly charge

That is how the trial is sold. Transit states that the one-week free trial comes with an annual subscription, so the trial converts into a year rather than a month, and that only one free trial is available per user. Cancelling during the trial prevents the charge entirely, which is why the week is the window that matters.

The app only shows me three transit lines now

That is the free tier working as documented, not a fault. Transit states the free version includes arrivals and departures for a minimum of three transit lines plus all transit lines with nearby stops, and a trip planner capped at three results. It also states you will still see the next departure time for all nearby buses and trains on the free version.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

How do I cancel Transit Royale?

In the store that billed you. From the app: the gear icon, Accounts, the Royale banner, then Manage subscription, which opens the App Store or Google Play. Or go directly: on iPhone, Settings, your name, Subscriptions; on Android, the Play Store under Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions.

Does Transit Royale have a free trial?

Yes, on the annual plan only. Transit states that if you choose an annual subscription you get a one-week free trial that you can cancel at any time, that the subscription starts at the end of the trial, and that only one free trial is available per user.

What do I lose when Royale ends?

Transit states the free version keeps the trip planner with up to three results, arrivals and departures for at least three lines plus all lines with nearby stops, unlimited GO trip tracking, and account features including pinned lines and saved stats. You lose the wider line coverage, expanded trip results, GO celebrity status, custom themes and extra place icons.

Can I get Transit Royale for free?

Transit publishes two routes. It states it has partnered with some transit agencies to offer Royale for free to all their riders, and it offers a community subscription reachable from the Royale banner by scrolling to the section about not being able to afford it and tapping Learn more.

Can I get a refund for Transit Royale?

Transit states that a refund is requested through the App Store or the Play Store directly. For Android it adds that you can request it on the Google Play website within 48 hours of the purchase, and that if more than 48 hours have passed it can issue a refund for you.
