Before you start.
- Sign in as the account that pays. Game Pass belongs to one Microsoft account, and it will not appear on the services page of any other, even on a console where several people play.
- Know the difference between cancelling and turning off recurring billing. Turning off recurring billing lets the paid time run out and is the normal way to stop a subscription without losing days you already bought.
- Check for prepaid or converted time before you act. Prepaid codes and time converted when joining Game Pass Ultimate extend the current term, and stopping the plan does not turn unused time back into money.
- Save anything that lives inside a Game Pass game. Cloud saves stay attached to your account, but you cannot open them without the game, so screenshot or export anything you need outside it.
- Note which games you own outright. A Game Pass title bought at the members' discount is a purchase and keeps working; one merely installed from the catalogue does not.
- If you bought Game Pass through a retailer, a console bundle or a mobile carrier, the recurring billing may sit with them rather than with Microsoft.

Cancel on your Microsoft account
This is where Microsoft manages the billing for every Game Pass plan, whichever device you play on. It works from any browser and is the route to use when a console menu will not complete the cancellation.
- Go to account.microsoft.com and sign in with the Microsoft account that pays for Game Pass.
- Open the services and subscriptions section of the account.
- Find the Xbox Game Pass entry and open its management options.
- Choose to turn off recurring billing, or to cancel the subscription outright.
- Work through the confirmation prompts and check the entry shows an expiry date rather than a next billing date.
Retention offers such as a discounted month can appear before the final step. The subscription is only stopped once the entry shows it will not renew.
Cancel from an Xbox console
The console can reach the same subscription settings, useful when you do not have a browser to hand. It manages the same Microsoft account billing rather than a separate console subscription.
- Sign in on the console with the account that pays for Game Pass.
- Open the settings for your account, and find the payment and billing or subscriptions section.
- Select Xbox Game Pass from your list of subscriptions.
- Choose the option to turn off recurring billing or cancel, and confirm.
- If the console will not complete it, finish the cancellation on account.microsoft.com, which controls the same billing.
What happens next?
- The subscription stays usable until the end of the period you already paid for, then Game Pass access stops.
- Games installed from the Game Pass catalogue stop launching. They remain on the drive and ask for a subscription, so reinstalling does not help: the licence expired, not the download.
- Saved progress is not deleted with the subscription. Xbox cloud saves stay attached to your account, so rejoining Game Pass later normally puts you back where you were, and buying the game outright reaches the same saves.
- Games you bought, including catalogue titles bought with the members' discount, keep working, and any downloadable content you purchased stays attached to them.
- Xbox multiplayer access that came with an Ultimate plan ends too, so online play in games that require it stops alongside the catalogue.
- Cancelling Game Pass does not close the Microsoft account or remove your purchase history and achievements.

My games will not start and say I need a subscription
That is the plan having ended rather than a broken install. Catalogue games are licensed for the length of the subscription, so they stop launching when it lapses even though the files are still on the drive. Rejoining Game Pass or buying the game restores access, and your saves are still there when you do.
Game Pass is not in my Apple or Google subscriptions
It never appears there. Microsoft bills Game Pass through the Microsoft account, so no phone store subscription list contains it, whatever Xbox apps you have installed. Cancel it at account.microsoft.com instead.
I cancelled but the charge came anyway
Check the date the cancellation completed against the renewal date, since a cancellation made on the renewal day can land after billing has run. Then confirm you were signed in as the paying account: a household often has several Microsoft accounts and only one is billed. If a retailer or carrier set up the plan, the recurring charge may sit with them.
I have prepaid or converted time left
Prepaid codes and time converted when upgrading to Ultimate extend the current term rather than sitting as a refundable balance. Turning off recurring billing stops future charges but leaves that time to run out, so cancelling early gives it up rather than banking it.
I cannot sign in to the account that pays
The subscription cannot be stopped from another account, so account recovery comes first: use the Microsoft account recovery process for the email on the receipt. Until then the card keeps being charged, so contacting your bank is a stopgap that does not end the subscription itself.
