In this guide
Before you start.
- Understand what Brilliant does and does not promise on refunds before you cancel. Brilliant states that per its Terms of Use all charges are nonrefundable, and that any refund or credit it issues is provided solely as a courtesy, at Brilliant's discretion, and does not create an ongoing policy or obligation. There is no window to count.
- Check Subscription Settings for a self-serve refund option before cancelling, because the two are different actions. Brilliant states that if your purchase qualifies you will also see a Request a refund option, and that requesting a refund ends your subscription immediately and refunds your most recent charge. Cancelling on its own keeps your access to the end of the billing period instead. Brilliant states not everyone will see this option and it is not available for every web subscription.
- Know that the free plan is genuinely usable, so this may be a downgrade rather than an exit. Brilliant states that free users get access to all courses, can complete up to two lessons per day, must progress through courses sequentially and see occasional ads. It describes free users receiving two keys per day, each unlocking one lesson or practice set, and a limited preview of its Koji tutor.
- If you are on a Family plan, the subscription covers other people. Brilliant states that a Family plan supports up to six members, each with a separate account, so cancelling ends Premium for everyone on it rather than just for you.
- Free trial availability is not guaranteed and the terms vary. Brilliant states that Premium free-trial promotions are offered to eligible users but availability varies by account, platform and timing, and asks you to review the billing and cancellation terms of a trial before starting it. It states users on a free trial can cancel anytime.
- Do not start a bank chargeback before trying the normal route. Brilliant states that initiating a chargeback dispute with your bank will lock the payment, which limits its ability to assist, and that the dispute review can take up to 60 days depending on your bank.
FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE
Cancel Brilliant, step by step.
Cancel a Brilliant subscription on the web
This is the route for a subscription bought directly on brilliant.org. It is also the only route where a self-serve refund can appear.
- Log in at brilliant.org.
- Go to Subscription Settings.
- Select Manage subscription and follow the prompts to cancel.
- Before you finish, check whether a separate Request a refund option is shown, since Brilliant states this appears only if your purchase qualifies.
- Confirm the cancellation and note the date your Premium access ends.
Brilliant states that cancelling prevents future charges and that you keep Premium access until the end of your current billing period, while requesting a refund ends your subscription immediately and refunds your most recent charge. Those are different outcomes, so choose deliberately rather than clicking whichever appears first.
Cancel a Brilliant subscription billed by Apple
Brilliant states that subscriptions purchased through Apple or Google Play must be managed through the corresponding app store rather than on its own site.
- Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap your name.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Select Brilliant, then tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
Brilliant states that refunds for App Store purchases are handled by Apple, not Brilliant, and directs you to Apple's Report a Problem page, where you sign in with your Apple ID, select Request a refund, choose a reason and submit the Brilliant subscription.
Cancel a Brilliant subscription billed by Google Play
A subscription bought in the Brilliant Android app is a Google Play purchase, and Brilliant directs those subscribers to Google Play.
- Open the Play Store and tap your profile icon.
- Tap Payments & Subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Select Brilliant.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
Brilliant states that refunds for Google Play purchases must be requested through Google Play, describing the route as opening Order History in your Google Play account, finding the Brilliant subscription and selecting Request a refund or Report a problem.
What happens next?
- Brilliant states that cancelling prevents future charges and that you keep Premium access until the end of your current billing period.
- The account continues on the free plan. Brilliant states that free users get access to all courses but can complete up to two lessons per day, must progress through courses sequentially and see occasional ads.
- What Premium was adding is unlimited access to lessons and practice sets, the ability to jump to any lesson, an ad-free experience and full access to the Koji tutor, which free users receive only as a limited preview.
- A refund is not the same as a cancellation here. Brilliant states that requesting a refund ends your subscription immediately, so you lose the remainder of the paid period that a plain cancellation would have let you keep.
- Brilliant's separate K-5 Math Practice library is not affected. Brilliant states it is free, does not require an account, and is distinct from its main course curriculum and its Free and Premium plans.
Cancelling a Brilliant free trial.
Does Brilliant have a free trial?
Sometimes, but not reliably. Brilliant states that Premium free-trial promotions are offered to eligible users, that availability varies by account, platform and timing, and that when a trial is available you should review its billing and cancellation terms before starting it. It states that users on a free trial can cancel anytime.
How do I cancel an App Store free trial before I’m charged?
For a trial billed by Apple, open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Select the trial, choose the cancellation option and confirm. Apple advises cancelling at least 24 hours before the trial ends to prevent renewal. Check the confirmation for your access end date. If you track it in Subex, enter the date the trial converts as the renewal date and set a reminder 1 or 3 days before.
WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK
If you get stuck.
There is no Request a refund option in my settings
Brilliant states that not everyone will see this option and that it is not available for every web subscription. It appears only if your purchase qualifies for a self-serve refund. Brilliant states you are welcome to contact its support team if you believe your situation warrants an exception, while warning that most requests outside the self-serve option will not qualify, since its Terms of Use make all charges nonrefundable and any refund a discretionary courtesy.
I cannot find the subscription in my Brilliant account at all
That is the signature of a store purchase. Brilliant states that subscriptions purchased through Apple or Google Play must be managed through the corresponding app store, so they do not appear as cancellable items in Subscription Settings. Check both store subscription lists using the Apple ID and Google Account you would have used. A second cause is a second Brilliant account, so check which email address the receipts arrive at.
I asked for a refund and lost my access straight away
That is the documented trade-off rather than a mistake. Brilliant states that requesting a refund ends your subscription immediately and refunds your most recent charge, whereas cancelling prevents future charges while you keep Premium access until the end of your current billing period. If you are late in a billing period, cancelling rather than refunding keeps weeks of access you would otherwise give up.
Brilliant will not refund me and I want to dispute the charge
Brilliant asks you not to go to the bank first, and gives a practical reason. It states that initiating a chargeback dispute with your bank will lock the payment, which will limit its ability to assist, and that the length of the review varies by bank but could take up to 60 days. It advises following its own refund procedures before contacting your bank. Its support team can be reached at support@brilliant.org, and Brilliant states it aims to respond within 48 hours.
My family members lost access when I cancelled
That is expected on a Family plan. Brilliant states that a Family plan supports up to six members, each with a separate account, under one subscription. The billing sits with the person who bought it, so cancelling ends Premium for every member when the paid period finishes. Each account survives on the free plan, which Brilliant states gives access to all courses at up to two lessons per day. A gift plan works differently: Brilliant describes it as a separate Premium subscription purchased for someone else rather than a shared plan.
Still not cancelled?Common reasons a subscription will not cancel How to cancel an app subscription
GOOD TO KNOW
Questions, answered.
Can I still use Brilliant after cancelling?
Yes, on the free plan. Brilliant states that free users get access to all courses, can complete up to two lessons per day, must progress through courses sequentially and see occasional ads. It describes this as two keys per day, each unlocking one lesson or practice set, plus a limited preview of the Koji tutor. The separate K-5 Math Practice library is free and does not even require an account.
Does Brilliant give refunds?
Only at its discretion. Brilliant states that per its Terms of Use all charges are nonrefundable, and that any refund or credit it issues is provided solely as a courtesy, at Brilliant's discretion, and does not create an ongoing policy or obligation. Some web subscriptions show a self-serve Request a refund option in Subscription Settings, which refunds the most recent charge and ends the subscription immediately, but Brilliant states it is not available for every web subscription.
When does my Brilliant Premium access end?
Brilliant states that cancelling prevents future charges and that you keep Premium access until the end of your current billing period. The exception is a refund: Brilliant states that requesting a refund ends your subscription immediately rather than at the period end.
