LEARNINGSubscription cancellation guide

How to cancel Codecademy subscription.

Codecademy states that it does not grant refunds, prorated or full, for subscriptions, so cancelling only stops the next charge. Cancel in Account Settings, on the Payment and plan tab, by selecting I want to end my subscription and working through to Cancel my Subscription. The trap is what locks afterwards. Codecademy states that when the subscription deactivates you no longer have access to Pro or Plus content or to classes that you completed while subscribed, and that a cancellation terminates access to your completed projects and quizzes. Your lesson progress and your certificates are the parts that survive: Codecademy states all progress remains saved and that certificates continue to be accessible after your membership elapses. On a monthly plan you can pause for 1, 2 or 3 months instead, which annual plans cannot do.

Before you start.

  • Expect nothing back. Codecademy states that it does not grant refunds, prorated or full, for subscriptions, and that cancelling deactivates the subscription at the end of your current billing cycle, up to which point you still have access. It invites refund exceptions to be requested through its support team, but the published policy is no refund.
  • Consider pausing instead, if you are on a monthly plan. Codecademy states that pause is available for Pro and Plus monthly subscriptions only, that annual plans cannot be paused because you purchase access for a full year, that you can pause for 1, 2 or 3 months, that you are not charged for the paused months, and that the subscription resumes automatically once the pause ends. It states pause is not available if you paid via PayTM.
  • Save your project work before you lose access to it. Codecademy states that a cancellation terminates your Pro or Plus access to your completed projects and quizzes, and separately recommends pushing projects to GitHub or saving them on your personal computer if you want to hold onto them.
  • Your certificates are safer than your projects. Codecademy states that certificates will continue to be accessible after your Pro or Plus membership elapses, that you can access and download your certificate at any time on your My Profile page, and that to save one as a PDF you select View Certificate and then Print. Doing that before you cancel costs nothing.
  • A certificate you have not yet earned is a different matter. Codecademy states that you only receive a certificate if you have completed all of the content in the course or Path, including lessons, projects, quizzes, articles and videos, and that you must have Pro or Plus access at the time of completion to receive it. Cancelling part-way through a certificate-granting Path means finishing it later requires resubscribing.
  • If you are on a free trial, the charge date is fixed and close. Codecademy states that a valid credit or debit card is required for a trial and that accounts are charged after day 7 of the trial, and that if you choose not to upgrade, progress made during the trial is not lost but your quizzes, paths and projects will be unavailable until you upgrade.
  • If you paid with Afterpay there is a second cancellation to make. Codecademy states that if you made your purchase using Afterpay, you also need to cancel on your Afterpay account.

FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE

Cancel Codecademy, step by step.

Cancel a Codecademy subscription in Account Settings

This is the route for an individual Pro or Plus subscription bought from Codecademy. The flow deliberately offers a pause before it offers a cancellation.

  1. Complete verification on your account, which Codecademy names as the first step.
  2. Go to your Account Settings.
  3. Click the Payment and plan tab. Codecademy states that if you do not see this page you are either logged into the wrong account or need to complete account verification by requesting a verification email.
  4. Select I want to end my subscription.
  5. Click No thanks, I still want to cancel.
  6. On a monthly subscription you are offered a pause at this point. If you do not want to pause, scroll down and select No thanks, I'd like to cancel.
  7. Choose a reason for downgrading, scroll down and click Cancel my Subscription.

Codecademy states that your account automatically deactivates itself at the end of your billing cycle, up to which point you still have access to Pro. If you paid using Afterpay, Codecademy states you also need to cancel on your Afterpay account.

Pause a monthly subscription instead

Codecademy offers this as an alternative to cancelling and it is only available on monthly plans, so it is worth checking before you end the subscription outright.

  1. Sign into your account and go to Account Settings.
  2. Navigate to the Payment and plan tab.
  3. Select Pause My Subscription.
  4. Choose to pause for 1, 2 or 3 months.
  5. Watch for the account pause confirmation email that Codecademy states you receive once completed.

Codecademy states that if you pause a monthly subscription you retain access until your next billing date, when the pause goes into effect, that you are not charged for the paused months, and that the subscription resumes automatically after the pause elapses. It states annual subscriptions cannot be paused, and that pause is not available if you paid via PayTM.

Cancel a subscription billed by Apple

Codecademy's iOS app sells subscriptions as in-app purchases, and a subscription bought that way belongs to Apple rather than to Codecademy's own billing.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your name at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Look for the Codecademy entry and select it.
  5. Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.

Check this route only if your receipts come from Apple rather than from Codecademy. Most Codecademy subscriptions are bought on the website and are cancelled in Account Settings instead, where the Payment and plan tab will show the plan. Apple, not Codecademy, handles refunds for an Apple purchase.

Cancel a Codecademy Teams plan

A Teams plan is administered separately from an individual subscription, and Codecademy documents turning off its renewal rather than an instant cancellation.

  1. Confirm you are an admin on the plan, since a member cannot end the organisation's billing.
  2. Open the Teams plan billing settings for your organisation.
  3. Turn off auto renewal for the recurring Teams plan, which Codecademy documents as a distinct action from cancelling an individual subscription.
  4. If you are on a Teams trial, Codecademy publishes a separate cancellation route for the trial.
  5. Confirm the change in writing and note the date the plan expires.

Codecademy states that Teams differs from individual Pro subscriptions, and publishes separate articles for renewing a Teams plan, turning off auto renewal on a recurring Teams plan and cancelling a Teams trial. A learner holding a seat on a Teams plan has no personal billing to cancel.

What happens next?

  • Codecademy states that your account automatically deactivates at the end of your billing cycle, up to which point you still have access to Pro.
  • Codecademy states that when the subscription is deactivated you will no longer have access to Pro or Plus content or classes that you had completed while having a Pro or Plus subscription, and that a cancellation terminates access to completed projects and quizzes, paid features in the app, videos and paths.
  • Lesson progress survives. Codecademy states that all progress will remain saved post-cancellation and that you will be able to pick up where you left off if you return.
  • Certificates survive too. Codecademy states that certificates will continue to be accessible after your Pro or Plus membership elapses, and that they are saved even if you reset the course.
  • Codecademy states it does not grant refunds, prorated or full, for subscriptions, so the end of the billing cycle is the only saving a cancellation produces.

Cancelling a Codecademy free trial.

How do I cancel an App Store free trial before I’m charged?

For a trial billed by Apple, open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Select the trial, choose the cancellation option and confirm. Apple advises cancelling at least 24 hours before the trial ends to prevent renewal. Check the confirmation for your access end date. If you track it in Subex, enter the date the trial converts as the renewal date and set a reminder 1 or 3 days before.

Pausing or freezing Codecademy.

What is the difference between pausing and cancelling Codecademy?

Codecademy draws the line clearly. It states that with pause you choose a period of 1, 2 or 3 months, are not charged for those months, and the subscription resumes automatically once the pause ends. A cancellation, by contrast, terminates your Pro or Plus access to your completed projects and quizzes, paid app features, videos and paths, and restoring that content requires resubscribing. Pause is available on monthly subscriptions only.

WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK

If you get stuck.

I cannot see the Payment and plan tab

Codecademy gives the answer directly: if you do not see this page, you are either logged into the incorrect account or you need to complete account verification first by requesting a verification email. Verification is listed as the first step of its own cancellation instructions, so it is a prerequisite rather than an obstacle. Check the email address on your receipts against the account you are signed into, since a second account is the other common cause.

I cancelled and lost my completed projects and quizzes

That is documented behaviour rather than a fault. Codecademy states that a cancellation terminates your Pro or Plus access to your completed projects and quizzes, paid features in the app, videos and paths, and that you need to resubscribe to restore access to that content. Your underlying progress is not deleted: Codecademy states all progress remains saved and you can pick up where you left off. To keep the work itself, Codecademy recommends pushing projects to GitHub or saving them on your personal computer, which has to be done before access ends.

Codecademy will not refund me

That matches its published policy. Codecademy states that it does not grant refunds, prorated or full, for subscriptions, and that cancelling deactivates the subscription at the end of the current billing cycle with access until then. It does say you may request a refund exception by contacting its customer support team, so a case can be put, but there is no entitlement behind it. Bootcamps and Workshops have their own separate refund policy.

I have an annual plan and there is no pause option

Pause is monthly only. Codecademy states that Pro and Plus monthly subscriptions are the only plan type that can be paused, and that because annual subscriptions are charged annually and you purchase access for a full year, there is no way to pause one. It also states pause is not available if you paid via PayTM. On an annual plan the choices are cancelling, which stops the next year's charge and keeps access until the term ends, or letting it run.

My free trial charged me on day 7

That is the documented schedule. Codecademy states that a valid credit or debit card is required to receive a trial and that accounts are charged after day 7 of the trial. To avoid the charge the cancellation has to happen before that point. Codecademy states that if you choose not to upgrade, progress made during the trial is not lost, but your quizzes, paths and projects will be unavailable until you upgrade, and it recommends saving project work to GitHub or your own computer.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

Does Codecademy give refunds?

No, as published policy. Codecademy states that it does not grant refunds, prorated or full, for subscriptions, and that cancelling deactivates the subscription at the end of your current billing cycle with access until then. It states that a refund exception can be requested by contacting the customer support team, and that Bootcamps and Workshops are covered by a separate refund policy.

Do I keep my Codecademy certificates after cancelling?

Yes. Codecademy states that certificates will continue to be accessible after your Pro or Plus membership elapses, that you can access and download them at any time from your My Profile page, and that they are saved even if you reset the course. To keep a copy, select View Certificate and then Print to save it as a PDF. A certificate you have not finished earning is different: Codecademy states you must have Pro or Plus access at the time of completion to receive one.

What happens to my progress if I cancel?

Codecademy states that all progress will remain saved post-cancellation and that if you return later you will be able to pick up where you left off. What you lose is access to the Pro exclusive content, which it lists as quizzes, projects and similar paid material, until you subscribe again. The account itself is not deleted by cancelling.
