AI TOOLSSubscription cancellation guide

How to cancel Claude Pro subscription.

On the web or the desktop app, click your initials or name in the lower left corner, choose Settings, go to Settings then Billing, and click Cancel. Anthropic states the cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period and that you should cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date to avoid the next charge. If the charge you are chasing comes from the Claude Console instead, cancelling Pro will not stop it: Anthropic states that a paid Claude subscription does not include access to the Claude API or Console, and the two are billed separately.

In this guide

Before you start.

  • Work out which of the three things is charging you. Anthropic states that a paid Claude plan and the Claude Console are separate products, and that a paid subscription does not include API or Console access. A Console organisation buys prepaid credits of its own.
  • Check for usage credits on the subscription itself. Anthropic states that usage credits on a paid plan are charged separately from the subscription and appear as additional charges on your bill, and that they can be disabled in Settings, then Usage.
  • Cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date. Anthropic states this explicitly as the way to avoid being charged for the next billing period.
  • If you subscribed in the iOS or Android app, that store handles the payment. Anthropic states that for an app purchase the subscription and payment are handled directly on the device, and that the payment method and receipts live in your app store account.
  • On a Team plan, only an Owner or Primary Owner can cancel. Anthropic states the cancellation lives in Organization settings, then Billing, and that only Owners and Primary Owners can access it.
  • On a Team plan, remove members before you cancel, not after. Anthropic states that once you cancel, the option to remove members from Organization settings, then Members, is no longer available, and that support has to remove them for you.

FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE

Cancel Claude Pro, step by step.

Cancel Claude Pro or Max on the web or desktop

This is the route for a plan bought at claude.ai or in the Mac, Windows or Linux desktop app. It is also where invoices and the payment method live.

  1. Log in at claude.ai in a browser, or open the desktop app.
  2. Click your initials or name in the lower left corner and select Settings from the menu.
  3. Go to Settings, then Billing.
  4. Click the Cancel button.
  5. Check the Billing page afterwards for the end date, and keep the receipt email, which Anthropic sends with the subject line "Your receipt from Anthropic".

Anthropic states that cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period and that you keep using the paid plan until then. Cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date.

Cancel a subscription bought in Claude for iOS

Anthropic states that an iOS purchase is handled directly on the device, which means Apple took the money and Apple controls the renewal.

  1. Open Claude for iOS and tap your initials in the top right corner.
  2. Tap Billing from the menu options.
  3. Select Manage subscription and follow the prompts for cancellation.
  4. If you have already removed the app, open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, select Claude and tap Cancel Subscription instead.

Anthropic states that only Apple can review and issue a refund for an App Store charge, and that its own support team cannot access or refund those charges.

Cancel a subscription bought in Claude for Android

Google Play took the payment for an Android purchase, so the renewal is stopped there.

  1. Open Claude for Android and tap your initials in the top right corner.
  2. Tap Billing from the menu options.
  3. Select Manage subscription and follow the prompts for cancellation.
  4. If the app is gone from the device, open the Play Store, tap your profile icon, then Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions, select Claude and tap Cancel subscription.

For an Android refund, Anthropic asks for the email address on the Google Play account or the GPA order number from the Play receipt, in the format GPA.xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxx.

Stop Claude Console API charges

This is the charge people miss. The Console is a developer account with its own prepaid credit balance, and cancelling Pro or Max does nothing to it.

  1. Log in to the Claude Console with an Admin or Billing role.
  2. Navigate to Settings, then Billing, where the credit balance and usage are shown.
  3. Open the Auto-reload section, click Edit, and toggle auto-reload off so no further credits are bought automatically.
  4. Revoke API keys that are still in use, since a running integration is what spends the balance.
  5. Check the Invoice history on the same page if you are reconciling old charges.

Anthropic states that purchased credits expire one year from the purchase date, that the expiration date cannot be extended, and that all credit purchases are non-refundable. An organisation on monthly invoicing is billed in arrears instead, so stopping the usage is what stops the bill.

Cancel a Team plan

A Team plan is billed per seat to the organisation, so an ordinary member cannot end it. Leaving the organisation does not reduce anyone's bill.

  1. Sign in with an Owner or Primary Owner account: Anthropic states that only those roles can access the billing page.
  2. Navigate to Organization settings, then Billing.
  3. Cancel the Team plan subscription there.
  4. If you only want fewer seats rather than no plan, use Organization settings, then Organization and access, then Manage under Total seats, and reduce the count instead.

Anthropic states that reducing the seat count takes effect at the next renewal, on the annual renewal date for annual plans, with no prorated refund at the time you submit the change. It also states that after a Team cancellation the option to remove members disappears, and that support has to remove them for you.

What happens next?

  • Access runs to the end of the period you paid for. Anthropic states that the cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period and that you can continue using the paid plan until then. The same applies to a Team plan for the whole organisation.
  • Your conversations belong to the account, not to the plan. Cancelling drops you to the free tier with its smaller usage limits rather than removing your chats, and deleting the account is a separate action.
  • Usage credits are not covered by the subscription cancellation. Anthropic states they are charged separately and appear as additional charges, so disable them in Settings, then Usage, if you had them enabled.
  • Anthropic states that except as expressly provided in its Consumer Terms of Service or where required by law, all payments are non-refundable. In the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom it states you may receive a refund within 14 days of purchase, prorated according to your use.

WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK

If you get stuck.

I cancelled Claude Pro and Anthropic is still charging me

Check whether the charge is the subscription at all. Anthropic states that the Claude Console is a separate product with its own prepaid credits, and that a paid plan does not include API or Console access. A Console organisation with auto-reload turned on keeps buying credits on its own schedule. Usage credits on the plan itself are also billed separately and appear as additional charges. Turn off auto-reload in the Console and disable usage credits in Settings, then Usage.

I paid but my account shows as free

Anthropic names two causes. Either you are logged in with a different email, in which case try the alternative addresses you may have used, or the payment method failed and the account was downgraded, which shows in Settings, then Billing, as the recent payment status.

There is no Cancel button in my billing settings

That usually means the web page is not where you are billed. Anthropic states that an iOS or Android purchase is handled directly on the device and managed through the app store account, so the cancel control lives in the app's Billing menu or in the store. On a Team plan it means you are not an Owner: Anthropic states that only Owners and Primary Owners can reach Organization settings, then Billing.

I removed a colleague from the Team plan and the bill did not change

Anthropic states it plainly: removing members does not generate a credit or refund, the seat simply becomes available to assign to someone else. Reducing the seat count is a separate action an Owner takes under Organization and access, and Anthropic states that it takes effect at the next renewal, on the annual renewal date for annual plans, with no prorated refund when you submit it. Adding seats works the other way and is charged prorated immediately.

I cannot sign in to the account that is being charged

Anthropic's documented route is to contact support from another email address and copy in the address tied to the account you cannot reach, then ask in writing to cancel the paid plan and request a refund. It also states that support cannot process a refund while a bank dispute is pending, because the disputed funds are pulled back immediately.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

How do I cancel Claude Pro?

Click your initials or name in the lower left corner, select Settings, go to Settings then Billing, and click Cancel. Anthropic advises cancelling at least 24 hours before the next billing date, and access continues to the end of the current period.

Does cancelling Claude Pro stop my Anthropic API bill?

No. Anthropic states that paid Claude plans and the Claude Console are separate products and that a subscription does not include API or Console access. Stop the API side in the Console under Settings, then Billing: turn off auto-reload and revoke the keys still in use.

Can I get a refund for Claude Pro?

Anthropic states that except as expressly provided in its Consumer Terms of Service or where required by law, all payments are non-refundable. In the EEA and the UK it states a refund may be available within 14 days of purchase, prorated according to use. An App Store charge is Apple's decision alone.

What happens to my chats and projects after I cancel?

They stay with the account. Cancelling moves you to the free tier and its lower usage limits rather than deleting your history, and deleting the account is a separate action in your settings.

Do unused API credits come back if I stop using the Console?

No. Anthropic states that purchased credits expire one year from the purchase date, that the expiry cannot be extended, and that all credit purchases are non-refundable.
