In this guide
Before you start.
- Find your renewal date and count back five business days. Docusign states that a subscription plan renews automatically unless you cancel or terminate at least five business days before the end of the current term. That is business days, not calendar days, so a holiday weekend moves the real deadline earlier.
- Docusign states that for a subscription plan longer than a month you receive advance notice of renewal no less than thirty calendar days before the end of the subscription term. Search your inbox for that notice: it is the clearest statement of your actual renewal date.
- Know the refund position before you decide. Docusign states that payments are non-refundable except as expressly provided in its terms, as otherwise agreed by the parties, or as required by applicable law.
- There is one documented exception worth knowing. Docusign states that if a customer terminates its annual subscription plan within the first thirty days of the initial subscription term, it may submit a written request for a refund of the fees paid for the initial term, which Docusign will consider, without obligation, in good faith. It also states it has no obligation to consider a request outside those thirty days, or where records indicate substantial productive use took place.
- A cancellation is not finished when you click. Docusign states you must receive a confirmation from Docusign on your request for cancellation in order for cancellation to take effect, so keep the email.
- If you are on a free trial, export anything you want to keep first. Docusign states that any data a customer enters during the free trial, and any configurations made, will be permanently lost at the end of the trial period unless the customer buys an equivalent or greater subscription plan or exports the data before the trial ends.
- If a reseller or a Docusign sales team set your account up under an order form, the self-service cancellation path may not apply to you: those agreements run on their own order form terms and go through your account contact.
- Docusign states that a promotional code applies only to your initial subscription term unless stated otherwise, and that each renewal term is charged at the original, non-discounted price. A renewal that looks like a price rise is often this.
FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE
Cancel Docusign, step by step.
Cancel a plan bought from Docusign
This is the route for a self-service plan bought at docusign.com. The controls sit in the account administration area, and you need an account administrator to reach them.
- Sign in at account.docusign.com with the administrator account that owns the billing, not a signer account added to it.
- Open the account administration area and find the plan and billing section for your subscription.
- Look for the option to turn off automatic renewal: Docusign's terms name setting your account not to auto-renew through the administrative console as one of the ways to prevent renewal.
- If you want the plan to end rather than just not renew, submit a cancellation request through Docusign support.
- Do it at least five business days before the end of your current term.
- Wait for the confirmation from Docusign and keep it: the terms state cancellation does not take effect without it.
Docusign states you may terminate your account at any time upon ten days' advance written notice, provided as instructed on its website or by contacting support. Turning off auto-renewal and requesting termination are not the same thing, so be clear which you want.
Cancel through Docusign support
Use this when the option is not in your console, when the plan was sold by a sales team, or when you need the confirmation the terms require.
- Open the Docusign Support Center and start a case or a chat with the account administrator's details to hand.
- State clearly that you want the subscription plan cancelled and not renewed, and give the account ID and the plan name.
- Ask for written confirmation of the cancellation and the date it takes effect.
- If you are inside the first thirty days of an annual term, submit the refund request in writing at the same time.
- Keep the case number and the confirmation email.
Docusign states that if you wish to terminate you must provide notice as it instructs on its website or by contacting it through support, and that you must receive a confirmation for the cancellation to take effect.
A subscription bought through an app store
Docusign's terms contemplate purchases made through an intermediary such as an app store, and in that case the store controls the renewal.
- Check the receipt: an Apple or Google Play receipt means the store took the payment, not Docusign.
- On an Apple device, open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, select Docusign and cancel there.
- On Android, open the Play Store, tap your profile icon, then Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions, select Docusign and cancel.
- Check the subscription shows as cancelled with an end date in the store's list.
Docusign states that if your subscription plan is purchased through an app store, the app store automatically charges your app store account for the cost of the plan including renewal fees, and that you must use the tools made available by those services to manage or terminate the plan.
What happens next?
- Access runs to the end of the term you paid for rather than stopping on the day you cancel. Docusign bills prepaid subscription plans in advance, so the period is already paid.
- Docusign states that on expiry or termination the licences and use rights granted to you terminate and its obligation to provide further access ends. Download completed envelopes and documents you need before that date rather than after.
- The renewal is what you are stopping. Docusign states the authorisation to charge your payment method continues through the original term and any renewal term until you cancel the plan or it is otherwise terminated, and that you remain liable for any amounts payable.
- Docusign states that payments are non-refundable except as expressly provided in its terms, agreed by the parties, or required by law, with the first thirty days of an initial annual term as the one discretionary exception it documents.
- Consumers in some jurisdictions have stronger rights. Docusign documents a fourteen day right of withdrawal for consumers in parts of Europe, states it will refund within fourteen days of a cancellation notice under that right, and documents a seven day termination window for customers domiciled in Brazil. It also states that under the right of withdrawal, once the contract has been fully performed the right to cancel is lost.
- Docusign states that if it changes the fees or features of your plan it gives at least thirty days' advance notice, and that you may terminate your plan as its termination section describes if you do not want to continue on the new terms.
WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK
If you get stuck.
I cancelled and Docusign renewed me anyway
Two documented causes. The deadline is five business days before the end of the term, not the renewal date itself, so a cancellation in the final week can miss it. And Docusign states that you must receive a confirmation from Docusign on your request for cancellation in order for cancellation to take effect: a request that never produced a confirmation did not cancel anything. Check your inbox for the confirmation, and for the renewal notice Docusign states it sends at least thirty days before the end of a term longer than a month.
My renewal cost much more than I paid last year
Usually the promotional price expiring rather than a price rise. Docusign states that a promotional code may only be used for your initial subscription term unless expressly indicated otherwise, and that if you bought your initial plan with a promotional code, each renewal term is charged at the original, non-discounted price. Docusign also states it gives at least thirty days' notice before changing fees.
There is no cancel option anywhere in my account
Two likely reasons. You are signed in as a user rather than an account administrator, and only the administrator reaches plan and billing settings. Or the plan was sold under an order form by a Docusign sales team or a reseller, in which case the self-service controls do not apply and cancellation runs through your account contact or support. Docusign's terms name the administrative console option as available only where that capability exists.
I want the annual fee back after cancelling
Docusign states that payments are non-refundable except as its terms provide, as agreed by the parties, or as required by law. The one path it documents is for an annual plan terminated within the first thirty days of the initial subscription term: a written request that Docusign will consider, without obligation, in good faith. It states it has no obligation to consider requests outside that window, or where records indicate substantial productive use took place during the period.
My trial ended and my documents and settings are gone
Docusign states this outright: any data a customer enters into the services, and any configurations made, during the free trial will be permanently lost at the end of the trial period unless the customer purchases an equivalent or greater subscription plan, or exports the data before the trial ends. There is no recovery path after the fact, so export during the trial.
Still not cancelled?Common reasons a subscription will not cancel
GOOD TO KNOW
Questions, answered.
How do I cancel my Docusign subscription?
Sign in as an account administrator, use the plan and billing area to turn off automatic renewal, or contact Docusign support to request cancellation. Do it at least five business days before the end of your current term, and keep the confirmation: Docusign states cancellation does not take effect without one.
Does Docusign refund an unused subscription?
Rarely. Docusign states payments are non-refundable except as expressly provided in its terms, agreed by the parties, or required by law. The documented exception is an annual plan terminated within the first thirty days of the initial term, where a written refund request will be considered without obligation.
When does a Docusign cancellation take effect?
At the end of the term you have already paid for, and only once Docusign has confirmed it. Docusign also states you may terminate your account at any time upon ten days' advance written notice.
Why did Docusign renew my plan without asking?
Because renewal is automatic by design. Docusign states a plan renews for the same period unless you cancel, terminate, or set the account not to auto-renew at least five business days before the end of the current term. For plans longer than a month it states it sends a renewal notice no less than thirty calendar days beforehand.
What happens to my signed documents after I cancel?
Docusign states that on expiry or termination your licences and use rights terminate and its obligation to provide further access ends. Download the completed envelopes and certificates of completion you need before the term runs out.
