SOFTWARE & PRODUCTIVITYSubscription cancellation guide

How to cancel JetBrains subscription.

Cancel the recurring payment in your JetBrains Account at account.jetbrains.com, under Licenses, before the next payment date. JetBrains states you can cancel recurring payments at any time via your account prior to the next recurring payment due date, and that if you cancel after this time the cancellation will not take effect until the following recurring payment due date, with no refund or partial refund issued. Before you cancel an annual subscription, check what you are giving up: JetBrains states that after 12 consecutive months of paid subscription you keep a perpetual fallback licence for the version that was current 12 months before your subscription expires, so cancelling a month early can cost you a permanent licence. And JetBrains AI is a separate subscription: cancelling an IDE subscription does not stop it.

Before you start.

  • Find your next payment date and act before it. JetBrains states you can cancel recurring payments at any time via your account prior to the next recurring payment due date, and that a cancellation after that point does not take effect until the following due date with no refund or partial refund.
  • Check how long you have paid. JetBrains states the perpetual fallback licence requires you not to be in breach and to have paid the applicable subscription fees for the preceding 12 months in full and without interruption. Cancelling at month 11 forfeits it.
  • Understand what the fallback licence actually gives you. JetBrains states the fallback version is the most recent product version made available for public purchase prior to the fallback date, which is 12 months before expiry, and that your rights continue on a perpetual, royalty-free, non-exclusive and non-transferable basis for continued use of that version.
  • JetBrains AI is billed separately from the IDE. If you took an AI Pro trial or subscription, it has its own entry in your account and cancelling an All Products Pack or an individual IDE will not stop it.
  • Note the refund position. JetBrains states that an individual consumer has the right to withdraw from the purchase contract within 14 days without giving any reason, and that it will reimburse all payments received not later than 14 days from the day it is informed of the decision to withdraw. For everyone else it states a refund request after the purchase date is subject to prior authorisation by JetBrains and acceptance is at its sole discretion.
  • If your employer bought the licence, you cannot cancel it. A commercial or organisation licence is assigned to you by a licence administrator, and only that administrator can remove it or stop the renewal.
  • JetBrains states that no credits or refunds will be issued for prepaid subscription fees except as specified in its Terms of Purchase, with an exception if JetBrains discontinues a product, where it refunds the unused portion.
  • JetBrains bills through its own store rather than an app store, so the subscription will never appear in your Apple or Google Play subscriptions list.

FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE

Cancel JetBrains, step by step.

Cancel the recurring payment in your JetBrains Account

This is the route for an individual subscription bought with a card. It stops the renewal rather than ending your access today.

  1. Sign in at account.jetbrains.com with the JetBrains Account that holds the licence.
  2. Open the Licenses section.
  3. Find the subscription you want to stop, including any separate JetBrains AI subscription.
  4. Cancel the recurring payment or switch auto-renewal off for that subscription.
  5. Do this before the next payment date: JetBrains states a later cancellation does not take effect until the following due date.
  6. Check the licence page afterwards shows the subscription as ending, with the expiry date.

JetBrains states that by purchasing a product, service or plugin requiring regular payments you authorise JetBrains to charge your payment card automatically at the interval and in the amount you selected, and that you can cancel recurring payments at any time via your account prior to the next due date.

Cancel JetBrains AI separately

This is the charge people miss. JetBrains AI is its own subscription with its own trial, and an IDE cancellation does not touch it.

  1. Sign in at account.jetbrains.com and open the Licenses section.
  2. Look for the JetBrains AI entry alongside your IDE or All Products Pack subscription.
  3. Cancel the recurring payment on that entry specifically.
  4. If you are on an AI trial, do it before the trial converts, since the same before-the-due-date rule applies.
  5. Check both entries afterwards: stopping one does not stop the other.

Treat the IDE subscription and the AI subscription as two separate bills against the same account. Cancelling an All Products Pack leaves an AI subscription running.

Time the cancellation to keep the fallback licence

Worth a moment's arithmetic before you cancel. This is the feature that makes a JetBrains subscription different from most, and it is easy to lose by cancelling early.

  1. Check the start date of your uninterrupted paid subscription in your JetBrains Account.
  2. Confirm you have paid the subscription fees for the preceding 12 months in full and without interruption, which is the condition JetBrains states.
  3. If you are short of 12 months, work out whether paying to the anniversary is worth the perpetual licence it secures.
  4. Cancel the recurring payment once you are past the 12 month mark, before the next payment date.
  5. After expiry, keep using the fallback version: JetBrains states this is the most recent product version made available for public purchase prior to the fallback date, 12 months before expiry.

JetBrains states the fallback rights continue on a perpetual, royalty-free, non-exclusive and non-transferable basis. It does not include updates: you keep that specific version rather than future ones.

A licence your employer or organisation bought

If a company pays, the developer using the licence is not the customer and has no cancellation control.

  1. Check whether your licence was assigned to you rather than bought by you: an assigned licence shows in your JetBrains Account without a payment method you control.
  2. Contact the licence administrator in your organisation, who manages assignment and renewal.
  3. Ask them to revoke the licence assignment or to stop the renewal, depending on what you need.
  4. If you also hold a personal subscription, check it separately, because the two are different licences on the same account.

What happens next?

  • Access runs to the end of the period you paid for. JetBrains states the subscription and the agreement automatically renew for a successive subscription period unless terminated, and cancelling the recurring payment is what stops the renewal.
  • The perpetual fallback licence is what you keep afterwards, provided you qualified. JetBrains states it requires paid subscription fees for the preceding 12 months in full and without interruption, and gives you continued use of the fallback version on a perpetual basis.
  • The fallback version is not the latest version. JetBrains states it is the most recent product version made available for public purchase prior to the fallback date, which is 12 months before expiry.
  • Your projects and settings are local files and are unaffected by the licence ending. What stops is the licence to run the newer builds.
  • JetBrains states that no credits or refunds will be issued for prepaid subscription fees except as specified in its Terms of Purchase, and that if it discontinues a product or terminates for legal reasons you receive a refund of the unused portion of prepaid fees.
  • For an individual consumer, JetBrains states there is a 14 day right of withdrawal without giving any reason, with reimbursement not later than 14 days from the day JetBrains is informed of the decision.
  • For other customers, JetBrains states any refund request following the purchase date is subject to prior authorisation and acceptance at its sole discretion.

Cancelling a JetBrains free trial.

How do I cancel a JetBrains AI Pro trial?

In the same place but as a separate entry. Open Licenses at account.jetbrains.com, find the JetBrains AI subscription and cancel its recurring payment before the trial converts. Cancelling an IDE or All Products Pack subscription does not stop it.

WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK

If you get stuck.

I cancelled and JetBrains charged me anyway

Check the timing against the payment date. JetBrains states you can cancel recurring payments at any time prior to the next recurring payment due date, and that if you cancel after this time the cancellation will not take effect until the following recurring payment due date, with no refund or partial refund issued. A cancellation on or after the due date therefore leaves one more period charged by design.

I cancelled my IDE subscription but JetBrains is still billing me

Almost always a second subscription on the same account. JetBrains AI is billed separately from an IDE or All Products Pack subscription, and a trial that converted keeps running after you cancel the IDE. Open the Licenses section at account.jetbrains.com and check every entry, cancelling the recurring payment on each one you do not want.

I lost my perpetual fallback licence

The condition is stricter than most people remember. JetBrains states the fallback licence requires you to have paid the applicable subscription fees for the preceding 12 months in full and without interruption. A failed payment that created a gap, or a cancellation before the twelve month anniversary, breaks the requirement. There is no partial version of the entitlement.

My IDE will not open after the subscription ended

Check which version you are running against the fallback version you are entitled to. JetBrains states the fallback version is the most recent product version made available for public purchase prior to the fallback date, 12 months before expiry, so a build released in your final subscription year is newer than what the fallback covers. Install the older qualifying version and activate it with your JetBrains Account.

There is no cancel option on my licence

It is not your licence to cancel. A commercial or organisation licence is assigned to you by a licence administrator, who holds the payment relationship with JetBrains, so the recurring payment controls do not appear on your account. Ask the administrator to revoke the assignment or stop the renewal.

JetBrains refused my refund

That matches its stated policy for most customers. JetBrains states any refund request following the purchase date is subject to prior authorisation and that acceptance is at its sole discretion, and that no credits or refunds are issued for prepaid subscription fees except as its Terms of Purchase specify. The exception is an individual consumer inside the 14 day withdrawal window, where the right applies without giving a reason.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

How do I cancel my JetBrains subscription?

Sign in at account.jetbrains.com, open the Licenses section, and cancel the recurring payment on the subscription. JetBrains states you must do this prior to the next recurring payment due date, or the cancellation does not take effect until the following one.

Do I keep my JetBrains IDE after cancelling?

If you qualified for the perpetual fallback licence, yes, in a specific version. JetBrains states it requires paid subscription fees for the preceding 12 months in full and without interruption, and gives perpetual use of the version that was current 12 months before your subscription expires.

Can I get a refund from JetBrains?

JetBrains states that an individual consumer has a 14 day right of withdrawal without giving any reason, reimbursed within 14 days of being informed. For other customers it states a refund request after the purchase date is subject to prior authorisation and acceptance at its sole discretion.

Can I cancel a JetBrains licence my company pays for?

No. An organisation licence is assigned by a licence administrator who holds the billing relationship, so the cancellation controls do not appear on your account. Contact that administrator to have the assignment revoked or the renewal stopped.
