SOFTWARE & PRODUCTIVITYSubscription cancellation guide

How to cancel Squarespace subscription.

Open the Billing panel for the site, click the subscription under Subscriptions, then Cancel subscription, and work through the reason and confirmation screens. The timing matters more than the clicks: Squarespace states that cancelling an annual subscription ends your service immediately and takes your site offline, while a monthly subscription runs to the end of the billing cycle. Your domain is a separate subscription and Squarespace states it will not automatically expire and will continue to auto-renew after the website is cancelled.

Before you start.

  • Decide when to cancel an annual plan, because it does not run out the term. Squarespace states that cancelling an annual subscription ends your service immediately and takes your site offline. If you want the months you paid for, wait and cancel near the renewal date.
  • Know the refund rules before you click, because they are narrower than most people expect. Squarespace states you can request a full refund for annual website subscriptions cancelled within 14 days of purchase, and that there are no refunds for annual plans cancelled after 14 days, for monthly plans at all, or for renewal payments.
  • Refunds are not automatic. Squarespace states that to request one you contact it by completing a refund request form, that it aims to respond in two business days, and that refunds take 3 to 10 business days to appear on a card statement.
  • List everything in the account, because Squarespace states that all subscriptions are billed individually, are set to auto-renew, and must each be cancelled individually. Domains, Google Workspace, Acuity Scheduling and Email Campaigns keep billing after the website subscription ends.
  • Treat the domain as a separate commitment. Squarespace states that a domain registered through it will not automatically expire when you cancel the website subscription, that it stays yours, and that it will continue to auto-renew.
  • The domain refund window is shorter than the website one. Squarespace states it automatically issues a full refund for Squarespace domains cancelled within five days of registration, and that ccTLDs such as .eu, .ca and .co.uk have no cancellation grace period.
  • Watch for the free domain clause. Squarespace states that if you cancel an annual plan within 14 days, the cost of the domain is deducted from your refund, and that free domains registered after 5 March 2015 renew at 20 dollars annually after the first year.
  • A plan bought in the iOS app is different. Squarespace states that Mobile Start plans are purchased through the Squarespace app and managed by Apple, and that a refund for that plan is requested from Apple.

FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE

Cancel Squarespace, step by step.

Cancel a website subscription

This is the main route and it is the only one that stops the website plan. Squarespace bills web subscriptions directly.

  1. Open the Billing panel of the site you want to cancel.
  2. Under Subscriptions, click the subscription or plan.
  3. Click Cancel subscription and read the Cancellation details.
  4. Choose Retain Access to cancel at the end of the billing cycle, or Get Refund Immediately to end the service now with a refund if you are inside the window, then click Continue.
  5. Select your reason from the drop-down and click Next.
  6. Complete the feedback form, or click Next to skip it.
  7. If you hold other subscriptions, the Your other subscriptions panel appears: review it and click Continue.
  8. Click Cancel subscription to confirm.

Squarespace states that cancelling an annual subscription ends your service immediately and takes your site offline, while a monthly subscription stops at the end of the billing cycle. That difference is worth reading twice before confirming an annual cancellation.

Cancel a Squarespace domain

A domain is a separate registration with its own renewal date and its own rules. Squarespace states it keeps auto-renewing after the website subscription ends.

  1. Open the domains dashboard and click the domain.
  2. Click Cancel Domain, then Confirm, then Cancel, then Cancel again to work through the confirmations.
  3. If the Cancel Domain option is not there, use the Auto-renew toggle instead: Squarespace states the option is unavailable past the five day window, for ccTLDs, and for resold domains.
  4. Note the expiry date: the registration stays active until then and lapses afterwards.
  5. If you want to keep the name, transfer it to another registrar rather than cancelling it.

Squarespace states it automatically issues a full refund for Squarespace domains cancelled within five days of registration, measured to the minute, and that domain renewals are never refundable. A transferred-in domain has no five day window at all.

Cancel a Squarespace trial

The trial is separate from a paid subscription and sits in its own section of the Billing panel. Squarespace states the trial runs 14 days and needs no credit card.

  1. Open the Billing panel.
  2. Under Trial subscriptions, click Website.
  3. Click Cancel trial.
  4. Pick a reason, or click Skip.
  5. Click Cancel trial to confirm.
  6. Alternatively, delete the site from the dashboard: the three dots on the site, then Delete, then Delete.

Squarespace states that if you buy a website plan as part of a package with your domain, there is no trial period for that site and the purchased plan starts immediately. A trial can be extended by 7 days, and Squarespace sends an expiry email the day before.

A Mobile Start plan bought in the app

This is the one Squarespace product Apple bills, and it behaves differently from everything else in the account.

  1. Check whether your plan is Mobile Start: Squarespace states these are purchased through the Squarespace app and managed by Apple.
  2. Squarespace states Mobile Start lasts 30 days and does not auto-renew, so there is nothing recurring to stop.
  3. For a refund on that plan, Squarespace states you contact Apple rather than Squarespace.
  4. A standard website plan bought on the web is never billed by Apple, so if you have one of those, use the website route above.

What happens next?

  • Squarespace states that a Website expired message appears when you visit the site from any of your domains, and that after the subscription ends the site becomes private and search engines stop indexing your content.
  • Squarespace states that any products or customer subscriptions on your store page will be cancelled.
  • You keep partial access. Squarespace states you retain login access to Contacts, Products and Services including issuing refunds and viewing orders, Billing, Domains and Email, import and export of content, and Permissions and Ownership.
  • The content survives. Squarespace states the data is preserved and you can reactivate at any time, but that you cannot reactivate a legacy pricing plan and would have to move to a current one.
  • Other subscriptions keep billing. Squarespace names Domains, Google Workspace, Acuity Scheduling and Email Campaigns as continuing, and states Digital Products pauses for 30 days.
  • Squarespace states that active gift card balances do not expire but cannot be refunded or transferred, so deal with them before cancelling the site.
  • Squarespace states that website subscriptions cannot be moved between sites, so cancelling one does not free up a plan to use elsewhere.

WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK

If you get stuck.

I cancelled my annual plan and the site went down straight away

That is documented behaviour rather than a fault. Squarespace states that cancelling an annual subscription ends your service immediately and takes your site offline, and that only a monthly subscription runs to the end of the billing cycle. If you are not inside the 14 day refund window, cancelling early on an annual plan loses the remaining months without returning the money, so the better move is to wait until close to renewal.

I cancelled my site but I am still being charged

Squarespace states that all subscriptions are billed individually and set to auto-renew, and that each one must be cancelled individually. The usual culprit is the domain: Squarespace states a domain registered through it does not automatically expire with the website and continues to auto-renew. Google Workspace, Acuity Scheduling and Email Campaigns behave the same way. Open the Billing panel and work through every entry under Subscriptions.

I want a refund on a monthly plan

Squarespace does not offer one. Its refund policy states there are no refunds for monthly plans at all, alongside no refunds for annual plans cancelled after 14 days and none for renewal payments. The 14 day window applies only to annual website subscriptions, counted from the purchase. Getty Images, Email Campaigns on all plans, and monthly Essential Email by Titan are named as non-refundable outright.

There is no Cancel Domain option on my domain

Squarespace states the option is unavailable past the five day registration window, for ccTLDs such as .eu, .ca and .co.uk which have no cancellation grace period, and for resold domains. In those cases it directs you to the Auto-renew toggle instead, which stops the next charge and lets the registration lapse at its expiry date.

My renewal arrived with no warning

Squarespace sends a reminder only on some plans. It states that it emails a reminder 15 days before an annual subscription renews, and that monthly subscriptions renew automatically without an email reminder. SEPA users are told a reminder arrives when the payment is processed rather than before it. A monthly plan therefore gives no notice at all, and it is also the plan that cannot be refunded.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

How do I cancel my Squarespace website?

Open the Billing panel for that site, click the subscription under Subscriptions, click Cancel subscription, choose Retain Access or Get Refund Immediately, then select a reason and confirm with Cancel subscription. Squarespace states an annual plan ends immediately and takes the site offline, while a monthly plan runs to the end of the cycle.

Does cancelling Squarespace cancel my domain?

No. Squarespace states that a domain registered through it will not automatically expire when you cancel your website subscription, that it stays yours, and that it will continue to auto-renew. The domain has to be cancelled separately, or its auto-renew toggle switched off.

Can I get a refund from Squarespace?

Only in a narrow case. Squarespace states you can request a full refund for annual website subscriptions cancelled within 14 days of purchase, and that annual plans cancelled after 14 days, all monthly plans and all renewal payments are not refundable. Refunds are requested through a form rather than issued automatically.

What is the Squarespace domain refund window?

Squarespace states it automatically issues a full refund for Squarespace domains cancelled within five days of registration, measured to the minute. It states ccTLDs have no cancellation grace period, that transferred-in domains have no window, and that domain renewals are never refundable.

What happens to my Squarespace site after cancelling?

Squarespace states a Website expired message appears on your domains, the site becomes private and search engines stop indexing it, and store products and customer subscriptions are cancelled. The content is preserved and the site can be reactivated, though Squarespace states a legacy pricing plan cannot be reactivated.
