LEARNINGSubscription cancellation guide

How to cancel Lingokids subscription.

The parent who bought the subscription has to cancel it, and the first job is working out which of four channels took the money. Lingokids says to check the wording on the charge: Apple or iTunes Bill means the App Store, Google Lingokids means Google Play, Lingokids or Monkimun means you paid on the Lingokids website, and Amazon means the Amazon Appstore. Each is cancelled in a different place and Lingokids cannot stop an Apple or Amazon charge for you. Refunds are tied to the first payment rather than the latest one: Lingokids asks monthly subscribers to contact support within seven days of their first payment and yearly subscribers within 30 days. Cancelling drops the family to free Basic access, which Lingokids describes as 10 activities a day with no time limit and no payment details needed.

Before you start.

  • Identify the billing channel from the charge itself, which is the method Lingokids publishes. It states that a charge reading Apple or iTunes Bill is an App Store subscription, Google Lingokids is Google Play, Lingokids or Monkimun is a purchase made on the Lingokids website, and Amazon is the Amazon Appstore. Four channels means four different cancellation routes.
  • If you want a refund as well as a cancellation, note that the clock runs from your first payment, not the one that just arrived. Lingokids asks monthly subscribers to contact support within seven days of their first payment and yearly subscribers within 30 days of their first payment, and states that past that it cannot refund the payment but will help you cancel so nothing renews.
  • Cancelling and refunding are separate requests. Lingokids states that cancelling stops future payments but does not refund one that has already gone through, so a refund has to be asked for separately.
  • Deleting the app achieves nothing. Lingokids states that deleting the Lingokids app does not cancel anything and that you need to cancel through the platform you subscribed with, or the payments carry on.
  • If you are on the free trial, the trial end date is the deadline. Lingokids states that Lingokids Plus starts with a 7-day free trial, that a free trial turns into a paid subscription automatically when it ends, and that cancelling before the trial is up means you will not be charged.
  • This is a family purchase, so the account that pays is the account that cancels. The subscription belongs to the parent who set it up, and a child profile cannot end it. If another parent or family member made the purchase, the cancellation has to happen from their store account or their Lingokids login.

FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE

Cancel Lingokids, step by step.

Cancel a Lingokids subscription billed by Apple

This is the route when the charge reads Apple or iTunes Bill. Lingokids states that Apple's privacy rules mean it cannot manage App Store subscriptions on your behalf.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your name at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Select Lingokids, scrolling down if you do not see it immediately.
  5. Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.

Apple handles refunds for these purchases as well as the cancellation, so a refund request goes to Apple rather than to Lingokids. Lingokids states it cannot manage App Store subscriptions on your behalf.

Cancel a Lingokids subscription billed by Google Play

This is the route when the charge reads Google Lingokids. The cancellation happens in Google Play, but refunds work differently here than on Apple.

  1. Open the Google Play Store app with the Google Account that bought the subscription.
  2. Tap your profile icon in the top right.
  3. Select Payments & Subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
  4. Select Lingokids.
  5. Tap Cancel subscription and confirm.

Unusually, Lingokids reviews Google Play refund requests itself rather than sending you to Google, so a refund for a Google Play purchase is asked for through Lingokids support. The seven day and 30 day windows from the first payment still apply.

Cancel a subscription bought from Lingokids

This is the route when the charge reads Lingokids or Monkimun, meaning you subscribed on the Lingokids website with a card or PayPal. The cancellation itself happens inside the app rather than on the website.

  1. Open the Lingokids app and go to the Parents Area.
  2. Tap the Profile icon.
  3. Open Account.
  4. Select Cancel my subscription and confirm.

Lingokids reviews refunds for these purchases itself. It asks for the last four digits of the card or the PayPal email address you paid with so it can find the account, and states that an approved refund usually lands back in your account within five to 10 business days.

Cancel a Lingokids subscription billed by Amazon

Lingokids supports the Amazon Appstore, which matters for families using a Fire tablet. This is the route when the charge reads Amazon, and it is the one most people do not think to check.

  1. Go to amazon.com and open Accounts & Lists, then Your Account.
  2. Open Digital content and devices, then Content and devices.
  3. Open the Apps tab and find Lingokids.
  4. Click the three dots, then Manage subscription.
  5. Select Cancel Subscription and confirm.

Amazon handles refunds for these purchases as well as the cancellation, in the same way Apple does for App Store purchases. Lingokids does not review them.

What happens next?

  • Lingokids states that after the subscription ends the family moves to free Basic access, so children can carry on playing every day.
  • Lingokids describes Basic as free, needing no payment details at all, with no time limit, and giving 10 activities a day that refresh daily. It states Lingokids is ad-free throughout, so the free tier is not an advertising-supported downgrade.
  • What Plus adds and Basic loses is the whole library, offline play, up to four child profiles and the full Progress Center reports.
  • Cancelling does not return money already taken. Lingokids states that cancelling stops future payments but does not refund one that has already gone through.
  • An approved refund takes time to appear. Lingokids states the money usually lands back in your account within five to 10 business days.

WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK

If you get stuck.

I cancelled in the app but the charges keep coming

Almost certainly the cancellation happened in the wrong place. Lingokids runs four separate billing channels and only one of them, a purchase made on the Lingokids website, is cancelled inside the app under Parents Area, Profile, Account. An App Store, Google Play or Amazon Appstore subscription lives in that store's account and keeps renewing regardless of what you do inside Lingokids. Check the wording on the charge: Apple or iTunes Bill, Google Lingokids, Lingokids or Monkimun, or Amazon each point to a different place.

I deleted the app to stop the subscription

That does not work, and Lingokids says so directly: deleting the Lingokids app does not cancel anything, and you need to cancel through the platform you subscribed with or the payments carry on. The subscription is held by the store or by Lingokids, not by the installed app. Reinstalling is only necessary if the app is where your particular cancellation route lives, which is the case only for a purchase made on the Lingokids website.

I asked for a refund and was told I was too late

The windows run from the first payment rather than the most recent one, which is what catches people out on a yearly plan that renewed. Lingokids asks monthly subscribers to contact support within seven days of their first payment and yearly subscribers within 30 days of their first payment, and states that beyond that it cannot refund the payment but will help you cancel so nothing renews. It also describes refunds as looked at case by case rather than automatic.

Lingokids says it cannot refund my App Store payment

That is correct and it is Apple's rule rather than a refusal. Lingokids states that Apple's privacy rules mean it cannot manage App Store subscriptions on your behalf, and Apple handles refunds for those purchases. Amazon Appstore purchases work the same way, with Amazon handling the refund. The two channels where Lingokids reviews refunds itself are Google Play and purchases made on the Lingokids website, which is the opposite of what most services do.

I bought an Unlimited membership, is that a one-off purchase?

No, despite the name. Lingokids states that Lingokids Plus is billed either monthly or yearly and that both renew automatically until you cancel. The App Store listing shows products named Unlimited Membership and Lingokids Unlimited, but these are subscription products at monthly price points rather than a lifetime unlock. Treat anything labelled Unlimited as a renewing subscription and cancel it through the channel that sold it.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

What does Lingokids still do after I cancel?

Lingokids states that the family moves to free Basic access and can carry on playing every day. It describes Basic as free with no payment details needed and no time limit, offering 10 activities a day that refresh, and states the app is ad-free throughout. Plus is what adds the whole library, offline play, up to four child profiles and the full Progress Center reports.

How long is the Lingokids free trial?

Lingokids states that Lingokids Plus starts with a 7-day free trial, and that after that you can pay monthly or yearly. It states that a free trial turns into a paid subscription automatically when it ends and that cancelling before the trial is up means you will not be charged. Lingokids does not publish an hours-based deadline for the trial, though Apple and Google both warn that a cancellation made less than 24 hours before renewal may not stop it.

Does Lingokids sell a lifetime plan?

No. Lingokids states that Lingokids Plus is billed either monthly or yearly, whichever suits you, and that both renew automatically until you cancel. Products named Unlimited in the app stores are subscription products rather than a one-off purchase, so there is always something to cancel.

Can I get a refund after cancelling Lingokids?

Only inside the published windows, and the request is separate from the cancellation. Lingokids asks monthly subscribers to contact support within seven days of their first payment and yearly subscribers within 30 days, states that refunds are looked at case by case, and that an approved refund usually appears within five to 10 business days. Who reviews it depends on the channel: Lingokids reviews Google Play and its own website purchases, while Apple and Amazon handle their own.

How do I cancel an App Store free trial before I’m charged?

For a trial billed by Apple, open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Select the trial, choose the cancellation option and confirm. Apple advises cancelling at least 24 hours before the trial ends to prevent renewal. Check the confirmation for your access end date. Add the trial deadline to Subex and set a reminder so you can review it in time.
