LEARNINGSubscription cancellation guide

How to cancel MasterClass subscription.

MasterClass cannot be cancelled in its app: it states that cancellations cannot be made through the MasterClass app and that you must log in at masterclass.com using a web browser. From there the path is Settings, then the Membership section in Account Settings, then Cancel Membership, then Cancel Now. The refund rule is narrower than it first sounds. MasterClass states it will honor a full refund within the first 30 days of your initial subscription purchase, that the 30-day period begins on the date of your original transaction, and that the guarantee is available only for first-time purchases made directly on the MasterClass website. It states renewal charges are not eligible for refunds, and that it cannot process or extend refunds for Apple purchases. Membership is an annual auto-renewing subscription, and MasterClass states a renewal reminder is sent 30 days before your renewal date.

Before you start.

  • Check whether you are inside the 30-day guarantee, and check it against the right date. MasterClass states that it will honor a full refund within the first 30 days of your initial subscription purchase and that the 30-day period begins on the date of your original transaction. On an annual membership that date is the start of the year, not the most recent charge.
  • The guarantee has three exclusions worth knowing before you rely on it. MasterClass states it is available only for first-time purchases made directly on the MasterClass website, and that it does not cover renewals, redeemed gifts or MasterClass At Work accounts.
  • A renewal cannot be refunded at all. MasterClass states that renewal charges are not eligible for refunds, and that a renewal reminder is sent 30 days before your renewal date. That reminder is the practical last chance to avoid an annual charge.
  • You cannot do this on a phone app. MasterClass states that cancellations cannot be made through the MasterClass app and that you should log in at masterclass.com using a web browser. On a phone it asks you to use a mobile browser and to ignore the Go to the App button.
  • If a store sold it, the store handles both the cancellation and the refund. MasterClass states that subscriptions purchased through the iOS App Store or Google Play must be cancelled directly through the respective app store, that it is not responsible for processing cancellations, renewals or refunds for subscriptions purchased through third-party marketplaces, and specifically that it cannot process or extend refunds for Apple purchases. It also names Amazon and Roku as billing channels.
  • Downloaded classes are tied to the apps rather than the web. MasterClass states that Plus and Premium plan members can download classes and lessons using the Android and iOS mobile apps and that downloading through the web is not supported, so offline copies live inside an app whose access depends on the membership.

FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE

Cancel MasterClass, step by step.

Cancel MasterClass on the website

This is the route for a membership bought directly from MasterClass, and it is the only self-service route, since MasterClass states cancellations cannot be made in its app.

  1. Log into your account at masterclass.com in a web browser. On a phone, use a mobile browser and ignore the Go to the App button.
  2. Click your profile or account menu in the top right, then select Settings.
  3. In Account Settings, find the Membership section and click Cancel Membership.
  4. On the next screen, select Cancel Now to confirm and complete your cancellation.
  5. Watch for the confirmation email, which MasterClass states you receive once your cancellation is processed.

MasterClass states that your subscription is set to cancel at the end of your current billing period and remains active until the renewal date. If you change your mind, MasterClass labels the reversal Reactivate in the same settings area.

Cancel a MasterClass subscription billed by Apple

MasterClass states that a subscription purchased through the iOS App Store must be cancelled directly through that store, and this is also the channel where MasterClass can do least for you.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your name at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Select MasterClass.
  5. Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.

MasterClass states, citing its Terms of Service, that it cannot process or extend refunds for Apple purchases, and that where a membership was bought through a third-party marketplace that provider manages all refund requests under its own policies. The 30-day satisfaction guarantee covers first-time purchases made directly on the MasterClass website, so it does not reach an Apple purchase.

Cancel a MasterClass subscription billed by Google Play

A membership bought in the MasterClass Android app is a Google Play purchase, and MasterClass directs those members to the store.

  1. Open the Google Play Store app with the Google Account that bought the subscription.
  2. Open Menu, then Subscriptions.
  3. Select the MasterClass subscription.
  4. Tap Cancel Subscription and follow the prompts.

MasterClass states that it is not responsible for processing or resolving cancellations, renewals or refunds for subscriptions purchased through third-party marketplaces, so a refund request for a Google Play purchase goes to Google under its policy rather than to MasterClass.

What happens next?

  • MasterClass states that your subscription is set to cancel at the end of your current billing period and remains active until the renewal date, so you keep the access you paid for.
  • MasterClass states you will receive a confirmation email once your cancellation is processed, which is the record that the membership will not renew.
  • Profiles are not separate memberships. MasterClass states that with its Plus and Premium plans you can add up to 5 additional profiles to your account, 6 in total, so these are profiles under one membership rather than separately billed seats and cancelling ends the whole thing.
  • Downloaded classes depend on the apps and on the membership. MasterClass states downloads are made using the Android and iOS mobile apps and that downloading through the web is not supported.
  • MasterClass states that refunds, where granted, take 5 to 10 business days, and that redeemed gifts are not refundable while unredeemed gifts within 30 days are handled through support chat.

Cancelling a MasterClass free trial.

How do I cancel an App Store free trial before I’m charged?

For a trial billed by Apple, open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Select the trial, choose the cancellation option and confirm. Apple advises cancelling at least 24 hours before the trial ends to prevent renewal. Check the confirmation for your access end date. If you track it in Subex, enter the date the trial converts as the renewal date and set a reminder 1 or 3 days before.

WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK

If you get stuck.

I cannot find a cancel option in the MasterClass app

There is not one. MasterClass states that cancellations cannot be made through the MasterClass app and that you must log in at masterclass.com using a web browser to make changes. On a phone it specifically asks you to use a mobile browser and to ignore the Go to the App button, which otherwise sends you back into the app where the option does not exist. The other reason there may be nothing to cancel is that a store sold it, in which case the subscription lives in that store's settings.

MasterClass refused my refund even though I asked inside 30 days

The guarantee has conditions beyond the date, and one of them probably applied. MasterClass states that the 30-Day Satisfaction Guarantee is available only for first-time purchases made directly on the MasterClass website, and that it does not cover renewals, redeemed gifts or MasterClass At Work accounts. It also states the 30-day period begins on the date of your original transaction, so on an annual membership the clock started when you first joined rather than when the latest charge arrived.

My membership renewed and I want that charge back

MasterClass states plainly that renewal charges are not eligible for refunds, citing its Terms of Service. What it offers instead is notice: it states that a renewal reminder is sent 30 days before your renewal date. Membership is an annual auto-renewing subscription, so that email is the moment to act if you do not want another year. Cancelling after the renewal stops the following year and leaves you with the access you have just paid for.

I upgraded or downgraded my plan and thought it reset my refund window

It does not. MasterClass states that changing your plan does not reset your 30-day satisfaction guarantee or refund eligibility period. It states that upgrades take effect immediately and are prorated while downgrades take effect at the next billing cycle, and labels the flow Change Plan, then Continue, then Confirm New Plan. So a plan change is not a new original transaction, and the guarantee still runs from the first one.

I bought MasterClass through Amazon or Roku and cannot cancel it on the site

Those are third-party marketplaces and MasterClass treats them the way it treats Apple and Google. It states that it is not responsible for processing or resolving cancellations, renewals or refunds for subscriptions purchased through third-party marketplaces, and that where a membership was purchased through one, that provider manages all refund requests under its own policies. Check the receipt for the billing company and take both the cancellation and any refund request there.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

What is the MasterClass 30-day guarantee exactly?

MasterClass calls it the 30-Day Satisfaction Guarantee and states it will honor a full refund within the first 30 days of your initial subscription purchase, with the 30-day period beginning on the date of your original transaction. It states the guarantee is available only for first-time purchases made directly on the MasterClass website and does not cover renewals, redeemed gifts or MasterClass At Work accounts.

Can I cancel MasterClass in the app?

No. MasterClass states that cancellations cannot be made through the MasterClass app and that you should log in at masterclass.com using a web browser. The exception is a subscription bought through the iOS App Store or Google Play, which MasterClass states must be cancelled directly through that app store rather than on its website.

When does my MasterClass access end after cancelling?

MasterClass states that your subscription is set to cancel at the end of your current billing period and remains active until the renewal date. Since membership is an annual auto-renewing subscription, that can be a long time after you cancel. MasterClass states you receive a confirmation email once the cancellation is processed.

Does cancelling remove the extra profiles on my plan?

The profiles belong to the one membership, so they end with it. MasterClass states that with its Plus and Premium plans you can add up to 5 additional profiles to your account, 6 in total, and describes the plans in terms of simultaneous streams rather than separate billing. There is no per-profile cancellation, and no separate charge to stop.
