In this guide
Before you start.
- Check the refund rule before you cancel, because it is offered during the cancellation itself. Midjourney states you are eligible for a refund only if you have used less than 20 GPU minutes throughout the lifetime of your account, counting Fast, Turbo and Relax time, and that if you qualify the option to request one appears automatically when you cancel.
- Do not look for the subscription in Discord's settings. Midjourney states that the Subscriptions page in Discord user settings only shows Discord Nitro subscriptions and that Midjourney subscriptions are not listed there.
- Unused Fast time does not bank. Midjourney states that unused Fast time from your subscription does not carry over to the next month, on monthly and yearly plans alike.
- Purchased extra Fast hours are a separate matter. Midjourney states they come with a 60 day expiration, that an active subscription is needed to use them, that they will not be available if your subscription lapses unless you renew, and that once purchased they cannot be refunded.
- There is no permanent off switch. Midjourney states that all subscriptions renew automatically, that you need to cancel before renewal each time you subscribe, and that disabling automatic renewals entirely is not an option.
FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE
Cancel Midjourney, step by step.
Cancel on the Midjourney website
This is the only route Midjourney documents. Its help centre describes billing entirely through the Manage Subscription page, not through Discord.
- Sign in at midjourney.com with the account that holds the subscription, using the same Discord or Google login you signed up with.
- Open your Manage Subscription page.
- If an upgrade or downgrade is scheduled, click the Cancel Change button first: Midjourney states you have to clear it before cancelling.
- Click the Cancel Plan button.
- Work through the prompts. If you qualify, Midjourney states the option to request a refund appears here automatically.
- Check Usage Details on the same page for the Fast time you still have, since you keep it until the cycle ends.
Midjourney labels the sections on that page: remaining Fast time under Usage Details, price under Billing & Payment, the tier change under Change Plan, and payment details under Edit Billing and View Invoices.
Downgrade instead of cancelling
A lower tier keeps the account and some Fast time. The timing is different from an upgrade, and neither refunds the plan you are on.
- Open the Manage Subscription page and use the Change Plan button.
- Pick the lower tier. Midjourney states the change takes effect at your next renewal rather than immediately.
- Expect no money back: Midjourney states that downgrading will not refund your current plan.
- If you are on a yearly plan and want an upgraded monthly plan, contact Midjourney's billing support: it states the website will not allow that change immediately.
Midjourney states that an immediate upgrade gives a discount based on any unused Fast time from your current plan, and that if all your Fast time is used the new plan is charged at full price.
Stop a paused plan that keeps retrying payment
A failed renewal does not end the subscription by itself. Midjourney keeps trying, which is why charges can appear after you thought you had stopped.
- Open the Manage Subscription page and look for a plan marked Paused.
- Cancel the paused plan there: Midjourney states this is how to immediately stop the payment attempts.
- Do not treat a pending transaction as a charge: Midjourney states a declined payment often shows as a pending transaction in your bank account and that this does not mean the payment succeeded.
- Confirm with the receipt. Midjourney states that a successful payment always produces an email with your receipt and invoice.
Midjourney states that its system automatically retries a failed payment multiple times over several days, and that if none of the attempts work the subscription is automatically cancelled.
What happens next?
- The plan runs to the end of the billing cycle. Midjourney states you keep all subscription features, including any remaining Fast time, until then.
- Your images stay. Midjourney states that cancelling does not delete your generated images or account history, that private images stay private, and that you can access your images on midjourney.com even without an active subscription.
- You keep ownership. Midjourney states that you own all the images and videos you create even if you cancel, with the exception that an image you upscaled from another user's creation belongs to that creator.
- Content made privately stays private. Midjourney states that if you cancel or downgrade, any content you made private stays that way on the site, although Stealth Mode itself is a Pro and Mega feature.
- Midjourney states that images can appear on the Explore page by default, including images made in private Discord servers or direct messages with the bot, so cancelling does not by itself make past work private.
- Purchased Fast hours become unusable. Midjourney states that they need an active subscription and will not be available if the subscription lapses unless you renew.
WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK
If you get stuck.
I cannot find Midjourney in Discord's subscriptions page
You will not. Midjourney states that the Subscriptions page in Discord user settings only shows Discord Nitro subscriptions and that Midjourney subscriptions are not listed there. It also notes that someone who signed up for Discord Nitro thinking it would let them use Midjourney might be able to get a refund from Discord. Midjourney billing lives on the Manage Subscription page at midjourney.com.
I was charged after I thought I had cancelled
Check whether the plan was paused rather than cancelled. Midjourney states that a failed renewal marks the plan as Paused and that its system retries the payment multiple times over several days, and that you have to cancel the paused plan to stop the attempts immediately. Also check that you received only one email receipt: Midjourney states that if you did not get more than one receipt, you were likely not charged more than once.
I lost access to the Discord or Google account I signed up with
Midjourney states that you should contact Discord Support or Google Support first, and that Midjourney support cannot help recover login details for those services. It also states that a subscription and image history cannot be transferred, though in some cases a credit transfer may be possible if you need to subscribe with a different account, and that the gallery and image count history will not move.
The refund option did not appear when I cancelled
Midjourney states that if you qualify you automatically see the option to request one when you cancel, and that if you do not see the refund option it is unable to provide a refund. The rule is that you must have used less than 20 GPU minutes across the lifetime of the account, which covers Fast, Turbo and Relax time together.
My Fast hours disappeared at the end of the month
That is the documented behaviour rather than a fault. Midjourney states that unused Fast time from your subscription does not carry over to the next month on either monthly or yearly plans, and that separately purchased Fast hours expire after 60 days and cannot be refunded.
Still not cancelled?Common reasons a subscription will not cancel
GOOD TO KNOW
Questions, answered.
How do I cancel my Midjourney subscription?
Go to your Manage Subscription page at midjourney.com and click Cancel Plan. If a plan change is already scheduled, Midjourney states you have to clear it with the Cancel Change button first. There is no app store subscription to cancel, because Midjourney bills on its website.
Can I cancel Midjourney from Discord?
Midjourney documents cancellation only through the Manage Subscription page on its website. It states that Discord's own Subscriptions page shows Discord Nitro subscriptions only, and that Midjourney subscriptions do not appear there. In Discord, the info command shows renewal time and remaining Fast time rather than billing controls.
Can I get a refund from Midjourney?
Only under a narrow rule. Midjourney states you are eligible only if you have used less than 20 GPU minutes over the lifetime of the account, including Fast, Turbo and Relax time, and that the option appears automatically during cancellation if you qualify. It states processing may take up to 10 business days.
Do I keep my images after cancelling?
Yes. Midjourney states that cancelling does not delete your generated images or account history, that they stay accessible on midjourney.com without an active subscription, and that you own the images and videos you create even after cancelling.
Can I turn off auto-renewal without cancelling?
No. Midjourney states that all subscriptions renew automatically, that you need to cancel before renewal each time you subscribe, and that disabling automatic renewals entirely is not an option.
