In this guide
Before you start.
- Find the receipt before you open anything. X states that you manage the subscription from the platform where you subscribed, so an App Store receipt means the cancellation happens in iOS Settings and nowhere else.
- Cancel at least 24 hours before renewal. X states this explicitly as the way to avoid further charges, and that cancelling does not refund amounts already paid.
- Expect no refund. X states that all subscriptions are non-refundable unless required by law, including subscriptions linked to X accounts that have been suspended or that you have lost access to for any other reason, and including situations where features are temporarily or permanently unavailable.
- Tier changes are not available everywhere. X states that upgrading and downgrading is currently only supported on iOS and web, so on Android changing tier means cancelling in Google Play and subscribing again.
- A SuperGrok plan from xAI is a different subscription. X Premium+ includes SuperGrok access, but xAI states that X rather than xAI processes X Premium refunds where required by law, so cancelling one does not touch the other.
FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE
Cancel X Premium, step by step.
Cancel X Premium on the web
Use this if you subscribed at x.com. X describes Premium as reached from the side navigation, and the same surface is where the subscription is managed.
- Go to x.com and sign in with the account that holds the subscription.
- Select Premium from the side navigation.
- Open the subscription management options shown for your current tier.
- Cancel the subscription and confirm, at least 24 hours before the renewal date.
- Check that the page shows the date your Premium features expire.
X states that when you upgrade to a higher-priced tier on web, the remaining credit from your current billing cycle is applied to the new tier's cost, you are charged the difference immediately, and the switch takes effect right away. A downgrade is different: the current plan runs to the end of the cycle with no refund.
Cancel a subscription bought on iPhone or iPad
Apple bills an App Store purchase. X states that you should contact Apple directly for all app related refund and cancellation issues.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap your name (your Apple Account) at the top of the screen.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Select X from the list of active subscriptions.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
X states that on iOS, upgrading to a higher priced tier gives a partial, prorated refund for the remainder of the previous subscription if you switch tiers from the platform you were previously subscribed on. Apple states that if there is no Cancel button, or an expiration message in red, the subscription is already cancelled.
Cancel a subscription bought on Android
Google Play bills the Android purchase. The X app is published as com.twitter.android for historical reasons, which is correct rather than a mismatch.
- Open the Google Play Store app.
- Tap your profile icon in the top right.
- Select Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Select X.
- Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts to confirm.
X states that upgrading and downgrading is currently only supported on iOS and web, so on Android a tier change means cancelling here and subscribing again at the tier you want.
Cancel Premium Business or Premium Organizations
These are the renamed Verified Organizations products, billed through a separate web-only Portal rather than through X settings, and cancelling behaves differently from an individual plan.
- Open the Portal on the web: X states the Portal is a web-only enterprise feature and that management and billing through it are exclusively available on web.
- Navigate to the Settings tab in your Portal.
- Cancel the subscription there.
- Check the Billing tab if you need invoices, which X states takes you to its payment provider Stripe's customer billing portal.
X states that cancelling Premium Business results in the account immediately losing its gold checkmark, that all affiliated accounts are immediately removed and lose their checkmarks and affiliate badges, and that you will not be refunded for the remaining period left on your subscription. It also states that downgrading is not supported, so a change of tier means cancelling and resubscribing.
What happens next?
- Features run to the end of the cycle. X states that your Premium features expire at the end of your billing cycle rather than when you cancel.
- The checkmark goes at the end too, on an individual plan. X states that if you subscribe and cancel, the blue checkmark remains until the end of the subscription term you paid for, unless the account is suspended or the checkmark is otherwise removed by X.
- Long posts you already published stay readable. X states that everyone can read longer posts but only Premium subscribers can create them, so cancelling stops the writing rather than the reading.
- X states that it reserves the right without notice to remove your blue checkmark at any time in its sole discretion without offering a refund, including if you violate its Terms of Service or your account is suspended.
- On the business products the timing is reversed. X states that cancelling Premium Business removes the gold checkmark immediately and strips affiliated accounts at once, with no refund for the remaining period.
WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK
If you get stuck.
I cancelled but was charged for another month
Check the timing against X's rule. X states that to avoid further charges you must cancel at least 24 hours before the auto-renewal period, and that cancelling will not give you a refund for amounts already paid. A cancellation inside that window still lets the next cycle bill.
There is no cancel option in my X settings
That usually means X is not the biller. X states that you manage the subscription from your settings on the platform where you subscribed, and that you should contact Apple or Google directly for all app related refund and cancellation issues. Check the store's subscription list for an X entry.
My checkmark disappeared but I am still being billed
X names a specific cause: once subscribed, changes to your profile photo, display name or username result in the loss of the blue checkmark until the account is validated as continuing to meet the requirements, and no further changes are allowed during that review. The subscription keeps running through the review, so the billing and the badge are separate questions.
I cannot change tier on my Android phone
X states that upgrading and downgrading is currently only supported on iOS and web. On Android the route is to cancel the existing subscription in Google Play and subscribe again at the tier you want, which means the old plan runs to the end of its cycle first.
My account was suspended and I want the money back
X's stated position covers this directly: all subscriptions are non-refundable unless required by law, and that includes subscriptions linked to X accounts that have been suspended or that you have lost access to for any other reason, as well as cases where features are temporarily or permanently unavailable.
Still not cancelled?Common reasons a subscription will not cancel How to cancel an app subscription
GOOD TO KNOW
Questions, answered.
How do I cancel X Premium?
On the platform you subscribed on. On the web, go to x.com, select Premium from the side navigation and cancel there. On iPhone, use Settings, your Apple Account name, Subscriptions, X, Cancel Subscription. On Android, cancel in Google Play under Payments & subscriptions. Cancel at least 24 hours before renewal.
Does X refund a cancelled Premium subscription?
X states that all subscriptions are non-refundable unless required by law, and that cancelling will not give you a refund for amounts already paid. It names suspended accounts and unavailable features as still non-refundable.
When does my blue checkmark go away?
X states that after cancelling, the blue checkmark remains until the end of the subscription term you paid for, unless the account is suspended or the checkmark is removed by X for another reason. Premium Business is different: X states the gold checkmark is lost immediately on cancellation.
Is SuperGrok part of my X Premium subscription?
X states that Premium+ includes SuperGrok access, and that Premium Business and Premium Organizations accounts receive Premium+ including SuperGrok. A SuperGrok plan bought directly from xAI is a separate subscription: xAI states that X, not xAI, handles X Premium refunds where required by law.
Why is the X app listed as com.twitter.android?
That is the app's original package name from before the rename, and Google Play keeps a package identifier for the life of an app. Finding com.twitter.android on your Play receipt is the correct X app rather than a sign of a wrong charge.
