In this guide
Before you start.
- Work out which billing system you are on, because the button differs. Atlassian's legacy Billing page shows Explore plans plus a separate Cancel link at the bottom. Centralized billing shows Change plan, no Cancel link, and a note that you can also find your Workspace's billing from admin.atlassian.com/billing.
- Check your role. Atlassian states you need to be a Workspace administrator, and separately that the Workspace administrator role is separate from the billing administrator role and that not all Workspace admins are billing admins. It also states an organization admin and a site admin cannot access the Billing accounts page unless they also have billing admin rights.
- Use a browser. Atlassian states its desktop and mobile apps do not currently support subscription management. Trello's mobile apps sell no in-app purchases, so no store ever bills the plan.
- Count your boards and collaborators before you downgrade. Atlassian states the 10 most active Workspace boards will remain open and other boards will be closed but not deleted, and separately that boards in a Workspace become view-only until the number of collaborators is reduced below 10.
- Know the refund rules before the renewal date arrives. Atlassian states refunds for cloud subscriptions are only available within the first paid month after the trial period for monthly subscriptions, and within 30 days of payment for annual subscriptions, that after these periods refunds cannot be offered, and that cloud renewals and upgrades cannot be refunded.
- Atlassian states no credit is offered for cancelling an account prior to the end of a billing cycle.
- Removing people does not cut the bill now. Atlassian states that removing someone from a Workspace makes their seat available to reassign at no extra cost until the end of your billing period, and that if you have empty seats when your Workspace subscription renews you will not be charged for them.
- Pending invites count. A person you invited but who has not accepted is still billed as a collaborator, so cancel outstanding invitations before a renewal.
- If you have more than one upgraded Workspace, each bills separately, and a person in two Workspaces is paid for twice.
FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE
Cancel Trello, step by step.
Cancel on Atlassian centralized billing
Use this when your Billing page shows Change plan and no Cancel link. There is no cancel button on this system: choosing Free is the cancellation.
- Open Trello in a browser and click the Trello logo, then select your Workspace.
- Open Billing.
- Click Change plan.
- Select the Free plan and confirm.
- Check the page shows the plan ending at the end of the current billing period.
- If you cannot reach the controls, open admin.atlassian.com/billing, which the Billing page points to.
Atlassian states that on centralized billing only Billing admins update the payment card, and that upgrading, downgrading and deactivating require a Billing admin, Organization admin or Site admin, with the caveat that organization and site admins cannot reach the Billing accounts page without billing admin rights.
Cancel on Trello legacy billing
Use this when your Billing page shows Explore plans and a Cancel link at the bottom. This Workspace has not been moved to Atlassian's centralized system.
- Open Trello in a browser and click the Trello logo, then select your Workspace.
- Open Billing.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Cancel.
- Work through the confirmation prompts.
- Check the page reflects the cancellation and note the end date.
Atlassian states the subscription is cancelled at the end of its billing period and the Workspace becomes a free Workspace. On legacy billing, Workspace admins update the payment card.
Move from Premium to Standard instead
Worth considering if you want to keep some paid features. The timing is asymmetric and worth knowing.
- Open the Workspace Billing page.
- Use Change plan, or Explore plans on legacy billing.
- Select Standard and confirm.
- Expect the change at the end of the period: a downgrade from Premium to Standard takes effect then, while an upgrade from Standard to Premium is immediate and charged prorated.
- Check which paid features you rely on, since Atlassian states data from paid features will be hidden but not deleted.
Delete the Workspace or the account afterwards
Both need the subscription cancelled first, and both have a trap Atlassian documents.
- Cancel the subscription first: Atlassian states you need to cancel the subscription before being able to delete the Workspace.
- Once the plan has ended, delete the Workspace from its settings.
- If you are deleting your Atlassian account instead, note that Atlassian states deleting an account does not cancel your Workspace's plan.
- Deleting an account forces you to appoint a new admin, and Atlassian states only the new admin will be able to cancel the subscription, so cancel before you go.
Atlassian states it cannot delete an account on your behalf and that the deletion must happen while logged in.
What happens next?
- The paid plan runs to the end of the period. Atlassian states the subscription is cancelled at the end of its billing period and the Workspace becomes a free Workspace, and that no credit is offered for cancelling prior to the end of a billing cycle.
- Boards are closed rather than deleted. Atlassian states the 10 most active Workspace boards will remain open and that other boards will be closed but not deleted. A closed board can be reopened, one at a time, by an admin.
- The collaborator limit works differently from the board limit. Atlassian states that boards in a Workspace become view-only until the number of collaborators is reduced below 10, and that automations set up to run on boards in the Workspace will not run.
- That collaborator count includes pending invites, and excludes people who are only on closed boards and deactivated accounts.
- Paid feature data is hidden, not destroyed. Atlassian states data from paid features will be hidden but not deleted.
- The free plan is more generous than people expect on some axes: unlimited cards, unlimited Power-Ups, 10 MB per file, and 250 automation runs a month resetting on the first of the month.
- Atlassian states refunds are only available within the first paid month after the trial for monthly subscriptions and within 30 days of payment for annual ones, that after those periods refunds cannot be offered, and that cloud renewals and upgrades cannot be refunded.
WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK
If you get stuck.
There is no Cancel link on my Trello billing page
Your Workspace has been moved to Atlassian centralized billing, where the Cancel link does not exist. Click Change plan and select Free instead: that is the cancellation on that system. The same page also points to admin.atlassian.com/billing. If you see Explore plans and a Cancel link at the bottom, you are still on legacy billing.
I cancelled and Trello charged me again
Three documented causes. The cancellation applies at the end of the billing period and Atlassian states no credit is offered for cancelling before then. Billing is per Workspace, so a second upgraded Workspace keeps billing on its own. And if an annual renewal has already gone through, Atlassian states cloud renewals cannot be refunded, so the charge stands even inside the 30 day annual window.
My boards went read-only after downgrading
Two different limits produce two different symptoms, and they have different fixes. Over 10 boards: Atlassian states the 10 most active boards stay open and the rest are closed but not deleted, and an admin can reopen them one at a time. Over 10 collaborators: Atlassian states boards become view-only until the number of collaborators is reduced below 10, and automations stop running. Count both before deciding what to cut.
The admin who set up billing has left the company
Atlassian documents an escape hatch for exactly this: it states it can cancel the subscription on your behalf, that some proof of purchase may be required, and that the Workspace will not lose any data. Contact Atlassian support with the Workspace name and the billing details you can evidence. In the meantime, appoint a new Workspace admin so the account is manageable.
I removed people and the bill did not drop
Atlassian states that removing someone from a Workspace makes their seat available to reassign at no extra cost until the end of your billing period, and that you will not be charged for empty seats when the subscription renews. Its maximum quantity billing rule is stricter still: the bill is based on the highest number of seats at any point during the cycle, with no credits or refunds for seats removed mid-cycle. On annual plans, seats cannot be reduced mid-term.
I deleted my Atlassian account and the bill continued
Atlassian states this outright: deleting an account does not cancel your Workspace's plan. Deleting also forces you to appoint a new admin, and Atlassian states only the new admin will be able to cancel the subscription, so the person who can stop the charge is no longer you. Cancel the plan first, then delete.
Still not cancelled?Common reasons a subscription will not cancel
GOOD TO KNOW
Questions, answered.
How do I cancel my Trello Premium subscription?
Open the Trello logo menu, select your Workspace, then Billing. On centralized billing, click Change plan and choose Free. On legacy billing, click the Cancel link at the bottom of the page. Atlassian states the plan ends at the end of its billing period.
What happens to my boards when Trello Premium ends?
Atlassian states the 10 most active Workspace boards remain open and that other boards are closed but not deleted, with an admin able to reopen them one at a time. If the Workspace has more than 10 collaborators, boards become view-only until the count drops below 10.
Does Atlassian refund a Trello subscription?
Only in a narrow window. Atlassian states refunds are available within the first paid month after the trial for monthly subscriptions and within 30 days of payment for annual subscriptions, that after those periods refunds cannot be offered, and that cloud renewals and upgrades cannot be refunded.
Can I cancel Trello in the mobile app?
No. Atlassian states its desktop and mobile apps do not currently support subscription management, so use a browser. Trello also sells no in-app purchases, which means an Apple or Google Play charge is not a Trello subscription.
Does deleting my Trello Workspace stop the billing?
You cannot delete it first. Atlassian states you need to cancel the subscription before being able to delete the Workspace, and separately that deleting your Atlassian account does not cancel your Workspace's plan.
