MUSIC & AUDIOSubscription cancellation guide

How to cancel Amazon Music subscription.

Amazon states you may cancel the auto renewal of your Unlimited Plan by visiting Amazon Music Settings and adjusting your subscription settings. Before you do, identify which Amazon Music you are paying for, because three things share the name. Amazon Music Unlimited is the paid subscription. Amazon Music Prime is a benefit of Prime membership, so there is no separate subscription to cancel and stopping it means ending Prime. Amazon Music with ads is free. Amazon's terms are blunt about renewal: unless you notify Amazon before a charge that you do not want to auto renew, the Unlimited Plan automatically continues.

Before you start.

  • Work out which product the charge belongs to. Amazon Music Unlimited is a paid subscription with its own charge. Amazon Music Prime comes with a Prime membership, so cancelling it is not possible on its own and the charge you are seeing is the Prime membership instead.
  • Amazon states you may cancel the auto renewal of your Unlimited Plan by visiting Amazon Music Settings and adjusting your subscription settings. That is the page to open, not the general Amazon account page.
  • Act before the charge rather than after it. Amazon's terms state that unless you notify Amazon before a charge that you do not want to auto renew, the Unlimited Plan will automatically continue.
  • Know that payment is generally not refundable. Amazon states payment is non-refundable except in the specific cases its terms set out, or if you signed up through a third party, in which case that party's rules apply.
  • If you are in the EU, the UK or Brazil, there is a statutory window worth knowing. Amazon states you may cancel your Unlimited Plan by communicating your withdrawal within 14 days of sign up, and that it will refund any fee you paid.
  • If you are on a trial, check what it converts to. Amazon states some trial plans automatically convert to a paid plan unless you cancel before the end of the trial.
  • On a Family plan, the account that holds the plan is the one that ends it. Amazon states a Family Unlimited Plan lets you share content with up to five family members, and that up to six Amazon accounts may be associated with one plan.

FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE

Cancel Amazon Music, step by step.

Cancel Amazon Music Unlimited in Amazon Music Settings

This is the route Amazon's own terms point to for a subscription Amazon bills directly, which covers most Amazon Music Unlimited plans.

  1. Sign in to Amazon with the account holding the subscription and open Amazon Music Settings.
  2. Find your Amazon Music Unlimited subscription in the subscription settings.
  3. Choose the option to cancel or to turn off the automatic renewal.
  4. Work through any retention offers to a confirmation rather than stopping at a discount screen.
  5. Check the same settings page afterwards: Amazon states the amount of the fee and the next due date are shown in Amazon Music Settings, so a remaining due date means the renewal is still on.

Amazon states you may cancel the auto renewal of your Unlimited Plan by visiting Amazon Music Settings and adjusting your subscription settings. Access generally continues to the end of the period already paid for.

If the subscription is Amazon Music Prime

This is not a cancellation so much as a correction, and it resolves a large share of Amazon Music billing confusion.

  1. Check whether you actually hold Amazon Music Unlimited or are using Amazon Music Prime, which Amazon describes as a benefit under the Amazon Prime terms.
  2. If it is the Prime benefit, there is no separate music subscription and no separate charge for it: the charge on your statement is the Prime membership.
  3. Decide whether you want to end Prime itself, which is a different and much larger decision, or simply stop using the music.
  4. If you want only the music gone, nothing needs cancelling: stop using it and the Prime membership continues unchanged.

A subscription bought through another company

Amazon Music Unlimited is also sold through other channels, and Amazon's own terms acknowledge third-party sign-ups as a separate case with different refund rules.

  1. Check the receipt or the statement line to see who actually charged you.
  2. If the charge comes from a store or another company rather than Amazon, cancel it there, because Amazon Music Settings will not show a subscription Amazon does not bill.
  3. Ask that company about refunds too: Amazon states payment is non-refundable except in its stated cases, or if you signed up through a third party, where that party's terms govern.
  4. After cancelling elsewhere, check Amazon Music Settings to confirm no separate Amazon-billed subscription is also running.

What happens next?

  • Access generally continues to the end of the period you have already paid for rather than stopping on the day you cancel.
  • Amazon states payment is non-refundable except in the cases its terms describe, or where you signed up through a third party.
  • Songs saved from the Unlimited catalogue, including downloads, stop being available when the subscription ends, because they are licensed through it. Music you purchased from the Digital Music Store is different: Amazon states all sales are final and that it does not accept returns of purchased music, which also means the tracks remain yours.
  • If you still have Prime, Amazon Music Prime remains after Unlimited ends, so music does not disappear entirely, it narrows to the Prime catalogue.
  • On a Family plan, ending the plan removes access for everyone on it, up to the six Amazon accounts Amazon says may be associated with one plan.

Cancelling a Amazon Music free trial.

How do I cancel an App Store free trial before I’m charged?

For a trial billed by Apple, open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Select the trial, choose the cancellation option and confirm. Apple advises cancelling at least 24 hours before the trial ends to prevent renewal. Check the confirmation for your access end date. If you track it in Subex, enter the date the trial converts as the renewal date and set a reminder 1 or 3 days before.

WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK

If you get stuck.

I cancelled Amazon Music but I am still charged every month

Check what the charge actually is. Amazon Music Prime is a benefit of Prime membership rather than a music subscription, so if what you are paying is the Prime membership, cancelling music does nothing to it. Look at the amount and the description on the statement, and compare it against the next due date shown in Amazon Music Settings.

My free trial converted before I could stop it

Amazon states some trial plans automatically convert to a paid plan unless you cancel before the end of the trial, and that unless you notify Amazon before a charge that you do not want to auto renew, the plan automatically continues. Once the charge exists, Amazon states payment is non-refundable except in its stated cases, so the window to act is entirely before the trial ends.

I cannot find the subscription in Amazon Music Settings

Three common causes. It is on a different Amazon account from the one you are signed into, which is easy when a household shares devices. It is the Prime benefit rather than a separate subscription. Or a third party sold it to you, in which case Amazon does not bill it and it will not appear there: Amazon's own terms treat a third-party sign-up as a separate case.

My downloaded music stopped playing

Catalogue music is licensed through the subscription, so downloads stop working when it ends. That is separate from music you bought: Amazon states all sales in the Digital Music Store are final and it does not accept returns of purchased music, which is the other side of the same rule, purchased tracks stay yours.

I am in the EU or UK and want my money back

There is a specific window Amazon publishes for you. It states that you may cancel your Unlimited Plan by communicating your withdrawal within 14 days of sign up, and that if you paid a fee it will be refunded. That right is tied to sign-up rather than to any later renewal, so it does not help with a charge from a plan you have held for months.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

How do I cancel Amazon Music Unlimited?

Amazon states you may cancel the auto renewal of your Unlimited Plan by visiting Amazon Music Settings and adjusting your subscription settings. The fee amount and the next due date are shown on the same page, which is how you confirm the cancellation registered.

How do I cancel Amazon Music Prime?

You cannot cancel it separately. Amazon Music Prime is a benefit under the Amazon Prime terms rather than its own subscription, so the only way to end it is to end the Prime membership, which stops every other Prime benefit as well.

Can I get a refund on Amazon Music Unlimited?

Amazon states payment is non-refundable except in the cases set out in its terms, or if you signed up through a third party. In the EU, the UK and Brazil, Amazon states you may withdraw within 14 days of sign up and it will refund any fee paid.

Does cancelling Amazon Music cancel my Prime membership?

No. Amazon Music Unlimited and Amazon Prime are separate charges. Ending Unlimited leaves Prime running, and with it the Amazon Music Prime catalogue.
