Before you start.
- Check whether you are inside the 30-day guarantee before you simply cancel, because cancelling and refunding are different requests. Chess.com states that all first-time credit card and Android subscriptions are given a 30-day money-back guarantee, and that first-time buyers are eligible for a full refund within 30 days if they are not satisfied. If you are within that window, ask for the refund rather than only stopping the renewal.
- Apple purchases are the exception to that guarantee. Chess.com states that subscribers via iTunes are subject to Apple's subscription terms, that Apple does not provide a way for Chess.com to refund iTunes payments, and that all refunds and claims must be made directly via Apple.
- Work out where you bought it, because Chess.com cannot cancel a store subscription. Chess.com states that memberships purchased directly from Chess.com can only be managed on the Chess.com website, and that memberships purchased through Apple or Google Play are managed by the respective app store and cannot be cancelled on the Chess.com website.
- If you are on the 7-day free trial, the deadline is the trial end date. Chess.com states that each account is eligible for a free 7-day trial, that you will not be charged if you cancel before the trial period is over, and that if you do not cancel before it expires the membership automatically renews as a paid subscription.
- Do not expect a second trial. Chess.com states that free trials are generally available only once per eligible account, and that if you have already used your trial, starting another membership begins a paid subscription immediately instead of another trial. That is the usual explanation for a charge that arrives on day one.
- Know that a refund can be refused for conduct reasons. Chess.com states that refunds will not be given to subscribers who are banned from the site for violating the Terms and Conditions of site use, naming abusive behaviour and cheating.
How to find all your subscriptions How to cancel a membership
FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE
Cancel Chess.com, step by step.
Cancel a membership bought from Chess.com
This is the route for a membership bought directly on Chess.com with a card or PayPal. Chess.com states these cannot currently be cancelled through the mobile apps, so use a browser.
- Sign in on the Chess.com website with the account that holds the membership.
- Click the cogwheel icon for Settings in the bottom-left corner of any Chess.com page, then select All Settings.
- Choose Membership from the settings menu.
- Scroll down to the Cancel Premium Membership section and click Cancel Premium Membership.
- Continue through the next screens by clicking Cancel My Membership to confirm.
- Check the date shown for when your access ends, which Chess.com states you will see as part of the process.
Chess.com states that these steps cancel the automatic renewal, that your membership stays active and you do not lose time you have already paid for, and that once it ends you can either resubscribe or continue with a Basic account. Memberships bought directly from Chess.com cannot currently be cancelled through the mobile apps.
Cancel on iPhone or iPad
Chess.com states that a membership purchased through the Apple App Store is managed by that provider and cannot be cancelled from your Chess.com account.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name, then tap Subscriptions. On a computer you can open your subscriptions page on the iTunes Store instead.
- From the list of your active subscriptions, choose Chess.com.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
- Note the last day of access, which Chess.com states is shown on that screen.
This is also the route for a refund, and it is the one case where Chess.com cannot help. Chess.com states that Apple does not provide a way for it to refund iTunes payments and that all refunds and claims must be made directly via Apple, so the 30-day money-back guarantee does not reach an Apple purchase.
Cancel on Android
A membership started in the Chess.com Android app is a Google Play purchase. Chess.com states these are managed by Google Play rather than by Chess.com.
- Go to play.google.com and make sure you are logged into the correct Google Account, or open the Google Play Store app and tap your profile icon.
- Open My Subscriptions, or Payments & subscriptions then Subscriptions in the app.
- Select your Chess.com subscription and tap Manage.
- Choose to cancel the subscription and follow the confirmation steps.
Unlike Apple purchases, Android purchases are covered by Chess.com's guarantee: Chess.com states that all first-time credit card and Android subscriptions are given a 30-day money-back guarantee, and that it can help with a Google Play purchase if you contact Support with your GPA transaction ID.
Ask Chess.com for a refund
This is a separate request from cancelling, and it runs through the support messenger rather than a settings page. Use it for a first-time purchase inside 30 days, or for a double charge.
- Click Support in the bottom left menu of any Chess.com page to open the Support Messenger.
- Select Contact Support, then click Get Started in your conversation.
- Click Get more help to skip the Help Center articles, which lets you type the details of your request.
- Type that you want a refund and follow the prompts to reach the Billing team.
- Include the charge date, the amount and your username.
Chess.com states that if you believe you were charged twice you should submit a refund request so the Billing team can review it, and that refund requests for purchases made through the Apple App Store or iTunes must be submitted directly to Apple instead.
What happens next?
- Chess.com states that cancelling prevents future renewals and that your Premium benefits remain active until the end of your current billing period.
- The account survives. Chess.com states that your account automatically switches to a free Basic plan when the paid period ends, so your games, history and profile stay and Chess.com remains usable without paying.
- Chess.com states that these steps only cancel the automatic renewal and that you do not lose any time you have already paid for, so cancelling early in a period does not shorten it.
- Cancelling does not trigger a refund. Chess.com publishes a separate refund request route through the Support Messenger, and states that all first-time credit card and Android subscriptions are given a 30-day money-back guarantee.
- A ban changes the refund answer. Chess.com states that refunds will not be given to subscribers who are banned from the site due to violating the Terms and Conditions of site use, including abusive behaviour and cheating.
Cancelling a Chess.com free trial.
How long is the Chess.com free trial?
Chess.com states that each account is eligible for a free 7-day trial, covering the Gold, Platinum, Diamond or Family plan, and that you will not be charged if you cancel before the 7 days are over. A payment method is required, which Chess.com states is to verify the account and prevent abuse of multiple trials. Each eligible account gets one trial, so a second one on the same account is not something to count on.
How do I cancel an App Store free trial before I’m charged?
For a trial billed by Apple, open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Select the trial, choose the cancellation option and confirm. Apple advises cancelling at least 24 hours before the trial ends to prevent renewal. Check the confirmation for your access end date. If you track it in Subex, enter the date the trial converts as the renewal date and set a reminder 1 or 3 days before.
WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK
If you get stuck.
I cannot find a cancel option in the Chess.com app
That is expected rather than a fault. Chess.com states that memberships purchased directly from Chess.com cannot currently be cancelled through the mobile apps, so the cancellation has to happen in a browser: the Settings cogwheel, All Settings, Membership, then Cancel Premium Membership. The other possibility is that you bought through a store, in which case Chess.com states the subscription is managed by Apple or Google Play and cannot be cancelled on the Chess.com website at all.
Apple or Google says my subscription is active but Chess.com shows Basic
Chess.com publishes a page on exactly this, and states that in many cases the purchase is active but has not been linked to the correct Chess.com account. It asks you to confirm you are signed in to the correct Chess.com account, that the subscription is active in the store, that you are using the same Apple ID or Google account that made the purchase, and, if you have more than one Chess.com account, whether the membership landed on a different one. If it still does not appear, Chess.com asks you to contact Support with your username and purchase receipt.
I started a free trial but was charged immediately
Chess.com states that free trials are generally available only once per eligible account, and that if you have already used your free trial, starting another membership begins a paid subscription immediately instead of another trial. It distinguishes this from cancelling an active trial before it renews. If you believe the charge was an error, Chess.com directs you to its refund request route, and first-time card and Android buyers are covered by the 30-day guarantee.
Chess.com will not refund my Apple purchase
It cannot. Chess.com states that subscribers via iTunes are subject to Apple's subscription terms, that Apple does not provide a way for Chess.com to refund iTunes payments, and that all refunds and claims must be made directly via Apple. The 30-day money-back guarantee Chess.com advertises covers first-time credit card and Android subscriptions, not Apple ones. The request goes to Apple's own report a problem process instead.
The price I was charged is not the price I saw
Chess.com names three causes. The first is buying a different plan from the one intended, since a Gold monthly and a Diamond yearly membership carry very different prices. The second is local taxes or currency conversion changing the final amount. The third applies to store purchases: Chess.com states that prices shown in the Apple App Store and Google Play are managed by Apple and Google and may differ from prices shown on Chess.com, and advises reviewing the store price before confirming. If it still looks wrong, Chess.com asks you to contact Support with the purchase receipt.
Still not cancelled?Common reasons a subscription will not cancel How to cancel an app subscription
GOOD TO KNOW
Questions, answered.
Can I still play chess after cancelling?
Yes. Chess.com states that your account automatically switches to a free Basic plan once the paid period ends. You keep the account, and Chess.com is usable without a membership. What you lose is the Premium feature set that the paid tiers add.
Does Chess.com give refunds?
For some purchases. Chess.com states that all first-time credit card and Android subscriptions are given a 30-day money-back guarantee, and that first-time buyers are eligible for a full refund within 30 days if they are not satisfied. It states that refunds will not be given to subscribers banned for violating the Terms and Conditions, and that Apple purchases must be refunded by Apple because Apple provides no way for Chess.com to refund iTunes payments.
I cancelled but I still have Premium, did it work?
Almost certainly yes. Chess.com states that cancelling your subscription prevents future renewals and that your Premium benefits remain active until the end of your current billing period. Continued access is the expected outcome rather than a sign the cancellation failed. The thing to check is the end date shown during the cancellation, and that the Membership settings page no longer offers to cancel a renewing plan.
