Before you start.
- Expect no refund, because Duolingo's terms say so directly. They state that all payments are nonrefundable and that there are no refunds or credits for Virtual Items or partially used membership periods, unless otherwise required by the law in your jurisdiction. Cancelling saves the next charge and nothing more.
- Work out who took the money before you start looking for a button. Duolingo's terms state that if you made purchases on Duolingo through the Apple or Google app stores, payments and refunds are handled by Apple or Google respectively, and that Duolingo cannot issue refunds for those purchases. A store subscription cannot be cancelled from your Duolingo account.
- Deleting your account does not end the subscription. Duolingo's terms state that if you want to change or terminate your subscription you need to log in to your Duolingo account and follow instructions to do so, even if you have deleted your account. That last clause is the warning: deletion leaves the billing running.
- If you are on the free trial, the deadline is a day before it ends. Duolingo's trial timeline for Super describes a one-week free trial where the account is charged on day seven and says to cancel at least 24 hours before that point.
- Check whether you are the owner of a Family Plan rather than a member of one. Duolingo describes the Family Plan as covering up to six Super accounts, and a shared plan is billed to whoever set it up. A member of somebody else's plan has no payment of their own to cancel.
- If your Duolingo access comes through a school, there is probably no subscription behind it. Duolingo states that Duolingo for Schools is 100% free and describes it as a free layer of management sitting on top of the Duolingo app, so a classroom setup is not a paid tier that a teacher is billing you for.

Cancel a Duolingo Super subscription billed by Apple
Many Super subscriptions are bought inside the iPhone or iPad app, which makes Apple the biller. Duolingo's terms state that payments and refunds for those purchases are handled by Apple.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap your name at the top of the screen.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Select the Duolingo entry.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
Duolingo's terms state that it cannot issue refunds for purchases made through the Apple app store, so a refund request goes to Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com under Apple's own policy. Apple also warns that a cancellation made less than 24 hours before renewal may not stop that renewal.
Cancel a Duolingo Super subscription billed by Google Play
A subscription started in the Duolingo Android app is a Google Play purchase. Duolingo's terms state payments and refunds for these are handled by Google.
- Open the Google Play Store app with the Google Account that bought the subscription.
- Tap your profile icon in the top right.
- Select Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Select Duolingo.
- Tap Cancel subscription and complete the steps.
Duolingo's terms state that it cannot issue refunds for purchases made through the Google app store. Google's own refund window for Play purchases is short, so a refund request is worth making promptly through Google Play rather than through Duolingo.
Cancel a Duolingo subscription bought on the website
This is the route for a subscription bought directly from Duolingo rather than through a store. Duolingo's terms name your account settings as the place, without publishing a fixed set of button labels.
- Log in to your Duolingo account on the website with the account that holds the subscription.
- Open your account settings and look for the subscription, membership or Super section. Duolingo's terms state that you need to log in to your Duolingo account and follow the instructions there to terminate or change your subscription.
- Follow the cancellation prompts through to a confirmation rather than closing the page partway.
- Check the same page afterwards to confirm no further renewal is scheduled, and keep any confirmation email.
- If you cannot find the option there, check both app store subscription lists, since a subscription bought in the app will not appear in Duolingo's own settings.
Duolingo's terms state that this needs doing even if you have deleted your account, so account deletion is not a substitute for cancelling. Duolingo does not publish fixed menu labels for this screen, so follow the subscription or membership section rather than looking for a specific button name.
What happens next?
- Duolingo's terms state that if you cancel your periodic subscription to a paid Duolingo service, you will continue to have access to the service through the end of your current billing period.
- The app keeps working. Duolingo is free to use without Super, so cancelling returns you to the free version rather than ending your ability to learn. Your account, your courses and your learning history stay with the account.
- Duolingo's terms state that all payments are nonrefundable and there are no refunds or credits for partially used membership periods, unless otherwise required by the law in your jurisdiction, so cancelling early in a period returns nothing.
- On a Family Plan, the subscription covers up to six Super accounts, so ending it removes Super from everyone it covered when the paid period finishes.
- Deleting the account does not settle the billing. Duolingo's terms state the subscription still needs terminating through your account even if you have deleted it.

How do I cancel an App Store free trial before I’m charged?
For a trial billed by Apple, open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Select the trial, choose the cancellation option and confirm. Apple advises cancelling at least 24 hours before the trial ends to prevent renewal. Check the confirmation for your access end date. If you track it in Subex, enter the date the trial converts as the renewal date and set a reminder 1 or 3 days before.

I deleted my Duolingo account and I am still being charged
Duolingo anticipates this in its terms, which state that if you want to change or terminate your subscription you need to log in to your Duolingo account and follow the instructions to do so, even if you have deleted your account. Deleting removes your learning data without touching the payment. If the subscription was bought in the App Store or Google Play, it is worse: Duolingo's terms state those payments are handled by Apple or Google, so the cancellation has to happen in that store regardless of what you do to the Duolingo account.
I cannot find the subscription in my Duolingo settings
That usually means a store is billing it. Duolingo's terms state that purchases made through the Apple or Google app stores have their payments and refunds handled by Apple or Google, and a store subscription does not appear as a cancellable item inside Duolingo's own account settings. Check both store subscription lists using the Apple ID and Google Account you would have used. A second cause is a second Duolingo account, since the subscription follows the account that bought it rather than your email address in general.
Duolingo refused to refund me
That matches its published terms, which state that all payments are nonrefundable and there are no refunds or credits for Virtual Items or partially used membership periods, unless otherwise required by the law in your jurisdiction. If the purchase was made through Apple or Google, Duolingo states it cannot issue refunds for them at all and the request belongs to that store, each of which runs its own policy and window. The local law exception is the one route worth raising if you are in a market with statutory withdrawal rights.
I was charged when my free trial ended
A trial converts automatically unless you stop it first. Duolingo's Super trial timeline describes a one-week trial in which the account is charged on day seven, and says to cancel at least 24 hours before then. Duolingo's terms describe the same mechanism for extended free trials obtained with a promotion code, stating that unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the extended free trial ends you automatically become a recurring subscriber. Apple and Google apply the same 24-hour rule to trials bought through their stores.
I am on somebody else's Family Plan and want out
There is nothing for you to cancel, because you are not the one paying. Duolingo's Family Plan covers up to six Super accounts under one subscription held by whoever set it up, and the invitation flow is managed by that person. If you want Super to stop, ask the plan owner, who holds the billing. If you are separately being charged as well, that is your own subscription and it is cancelled through whichever channel sold it, which may be Apple, Google or Duolingo directly.
