In this guide
Before you start.
- Check you have the right role. Figma states that team admins or owners downgrade or cancel a Professional plan, and that an Organization plan is cancelled by organization admins. To move off Organization or Enterprise, Figma states you must contact its support team.
- Leaving the team does not stop the bill. Figma states that on the Professional plan, if the team is paid for using your credit card or billing details, Figma will not remove your billing details when you leave.
- Count your files before you downgrade. Figma states the free Starter plan allows three Figma Design and Figma Sites files in a folder, three FigJam files and three Figma Slides files, and that if you go over the file limit Figma will prevent you from being able to edit your files. Going over one folder locks the team.
- Figma states that payments for Figma subscriptions are non-refundable. Cancelling stops the renewal rather than recovering what you already paid.
- You pay for empty seats too. Figma states you are billed for all seats on your plan, whether they are available and unassigned or assigned to a user, so removing people without removing seats changes nothing.
- Check your seat approval setting before you invite anyone else. Figma documents three options, and under "Auto-approve seats" it states that all seat upgrade requests are automatically granted and that if there are no seats available a new seat will be purchased.
- Download your invoices first. Figma users report losing access to invoices after moving to the free plan, so save the PDFs you need for accounting while the paid plan is still active.
- On an annual Organization or Enterprise plan, watch the renewal window. Figma states these are annual subscriptions with quarterly invoices sent every three months, and it shows admins a banner 30 days before an annual renewal to adjust seat counts, or 60 days for order-form customers.
FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE
Cancel Figma, step by step.
Cancel a Professional plan and drop to Starter
On Figma, cancelling and downgrading are the same control. This ends the paid plan and moves the team to the free Starter tier.
- Move or delete files so the team is within the Starter limits before the downgrade takes effect: three Design and Sites files, three FigJam files and three Slides files, in a single folder.
- Download the invoices you need from the billing area while you still have access.
- Open your file browser and click Admin.
- Open the Settings tab.
- Find the Plan section and click Cancel plan.
- Select a cancellation reason, then click Cancel plan to confirm.
- Check the plan shows as ending and note the date your billing period runs to.
Figma states that at the end of your billing period it will downgrade your team to a free Starter team, that any seats you add before the downgrade are prorated and reflected on your last invoice, and that you have access to all Professional plan features until the end of the current billing period.
Cut the seat count instead of cancelling
Worth doing when the plan is worth keeping but the invoice is not. Figma bills per seat including unassigned ones, so this is where most overspend sits.
- Open Admin, then the Settings tab, and look at the seats on the plan.
- Move people you do not need editing for to a free View seat.
- Remove the empty seats as well: Figma states you are billed for all seats whether they are assigned or available.
- Change the seat approval setting away from Auto-approve, which Figma states automatically grants all seat upgrade requests and purchases a new seat if none is available.
- Set the default seat type to viewer-restricted so new joiners do not consume a paid seat.
- On an annual plan, make the reduction before the renewal: Figma shows admins a banner 30 days beforehand, or 60 days for order-form customers.
Figma states it will not issue a prorated refund when you move a user to a free View seat, and that someone else at your company can use the paid seat for the remainder of the billing period. The saving arrives at renewal, not now.
Delete the team after cancelling
Only for when you want the team gone rather than free. Figma requires the cancellation first.
- Move any files you want to keep into another team or into your drafts.
- Cancel the Professional plan first: Figma states that to delete your team you need to cancel your Professional plan subscription first.
- Once the plan has ended, delete the team from the team settings.
- Note that Figma states downgrading or cancelling your subscription does not automatically delete your account, so the account itself remains.
If you are the last member of a team, leaving it deletes the team, and Figma gives the owner or admin a 28 day window to restore it.
What happens next?
- You keep the paid features until the period ends. Figma states you have access to all Professional plan features until the end of the current billing period, and the downgrade happens then.
- Files are not deleted, but editing can be. Figma states that if you are over the file limit it will prevent you from being able to edit your files, and that if you are over one folder it will lock your team and prevent you from editing your files. Moving files elsewhere is the fix.
- Version history shortens to 30 days on Starter, and Dev Mode and team libraries are not available.
- Published Figma Sites come down. Figma states they will automatically get unpublished, and that Figma Make apps stay up but any connected custom domain will be removed.
- Sharing narrows: on Starter, drafts can be invited at can view only.
- Figma states that payments for Figma subscriptions are non-refundable. A final invoice covering seats added before the downgrade is expected rather than an error.
- Save invoices before the downgrade completes. Figma users report that invoices become hard to reach once the team is on the free plan.
WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK
If you get stuck.
I cannot edit my files after downgrading
You are over a Starter limit. Figma states the free plan allows three Figma Design and Figma Sites files in a folder, three FigJam files and three Slides files, that going over the file limit prevents you from being able to edit your files, and that going over one folder locks the team. Move the extra files to another team, into drafts, or delete them, and editing returns.
Updating my card turned viewers into paid seats
This is the seat approval setting rather than the card. Figma documents an "Auto-approve seats" option under which all seat upgrade requests are automatically granted and a new seat is purchased if none is available. Figma users have reported guests and viewers converting to full seats in exactly this way. Change the approval setting to manual approval and set the default seat type to viewer-restricted.
I removed people and the bill did not go down
Two reasons, both documented. Figma states you are billed for all seats on your plan whether they are assigned or available, so the empty seats still cost money until you remove the seats themselves. And Figma states it will not issue a prorated refund when you move a user to a free View seat: the saving lands at the next renewal, and in the meantime someone else can use the paid seat.
There is no Cancel plan option in my settings
Either you are not an admin or you are on the wrong plan. Figma states that team admins or owners downgrade or cancel a Professional plan, so an ordinary editor will not see the control. And Figma states that to downgrade from the Organization or Enterprise plan you have to contact its support team, because there is no self-service cancellation on those tiers.
I cannot get to my invoices after downgrading
This is a known sequencing problem rather than a bug you can fix afterwards: once the team sits on the free plan, the billing area no longer serves the history the way it did. Download every invoice you need for accounting before you cancel. If you have already downgraded, Figma support is the route, and the receipts Figma emailed at the time are the other copy.
My files locked after a failed payment
Figma applies an escalating restriction rather than cancelling immediately: repeated failed charges lead to editing being locked on the team's files. Update the payment method on the billing page to restore access. If the whole organisation is locked out of the billing page itself, that needs a Figma support ticket, since there is no way in from the product.
Still not cancelled?Common reasons a subscription will not cancel
GOOD TO KNOW
Questions, answered.
How do I cancel my Figma Professional plan?
Open your file browser, click Admin, open the Settings tab, find the Plan section and click Cancel plan, then choose a reason and confirm. Figma downgrades the team to free Starter at the end of the billing period.
Does Figma refund an unused subscription?
Figma states that payments for Figma subscriptions are non-refundable, and that it will not issue a prorated refund when you downgrade a user to a free View seat. Cancelling stops the renewal rather than returning money already paid.
What happens to my Figma files on the free plan?
They stay, but editing can stop. Figma states the Starter plan allows three Design and Sites files in a folder, three FigJam files and three Slides files, and that over the file limit it prevents you from editing your files. Version history drops to 30 days and published Figma Sites are automatically unpublished.
Will leaving my Figma team stop me being charged?
No. Figma states that on the Professional plan, if the team is paid for using your credit card or billing details, it will not remove your billing details when you leave. Cancel the plan from Admin, Settings, Plan instead.
Can I cancel Figma through the App Store?
No. Figma's mobile app carries no in-app purchases, so Apple and Google Play do not bill the plan. Figma also states it only supports payment by credit card for new upgrades to the Professional plan.
