SOFTWARE & PRODUCTIVITYSubscription cancellation guide

How to cancel Todoist subscription.

If Todoist bills you directly, click your avatar, open Settings, then Subscription, and use the cancel option there. Todoist states the subscription remains active until the end of your current billing period. Inside the 30 day window on a yearly plan you get a choice Todoist spells out: cancel at the end of your billing period, or end the subscription immediately and receive a refund. If you subscribed in an app store, that store owns the renewal: Todoist sells Pro as an in-app purchase on both Apple and Google Play, and states that App Store subscriptions auto-renew by default so you need to cancel in your Apple Account settings. On the free Beginner plan, Todoist states active personal projects drop from 300 to 5 and that projects above the limit become view-only, oldest first, until you archive or delete some or upgrade again.

Before you start.

  • Check the receipt before hunting for a button. Todoist sells Pro through its own website, the Apple App Store, Google Play and the Microsoft Store, and each one cancels in a different place.
  • Todoist states that App Store subscriptions auto-renew by default so you need to cancel the subscription in your Apple Account settings, that Google Play subscriptions may or may not auto-renew depending on many factors, and that Todoist Pro payments made through the Microsoft Store will not auto-renew.
  • Note the refund windows. Todoist states that monthly payments for Pro and Business plans are not refundable, and that if you cancel your yearly Pro plan within 30 days of purchase or renewal you are eligible for a full refund, which is self-serve from subscription settings.
  • For yearly Business, Todoist states you cancel first and then contact support within 30 days. For an App Store purchase it states you must contact Apple directly because Apple does not allow developers to process refunds. For Microsoft Store purchases it states there are no refunds.
  • Count your projects before downgrading. Todoist states active personal projects go from 300 to 5 on the free Beginner plan, that projects above the limit become view-only oldest first, and that they show an exclamation mark icon in the sidebar until you archive or delete some or upgrade again.
  • Custom filters behave the same way. Todoist states filters drop from 150 to 3 and that extra filters are kept but you cannot open them until you upgrade again.
  • On a Business team, only an admin can end it. Todoist states that only admins can cancel a Business subscription, and that team billing is only available in the Todoist web and desktop apps, so the mobile app will not show it.
  • Guests cost nothing. Todoist states guests are free of charge and will not appear on the invoice, so converting collaborators to guests is a way to cut a Business bill.
  • Think twice before joining a Business team if you hold Pro. Todoist states the unused time on your individual Pro subscription is converted into account credit and the individual subscription ends, and that after you leave the team your account returns to the Beginner plan rather than your previous Pro plan.

FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE

Cancel Todoist, step by step.

Cancel Todoist Pro billed by Todoist

This is the route when you subscribed on the website or in the desktop app with a card. It is also where the self-serve yearly refund lives.

  1. Log in to Todoist on the web or in the desktop app.
  2. Click your avatar and open Settings.
  3. Open Subscription.
  4. On a monthly plan, or a yearly plan outside the 30 day window, select the cancel option: Todoist states the subscription remains active until the end of your current billing period.
  5. On a yearly plan inside 30 days of purchase or renewal, choose between cancelling at the end of your billing period and ending the subscription immediately with a refund.
  6. Check the Subscription page afterwards for the end date.

Todoist states that monthly payments for Pro and Business plans are not refundable, and that PayPal is no longer offered as a payment method.

Cancel a subscription bought on iPhone or iPad

Todoist sells Pro as an in-app purchase on iOS, so Apple takes the money and Apple controls the renewal.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your name at the top.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Tap Todoist, then tap Cancel Subscription.
  5. Confirm, and keep the Apple confirmation email.

Todoist states that App Store subscriptions auto-renew by default so you need to cancel in your Apple Account settings, and that for a refund you must contact Apple directly because Apple does not allow any developers to process refunds.

Cancel a subscription bought on Android

Google Play bills Android in-app purchases. Todoist notes the renewal behaviour here is less predictable than on Apple.

  1. Go to play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions, or open the Play Store app, tap your profile icon, then Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
  2. Select Todoist.
  3. Tap Cancel subscription and follow the instructions.
  4. For a refund, cancel first and then contact Todoist support.
  5. Check the entry shows as cancelled with an end date.

Todoist states that Google Play subscriptions may or may not auto-renew depending on many factors and advises checking your Google Play account.

Cancel a Todoist Business team subscription

Business is per member and only an admin can end it. Todoist routes the final step through a billing portal.

  1. Open Todoist on the web or in the desktop app: Todoist states team billing is only available there, not on mobile.
  2. Click the team in the sidebar.
  3. Open Subscription under the team name.
  4. Click Cancel plan, then Continue cancelling.
  5. Select a reason, then click Continue to billing portal.
  6. Click Cancel subscription, then Cancel subscription again to confirm.

Todoist states that only admins can cancel a Business subscription, and that on the free team plan everyone invited to the team is set as an admin by default. For a yearly Business refund it states you cancel first and then contact support within 30 days.

What happens next?

  • Paid features run to the end of the period. Todoist states the subscription remains active until the end of your current billing period, unless you take the immediate refund option on a yearly Pro plan inside 30 days.
  • Projects over the free limit lock rather than vanish. Todoist states active personal projects drop from 300 to 5, that projects above the limit become view-only oldest first, and that they carry an exclamation mark icon in the sidebar until you archive or delete some or upgrade again.
  • Filters behave the same way. Todoist states custom filters drop from 150 to 3 and that extra filters are kept but cannot be opened until you upgrade again.
  • Other free limits: Todoist states activity history shortens to 7 days, backups stop, uploads drop from 25 MB to 5 MB, and team projects drop from 500 to 5.
  • Features that stop include the calendar layout, durations, deadlines and custom reminders by time, location or recurrence, with Ramble limited to 10 sessions a month.
  • Caps that apply on every plan: Todoist states 300 active tasks per project and 500 projects in total.
  • Team credit is not cash. Todoist states that when a member is removed it converts the remaining time to an account balance for your Todoist team which covers the next invoice, and that this credit is not refundable and is not transferable to another team or plan.

WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK

If you get stuck.

There is no cancel option in my Todoist settings

Usually because a store bills you rather than Todoist. Todoist sells Pro as an in-app purchase on Apple and Google Play, and states an App Store subscription is cancelled in your Apple Account settings. The other cause is a Business team: Todoist states team billing is only available in the Todoist web and desktop apps, so it is invisible on mobile, and only admins can cancel it.

I cannot find the subscription that is charging me

Todoist's own first suggestion is to check whether you signed up with a different email address, which is the usual cause when the app shows a free account but a charge keeps arriving. If that does not find it, Todoist support can locate a subscription from the last four digits of the card and the card brand.

I joined a work team and lost the Pro plan I was paying for

That is the documented behaviour. Todoist states that the unused time on your individual Pro subscription is converted into account credit and your individual Pro subscription ends. The sting comes later: it states that after you leave the team your account returns to the Beginner plan instead of your previous Pro plan, and that the credit cannot be applied to App Store or Google Play purchases.

Some of my projects are greyed out and I cannot edit them

You are over the free project limit. Todoist states active personal projects drop to 5 on the Beginner plan, that projects above the limit become view-only oldest first, and that they show an exclamation mark icon in the sidebar. Archiving or deleting projects until you are under five restores editing on the rest.

The Business billing owner has left the company

This is harder than it should be because of how Todoist routes receipts. It states the first payment receipt is sent exclusively to the admin who upgraded the team, that it is not possible to add other email addresses as billing recipients, and that renewals are not emailed. If that person has gone, contact Todoist support and ask for a new admin to be assigned to the team.

A failed payment keeps retrying on my card

Todoist states that failed payments are automatically retried, and that if you would like to stop further payment attempts you should get in touch. So the retries are expected and support is the documented way to stop them, rather than waiting for the card to be declined enough times.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

How do I cancel my Todoist Pro subscription?

If Todoist billed you, click your avatar, open Settings, then Subscription, and cancel there. If you subscribed in the iOS or Android app, cancel in Apple subscriptions or Google Play instead, since those stores control the renewal.

Can I get a refund from Todoist?

Todoist states that monthly payments for Pro and Business are not refundable, and that cancelling a yearly Pro plan within 30 days of purchase or renewal makes you eligible for a full refund, available self-serve from subscription settings. Yearly Business requires cancelling and then contacting support within 30 days.

What happens to my tasks when Todoist Pro ends?

Nothing is deleted. Todoist states active personal projects drop to 5 and that projects above the limit become view-only oldest first until you archive or delete some or upgrade again. Custom filters drop to 3, with extra filters kept but not openable.

Does removing a Todoist Business member reduce the bill?

Yes, unusually. Todoist states it checks for remaining time on their subscription and converts the value to an account balance for your team, which is used to partially or completely cover your next invoice, and that a new invoice is generated for the proration when your team size changes.

Can I cancel a Todoist subscription bought in the Microsoft Store?

There is usually nothing to cancel. Todoist states that Todoist Pro payments made through the Microsoft Store will not auto-renew, so the plan expires on its own. It also states there are no refunds for Microsoft Store purchases.
