SOFTWARE & PRODUCTIVITYSubscription cancellation guide

How to cancel iCloud+ storage.

iCloud+ is managed inside your iCloud settings rather than in the app subscriptions list, and where it sits depends on your operating system version. On iOS 18.4 and later, open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, tap iCloud+, then Cancel Subscription. On iOS 18 through 18.3, open Settings, tap your name, tap iCloud, tap Manage Plan under iCloud+ Features, then Downgrade Options. On iOS 17 and earlier the path is Settings, your name, iCloud, Manage Account Storage, Downgrade Options. Apple states the change takes effect after your current subscription billing period ends. The part that costs people data: the free tier is 5 GB, and Apple's iCloud Terms of Service state that when you are over your storage limit Apple may, upon 30 days' notice, delete any stored data that exceeds it.

Before you start.

  • Check how much you are actually storing before you downgrade. The free tier is 5 GB. If your device backups, photos and iCloud Drive files add up to more than that, you will be over quota the moment the paid plan ends.
  • Apple states in its iCloud Terms of Service that when you are over your iCloud storage limit, Apple may, upon 30 days' notice, delete any stored data that exceeds your storage limit. This 30 day rule is in the terms rather than in the support articles, so nothing in the cancellation flow warns you about it.
  • Know what stops rather than what disappears. Apple states that iCloud will not sync or update your information and that iCloud backups will not complete while you are over the limit, and that syncing and backups resume when you increase storage or delete information to make space.
  • The quiet one: Apple states that exceeding your storage prevents you from receiving new email sent to your iCloud email address. Mail stops arriving without any obvious failure, so an @icloud.com address you still rely on is a reason to clear space before downgrading rather than after.
  • Check whether you also have Apple One. Apple states that if you already subscribe to a service included in Apple One, you will continue to be charged separately for it but you can cancel it. A standalone iCloud+ plan alongside Apple One means two charges, not one.
  • Back up what only exists in iCloud first. Photos, device backups and iCloud Drive files that were never copied to a computer are the ones at risk once the account is over quota.
  • Apple states that if you recently changed your iCloud+ plan you should contact Apple within 14 days for a refund, and that partial refunds are available where required by law.

FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE

Cancel iCloud+, step by step.

Downgrade or cancel on iPhone or iPad

This is the route most people need, and the menu path depends on your iOS version. Apple moved iCloud+ into the unified Subscriptions list at iOS 18.4, so an older device hides it somewhere else entirely.

  1. On iOS 18.4 and later: open Settings, tap your name at the top, tap Subscriptions, tap iCloud+, then tap Cancel Subscription or See All Plans.
  2. On iOS 18 through 18.3: open Settings, tap your name, tap iCloud, tap Manage Plan under iCloud+ Features, then tap Downgrade Options.
  3. On iOS 17 and earlier: open Settings, tap your name, tap iCloud, tap Manage Account Storage, then tap Downgrade Options.
  4. Enter your Apple Account password if you are asked for it.
  5. Choose the free 5 GB plan, or a smaller paid tier if you only want to reduce the cost, and confirm.
  6. Check Settings afterwards to confirm the plan shows as ending, and note the date your current billing period runs to.

Apple states that if you downgrade or cancel your iCloud+ plan, the change takes effect after your current subscription billing period ends. You keep the storage you paid for until then.

Downgrade or cancel on a Mac

The Mac path also changed by version, and the wording moved from Apple ID to Apple Account.

  1. On macOS Tahoe 26 and later: open System Settings, click Apple Account, click iCloud, then click Manage Plan under iCloud+ Features.
  2. On macOS Sonoma through Sequoia: open System Settings, click Apple Account, click iCloud, click Manage Plan, then click Downgrade Options.
  3. Sign in with your Apple Account password when prompted.
  4. Select the free 5 GB tier or the smaller plan you want and confirm the change.
  5. On Windows, open iCloud for Windows, click Manage, click Change Storage Plan, then click Downgrade Options.

The downgrade applies to the Apple Account, not to the device, so doing it once on any signed-in device is enough.

Cancel without an Apple device to hand

This is the awkward case. Apple's documented route for someone with no Apple device is the Report a Problem site, which is framed as a refund request rather than a plain cancellation.

  1. Sign in at reportaproblem.apple.com with the email address or phone number and password you use for your Apple Account.
  2. Tap or click "I'd like to", then choose "Request a refund".
  3. Choose a reason from the list.
  4. Choose the most recent charge for your iCloud+ subscription, or the iCloud subscription at the top, then choose Submit.
  5. If you can borrow any Apple device, sign in there instead and use the Settings route above, which cancels rather than asks.

Apple states that refund decisions can take 24 to 48 hours. Once iCloud+ appears as a subscription on your account you can also manage it at account.apple.com under the subscriptions section.

Cancel iCloud+ that came with Apple One

Apple One bundles iCloud+ storage with other services. Apple states the Individual tier includes 50 GB, Family includes 200 GB and Premier includes 2 TB. If you pay for both, you are paying twice.

  1. Check both places: look for an Apple One subscription and for a separate iCloud+ storage plan in your iCloud settings.
  2. If you want to keep Apple One, downgrade the standalone iCloud+ plan using the Settings route above so only the bundled storage remains.
  3. If you want to end Apple One instead, cancel it from your subscriptions list.
  4. Apple states that when you cancel Apple One you have the opportunity to select any individual subscriptions you would like to keep, and that you will be billed separately for them.
  5. Check your storage tier afterwards and clear space if the bundled allowance is smaller than what you were using.

Apple states that if you already subscribe to a service included in Apple One, you will continue to be charged separately but you can cancel it. Apple also notes that iCloud+ Family Sharing works a bit differently from the other subscriptions in the bundle.

What happens next?

  • The storage stays at the paid level until the end of the billing period you already paid for. Apple states the change takes effect after your current subscription billing period ends.
  • Once you drop to 5 GB and are over it, Apple states that iCloud will not sync or update your information and that iCloud backups will not complete. Apple also states that exceeding your storage can prevent you from receiving new email sent to your iCloud email address.
  • Nothing vanishes the moment the plan ends. The deletion rule is in the iCloud Terms of Service: Apple states it may, upon 30 days' notice, delete any stored data that exceeds your storage limit. Clearing space stops that clock.
  • Apple states that syncing and backups resume when you increase your storage capacity or delete information to make more space, so going back under 5 GB restores normal behaviour without buying a plan again.
  • Apple's iCloud+ features stop too, not just the storage: the extras bundled with a paid plan end with it.
  • Apple states that fees paid before termination are nonrefundable except as its agreement expressly permits, alongside the separate statement that you should contact Apple within 14 days of a recent plan change for a refund.

WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK

If you get stuck.

iCloud+ is not in my subscriptions list

That is expected on an older operating system rather than a sign that something is wrong. Apple only moved iCloud+ into the unified Subscriptions list at iOS 18.4. On iOS 18 through 18.3 it lives under Settings, your name, iCloud, Manage Plan, Downgrade Options, and on iOS 17 and earlier under Settings, your name, iCloud, Manage Account Storage, Downgrade Options. Most guides give only the Subscriptions path, which is why the option looks missing.

I am being charged by Apple twice for storage

Check for Apple One. Apple states that if you already subscribe to a service included in Apple One you will continue to be charged separately for it, and that you can cancel it. A standalone 2 TB plan is not absorbed when you buy Apple One Individual with its 50 GB, so both keep billing until you cancel the standalone plan yourself.

I cancelled and I was charged again anyway

Apple states the change takes effect after your current subscription billing period ends, so a cancellation made close to the renewal date can still let one more charge through. Check the renewal date shown in your settings against the date on the charge. If the charge falls after the period you cancelled in, take it to reportaproblem.apple.com, where Apple states refund decisions take 24 to 48 hours.

My iCloud email stopped arriving after I downgraded

This is the consequence people notice last. Apple states that exceeding your storage capacity may prevent you from receiving new email sent to your iCloud email address, and there is no loud failure when it happens. Delete files, old device backups or large photo libraries until you are under 5 GB and mail delivery resumes.

The downgrade option is greyed out or missing entirely

Plan management belongs to the Apple Account that bought the storage. If you are a family member using storage the organiser pays for, there is no downgrade control on your device because the plan is not yours: the organiser has to change it. Check which Apple Account is signed in under Settings before assuming the option is broken.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

How do I cancel my iCloud storage plan?

In Settings rather than in an app store list. On iOS 18.4 and later, open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, tap iCloud+, then Cancel Subscription. On older versions the control is under Settings, your name, iCloud, then Manage Plan or Manage Account Storage, then Downgrade Options.

What happens to my photos and backups if I cancel iCloud+?

They are not deleted straight away. Apple states that while you are over your storage limit iCloud will not sync or update your information and iCloud backups will not complete. Its iCloud Terms of Service state that Apple may, upon 30 days' notice, delete stored data that exceeds your storage limit, so clear space rather than leaving the account over quota.

How much free iCloud storage do I get after cancelling?

5 GB, which is the standard free allowance on an Apple Account. Anything above that has to come off the account or be paid for again, and device backups are usually the largest item.

Can I cancel iCloud+ if I do not have an iPhone or Mac?

Apple's documented route without a device is reportaproblem.apple.com, signed in with your Apple Account, using "I'd like to" and then "Request a refund" against the iCloud charge. It is framed as a refund request rather than a cancellation, so use a borrowed Apple device and the Settings route if you can.

Does cancelling iCloud+ delete my Apple Account?

No. The account, your purchases and your Apple services stay. Cancelling only returns the storage allowance to the free tier, and deleting the account is a separate action.
