SOFTWARE & PRODUCTIVITYSubscription cancellation guide

How to cancel Zoom subscription.

Sign in to the Zoom web portal, click your profile picture in the top right, click Plans and billing, locate the plan and click Cancel Plan, then confirm. Zoom states your paid services remain available until the end of your current plan term and that you will not be charged for the next renewal unless it is reactivated. Before you start, deal with your add-ons, because Zoom states that if your account includes active add-ons you must cancel the add-ons before you can cancel your base plan. Two deadlines decide the money. Zoom's terms state that all payments are non-cancelable for the initial subscription term or the then-current renewal term and are final and non-refundable, and that notice of termination is required at least thirty calendar days prior to the commencement of the next renewal term. And the data warning: Zoom states that when your paid subscription ends, cloud recordings remain available for 30 days, after which they are permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.

Before you start.

  • Download your cloud recordings first. Zoom states that when your paid subscription ends, cloud recordings remain available for 30 days, and that after 30 days they are permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.
  • Cancel your add-ons before the base plan. Zoom states that if your account includes active add-ons, you must cancel the add-ons before you can cancel your base plan, so the base-plan button will not work until they are gone.
  • Find your renewal date and count back 30 days. Zoom's terms state that each renewal term begins automatically unless either party provides written notice of termination or modification at least thirty calendar days prior to the commencement of the next renewal term.
  • Zoom states that all payments are non-cancelable for the initial subscription term or the then-current renewal term and are final and non-refundable, unless otherwise agreed to by Zoom, required by law, or set forth in your order form.
  • Check who took the payment. Zoom sells Zoom Workplace Pro as an in-app purchase on iOS, and states plainly that Zoom cannot cancel or manage subscriptions billed by Apple.
  • You need the right role. Zoom states the cancellation requires the account owner, an admin, or a user with a custom role that has billing privileges, and that the subscription must have been purchased directly from Zoom.
  • If the option is missing, that tells you something. Zoom states that if the Cancel Plan option is unavailable, self-service cancellation is not supported and you must contact support, which is the reseller and sales-contract case.
  • Seat reductions run on the renewal too. Zoom states that a reduction in licence quantities will take effect at the end of your current billing cycle, not immediately, and that licences must be unassigned from users first with no unpaid invoices outstanding.
  • Zoom's terms state that a modification is effective only upon the commencement of your next renewal term unless you request an increase, so upgrades apply at once while reductions wait.

FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE

Cancel Zoom, step by step.

Cancel a Zoom plan in the web portal

This is the route for a plan bought directly from Zoom. Note the add-on ordering rule, which is the usual reason the button appears not to work.

  1. Cancel every active add-on first: Zoom states you must cancel the add-ons before you can cancel your base plan.
  2. Sign in to the Zoom web portal.
  3. Click your profile picture or initials in the top right corner.
  4. Click Plans and billing.
  5. Locate the plan you want to end and click Cancel Plan.
  6. Confirm the cancellation, and do this at least thirty calendar days before the renewal date.
  7. Check the plan shows as ending and keep the confirmation.

Zoom states your paid services remain available until the end of your current plan term and that you will not be charged for the next renewal unless it is reactivated. If the Cancel Plan option is unavailable, Zoom states self-service cancellation is not supported and you must contact support.

Give notice by email to Zoom renewals

Use this when your account has no self-service cancellation in the billing portal, which is common on accounts sold under an order form.

  1. Check your renewal date and confirm you are inside the thirty calendar day notice window.
  2. Email renewals@zoom.us stating clearly that you are giving notice of termination for the services, naming the account and the plan.
  3. Include the account ID, the account owner's email address and the renewal date you are acting against.
  4. Ask for written confirmation of the termination and the effective date.
  5. Keep the sent email and the reply: the notice is what the contract turns on.

Zoom states that termination will be effective as to each service on the last day of the then-current term for each applicable service, provided you provide proper and timely notice.

Cancel a Zoom subscription bought on iPhone or iPad

Zoom sells Zoom Workplace Pro as an in-app purchase on iOS, which means Apple took the money and Apple controls the renewal.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your name at the top.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Tap Zoom, then tap Cancel Subscription.
  5. Confirm, and keep the Apple confirmation email.

An Apple-billed subscription cannot be cancelled in the Zoom web portal, and a refund request for it goes to Apple rather than to Zoom.

Reduce licences instead of cancelling

Worth doing when Zoom is still needed but for fewer people. The timing follows the same renewal logic as a full cancellation.

  1. Unassign the licences from users first, since Zoom requires this before a reduction.
  2. Clear any unpaid invoices on the account.
  3. Open Plans and Billing, then Plan Management, and click Manage.
  4. Click Edit Plan, then use the minus icon in the Licence section to reduce the count.
  5. Review the Updated Order Summary, click Place Order, then confirm with Yes.
  6. Expect the change at the cycle end: Zoom states a reduction in licence quantities takes effect at the end of your current billing cycle, not immediately.

Zoom states that accounts with custom pricing or contracts cannot self-reduce licences. Its terms state a modification is effective only upon the commencement of your next renewal term unless you request an increase.

What happens next?

  • Paid services run to the end of the term. Zoom states your paid services remain available until the end of your current plan term and that you will not be charged for the next renewal unless it is reactivated.
  • Cloud recordings are on a 30 day clock. Zoom states that when your paid subscription ends, cloud recordings remain available for 30 days, and that after 30 days they are permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.
  • Zoom states that all payments are non-cancelable for the initial subscription term or the then-current renewal term and are final and non-refundable, unless otherwise agreed by Zoom, required by law, or set forth in your order form.
  • The account drops to the free Basic tier rather than closing, which reinstates the 40 minute limit on group meetings.
  • Zoom states that once you downgrade you lose all associated plan features at the end of the current billing period.
  • Additional cloud recording storage is priced as its own add-on, from 1 GB at $10 a month up to 5 TB at $2,500 a month, so it is a separate line to stop.
  • Zoom states that if required by law it will send a reminder notice before the renewal term begins, reminding you of your right to terminate and how to do so.

WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK

If you get stuck.

Zoom will not let me cancel my plan

Check for active add-ons first. Zoom states that if your account includes active add-ons, you must cancel the add-ons before you can cancel your base plan, so the base-plan control stays blocked until Large Meeting, Audio Conferencing, Zoom Phone, Webinars, Zoom Rooms or extra cloud storage are cancelled. If the Cancel Plan option is missing entirely, Zoom states self-service cancellation is not supported for that account and you must contact support, which is the reseller and sales-contract case.

My cloud recordings vanished after the plan ended

This is the most expensive Zoom mistake and it is on a fixed clock. Zoom states that when your paid subscription ends, cloud recordings remain available for 30 days, and that after 30 days they are permanently deleted and cannot be recovered. Download everything before the plan lapses. If you are inside the 30 days, download now rather than raising a ticket first.

Zoom renewed my annual plan and will not refund it

Two stated rules produce this. Zoom's terms require written notice of termination at least thirty calendar days prior to the commencement of the next renewal term, and state that all payments are non-cancelable for the then-current renewal term and are final and non-refundable. Notice given inside the final thirty days stops the renewal after next, not this one.

I cancelled in the Zoom portal but Apple keeps charging me

Apple sold you that subscription. Zoom sells Zoom Workplace Pro through the App Store and states that Zoom cannot cancel or manage subscriptions billed by Apple. Cancel on iOS under Settings, your name, Subscriptions, Zoom, or on macOS in the App Store under your name, Account Settings, Manage, Edit, Cancel Subscription.

Zoom will not let me reduce my licence count

Zoom names the prerequisites. Licences must be unassigned from users first, there must be no unpaid invoices outstanding, and accounts with custom pricing or contracts cannot self-reduce at all. Even once it goes through, Zoom states the reduction takes effect at the end of your current billing cycle rather than immediately.

I cancelled and the charge still arrived

Zoom's Cancel Plan stops the next renewal rather than ending the current term: it states your paid services remain available until the end of your current plan term. If the charge is for the term you are still using, that is the term you already committed to, and Zoom's terms make it non-refundable. Check the date on the charge against your plan end date before disputing it.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

How do I cancel my Zoom subscription?

Sign in to the Zoom web portal, click your profile picture in the top right, click Plans and billing, locate the plan and click Cancel Plan, then confirm. Cancel any active add-ons first, because Zoom states they block the base-plan cancellation.

What happens to my Zoom cloud recordings after cancelling?

Zoom states that when your paid subscription ends, cloud recordings remain available for 30 days, and that after 30 days they are permanently deleted and cannot be recovered. Download them before the plan lapses.

Does Zoom refund an unused subscription?

Zoom's terms state that all payments are non-cancelable for the initial subscription term or the then-current renewal term and are final and non-refundable, unless otherwise agreed to by Zoom, required by law, or set forth in your order form.

Why did Zoom renew my plan automatically?

Zoom states each renewal term begins automatically unless either party gives written notice of termination or modification at least thirty calendar days before the next renewal term starts, and that automatic renewal is enabled on all plans purchased online.

Why can I not cancel my Zoom plan on the website?

Either active add-ons are blocking it, or Zoom did not sell you the plan directly. Zoom states add-ons must be cancelled first, that cancellation requires an owner, admin or billing-privileged role on a plan purchased directly from Zoom, and that an Apple-billed subscription cannot be cancelled or managed by Zoom at all.
