LEARNINGSubscription cancellation guide

How to cancel Babbel subscription.

Two questions decide this. First, do you actually have a renewing subscription? Babbel states that a Lifetime subscription provides ongoing access with a one-time payment and that there are no recurring payments on Lifetime or voucher access, so there is nothing to cancel and nothing to stop. Second, if you do have a renewing plan, who sold it? For a plan bought on babbel.com, the route is Account Information in your profile settings, where you use the Cancel auto-renewal button. For a plan bought in the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store, that store bills you and the cancellation happens there. Babbel states you can cancel at any time up to the day before the renewal date, and that you keep access to all of your courses until the subscription expires.

Before you start.

  • Check whether you are on Lifetime before anything else. Babbel states that a Lifetime subscription provides ongoing access with a one-time payment and that Lifetime and voucher access carry no recurring payments. If that is what you hold, there is no renewal to stop and no money to save by cancelling. Some learners hold a Lifetime unlock and a separate renewing plan at the same time, so look at the full list on your Account Information page rather than assuming one entry is everything.
  • Find out who bills you, because it decides the whole route. Babbel states that if you do not know where you bought your subscription, you can find this information on your Account Information page or on your original invoice. A plan bought on babbel.com is cancelled on babbel.com. A plan bought in an app is cancelled in that app's store, and Babbel cannot stop it.
  • Note the renewal date and the deadline attached to it. Babbel states you can cancel at any time up to the day before it renews, and that the Account Information page shows the date your subscription is due to renew or expire. Babbel also states that you pay upfront for the entire duration of your chosen subscription period, so a six-month plan takes six months of money in one charge rather than monthly instalments.
  • Download any course certificates you want to keep. Babbel states you can receive a certificate for every course you complete and download it from the completed course page, and that certificates can be downloaded only through the Babbel desktop version and are not available in the mobile app. Do this on a computer while the subscription is still active.
  • Deleting the app or the account does not stop the billing. Babbel states plainly that deleting the Babbel app from your device or cancelling your account does not cancel your subscription.
  • If you are the admin of a Group Plan, understand what your cancellation does to everybody else. Babbel states that one person purchases the subscription and can invite up to five others, that only the admin handles payment, and that if you cancel, everyone will keep access until the end of the current billing period. Babbel also states there can only be one admin per Group Plan and admin rights cannot be passed on.

FOLLOW THE RIGHT BILLING ROUTE

Cancel Babbel, step by step.

Cancel a Babbel subscription bought on babbel.com

This is the route for a subscription bought directly from Babbel on the website. Babbel names the Cancel auto-renewal button on the Account Information page as the way to do it.

  1. Go to babbel.com and log in to your account.
  2. Click the profile icon in the top right corner and choose Profile and settings.
  3. Open Account Information.
  4. Choose the subscription you want to stop and click the Cancel auto-renewal button.
  5. Check the expiration date shown in the subscription information, which is when access ends and the charges stop.

Babbel states that if you do not see the Cancel auto-renewal button, this means your subscription will not be renewed for the next period. In that case the work is already done, and the expiration date on the same page tells you when access ends. A Lifetime subscription shows no renewal to cancel because Babbel states it carries no recurring payments.

Cancel a Babbel subscription billed by Apple

If you subscribed inside the Babbel app on an iPhone or iPad, Apple bills you. Babbel directs these subscribers to the App Store and cannot stop the charge from its own side.

  1. Go to Settings on your iPhone or iPad and tap your name.
  2. Tap Subscriptions.
  3. Select Babbel and confirm the cancellation.

Babbel gives a specific warning for Apple purchases when changing plans: if your original subscription was bought via the Apple App Store, you always need to cancel it before changing your subscription to avoid any further charges. Buying a new plan on babbel.com does not cancel an Apple one.

Cancel a Babbel subscription billed by Google Play

A subscription started in the Babbel Android app is a Google Play purchase, and Babbel directs these subscribers to Google Play.

  1. Open the Google Play Store and tap the profile icon in the top right corner.
  2. Choose Payment and subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
  3. Select Babbel and click Cancel subscription.

Babbel states that invoices and payment information for app store purchases live in the Google Play Store rather than on your Babbel Account Information page, so that is also where to look for the receipt.

What happens next?

  • Babbel states that if you cancel your subscription you will still have access to all of your courses until your subscription expires, so you keep the time you paid for.
  • Learning progress is not deleted by cancelling. Babbel describes progress syncing across devices and states that a Group Plan member who is removed keeps their account and learning progress, so the account survives the end of paid access.
  • Certificates are downloaded, not streamed. Babbel states certificates can be downloaded only through the desktop version, so anything you have not saved before access ends is harder to retrieve afterwards.
  • A Lifetime subscription is unaffected by cancelling a separate renewing plan, because Babbel states Lifetime is a one-time payment with no recurring charges.
  • On a Group Plan, Babbel states that if you cancel, everyone keeps access until the end of the current billing period. Babbel also states that if the admin deletes their account while the plan is active, the whole group will lose access, which is a faster and more destructive outcome than cancelling.

Cancelling a Babbel free trial.

How do I cancel an App Store free trial before I’m charged?

For a trial billed by Apple, open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Select the trial, choose the cancellation option and confirm. Apple advises cancelling at least 24 hours before the trial ends to prevent renewal. Check the confirmation for your access end date. If you track it in Subex, enter the date the trial converts as the renewal date and set a reminder 1 or 3 days before.

WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK

If you get stuck.

There is no Cancel auto-renewal button on my account

Babbel states that if you do not see the Cancel auto-renewal button, your subscription will not be renewed for the next period, so nothing more is needed. Check the expiration date shown in the subscription information to confirm. The other explanation is that Babbel is not the biller: a subscription bought in the Apple App Store or Google Play is managed in that store, and Babbel's page will not offer to cancel it. Babbel states your Account Information page or your original invoice tells you where you bought it.

I cancelled but Babbel charged me again

Check which entity took the money. If the charge shows on an Apple or Google receipt rather than a Babbel invoice, cancelling on babbel.com never touched it, and Babbel states it must be cancelled in that store instead. If it is a Babbel charge, check the timing: Babbel states you can cancel at any time up to the day before the renewal date, so a cancellation made on the renewal day itself can arrive after the charge. A second cause is a second subscription, since one account can carry more than one plan.

I bought Lifetime but I am still being charged

A Lifetime purchase and a renewing plan are two separate things, and buying one does not always end the other. Babbel states that when you change to Babbel Lifetime, your current subscription is automatically cancelled unless it was purchased from Apple or Google Play. That exception is the trap: an Apple or Google subscription keeps renewing alongside your Lifetime access until you cancel it in that store. Babbel states you always need to cancel an Apple subscription yourself before changing plans.

I deleted the app and my account, so why is it still billing?

Babbel states directly that deleting the Babbel app from your device or cancelling your account does not cancel your subscription. The billing is held either by Babbel's own system, where Cancel auto-renewal ends it, or by Apple or Google, where only that store can end it. Deleting the account removes your access and your progress while leaving the payment running, which is the worst of both outcomes.

I am on a Group Plan and cannot find anything to cancel

Only the admin pays. Babbel states that one person, the admin, purchases the subscription and that members do not contribute anything, so a member has no billing to cancel. A member who wants out can leave the group instead, and Babbel states they lose access to the content straight away while their account and progress are kept safe. Babbel also states that a member with their own individual subscription keeps it running alongside the Group Plan, so check your own Account Information page for a separate plan that is still charging you.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

Do I need to cancel Babbel Lifetime?

No. Babbel states that a Lifetime subscription provides ongoing access with a one-time payment and that there are no recurring payments on Lifetime or voucher access. There is no renewal to stop. If money is still leaving your account, it belongs to a different subscription, so check your Account Information page for a second plan or an app store subscription.

When is the deadline to cancel Babbel?

Babbel states you can cancel your subscription at any time up to the day before it renews, and that the renewal date is shown on your Account Information page. A subscription billed by Apple or Google follows that store's timing instead, and both warn that a cancellation made less than 24 hours before renewal may not stop it.

Does cancelling Babbel delete my progress or certificates?

Cancelling ends paid access at the expiration date rather than deleting the account. Babbel states that a removed Group Plan member keeps their account and learning progress, and describes progress syncing across devices. Certificates are a separate matter: Babbel states they can be downloaded only through the Babbel desktop version, so download the ones you want from the completed course pages on a computer before access ends.

Can I get a refund on the part of the Babbel plan I did not use?

Babbel states that you pay upfront for the entire duration of your chosen subscription period and that access continues until the subscription expires. Its cancellation guidance describes stopping the next renewal rather than returning the current payment, so cancelling is a way to avoid the next charge. A subscription billed by Apple or Google is refunded, if at all, by that store under its own policy rather than by Babbel.
